Guide For CCleaner On Mepisguides.com

I hope I'm not breaking any of the forum rules by posting this... I created and write http://www.mepisguides.com One of the requested guides was on how resize an existing Windows installation in single disk systems to install Mepis Linux. However, Windows normally does need to be cleaned up before a partition can be resized. One of the support guides I created covers installing and using CCleaner:

That guide is located here : http://www.mepisguides.com/Windows/ccleaner/CCleaner.html

never mind... mis placed caps in the address... address fixed.

no its not. There is forum code in place to always caps lock the cc in CCleaner. the Address does not have the cc in caps. Great. I'm not sure there is anyway to get around that.

Page is linked through from the Mepisguides.com link... I'm not going to fight the forum coding to get the address right.

I just try to make an effort to contact program authors when their products are used in any of my guides, and it looked like making a forum posting was going to be easier than sending an email.

The url will not work because it's wants to capitalize CCleaner all the time. The first CCleaner is lower case, I will see if he can fix this.

I tried mepis not that long ago. :)

I really liked it (and kde) but I couldn't rely on it because the sound card on the laptop I put it on wasn't supported. :(

Going to try to not derail the thread, but when you do come across something like a non-working sound card, go ahead and file a post here : http://www.mepis.org/forum/8

There is a current known issue with sound cards not being detected correctly in the 6.04betas.

Andavari: Thanks, however it looks like somebody has bypassed the perma-caps for the address. (thank you to whoever did that)

TwistedMetal: all of the guides I write are under Creative Commons Share Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0. While I would love to put them in book format, I think that could only be done with either author approval, a royalty deal, or the like. For now, that makes attempting to sell the guides, in any form, probably not possible.

If someone is going to make the step of converting from Windows to Linux, then surely they are going to be fairly proficient in the use of computers already, so do they really need a guide on how to download and install CCleaner?

Sure, a guide to how to use it is cool, but the rest is for n00bs surely.

3 years ago, that would be true. However, a lot more people are getting more aggressive about promoting Linux as a desktop OS. Ubuntu is one of the stand outs in a distribution that has gone after the home user market as aggressively as Microsoft.

That particular line of thought there CaPMan also helps contribute to a myth, that users have to proficient in computer care and have to know about a computer to use Linux. That simply isn't true. I've spoken, personally, with several hundred people while working for Cox Communications who wanted to dump their Windows and move to Linux, but thought it was simply "too hard."

The point of MepisGuides is to completely remove any barriers to entry, and to remove the myth that the average user can't use Linux. So no. If someone is making the step of converting or adding Linux to their computer, I hope it is a new computer user who is not locked into Microsoft's bad habits. And, no, users who are installing Linux today are not fairly proficient in computer use. Many are self described as computer illiterate.

I hope it is a new computer user who is not locked into Microsoft's bad habits.

That makes a lot of sense.

Thinking back, I did recently have to help someone who has been using computers for a long time.

He had downloaded Activesync from MS, but lost the download file. However, he was not making it clear to me what stage he was at, he said he clicked it and the progress bar went up, then it disappeared.

So I had to figure out whether it was the download progress bar, or the installation progress bar.

Eventually I found out it was the download progress bar and that he had downloaded it to "My Documents".

If only people would look at where they are downloading stuff to, or even change the download location to the desktop, they would find that life is so much easier.

So I retract my other statement about the downloading and installing instructions, even long time computer users still need them obviously.

Btw, I hope your aim in converting people to Linux is successful.

Best of luck.
