mellistar Posted March 7, 2021 Share Posted March 7, 2021 i was wiping an external drive (WD 640GB)using w/ free space only x1 and out of no where error popped up in both program and windows stating there was a device not recognized. drive doesnt even show up in file manager now. any help would be appreciated. is this normal? i tried unpluggjng usb and reinserting because error message said something abouy usb aand device connected Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Guest Stephen CCleaner Posted May 4, 2021 Share Posted May 4, 2021 Hi all, I wanted to confirm back that we took this report very seriously and disabled the feature in v5.78 while we completed a thorough investigation of the Wipe Free Space feature. We thoroughly retested the functionality across various stress conditions, and did not find anything that could cause the error described. Wipe Free Space uses only standard file manipulating operations for creating and writing files, not direct disk access (which could introduce risk for file system integrity), so we feel confident that this is most likely down to hardware failure or some other rogue element that is beyond our control.
