ZZZzzzzzZZzz Folders Under C: Drive

Recommended Posts

Hey there,

I have a customer who's experiencing a number of folders under his C: drive labeled "ZzzzzzZZZZZzzzz" etc, that are created from CCleaner. I've read the previous posts on this that go back quite a ways, but I was hoping there's been an actual solution to this issue since then. I understand it's not malware or anything like that, but he's rather upset by this and I've explained it's due to the program. He uses CCleaner (Pro version) religiously and does not want to delete it. When I first addressed this I found that removing CCleaner the folders disappeared and did not return. But upon re-installing the software, within a half hour of running all the CCleaner utilities the folders returned to the C: Drive. Some of them you can delete, some requires admin privileges (which his account is admin) and then say they can't be deleted because they're in use. I'm assuming this is because CCleaner is running in the background.

I don't know what else to do for him because it's the program that's at fault, but he doesn't want to get rid of it. So here I am, lol. Hoping someone can share some insight here. Thank you.

I'd check if he is using Custom Clean and has 'Wipe free space' selected.

If so then untick it. Custom Clean will complete faster with it unticked as well.

Explain that wiping the free space is only needed if you are passing on the drive to someone else. It's used to prevent the new owner recovering your deleted files.

(TBH I suspect that he has it ticked and is closing CCleaner before it has finished because the WFS is taking time? And that would mean it hadn't had time to clean up the temporary zzzz files so they get left behind).

Worried about 'Tracking Files'? Worried about why some files come back after cleaning? See this link:

ZZzz files are usually caused by running secure delete. I assume that this applies to securely deleted folders as well. Wipe Free Space folders seem to have random names.
