Alright, i used crap cleaner on my account (admin) and i see registry issues in ccleaner that keep reappearing even after delete. Then i saw that people said use Dial-A-Fix for repairing the permissions, so i did that and now i have a huge scary issue. It repaired the problem but it removed 3 limited accounts (2 family and Guest) from the welcome screen and shared documents in My Computer. So i tried to create the accounts again and i can't the only 1 i can is the guest which i think it turned off in the process of repairing. What do i do now, if i system restore its gonna give me back the permissions i had, but then ill get the accounts back

Please help me, i dont know what the hell to do!

Update: i restored the guest account in control panel/user accounts and the folder in the shared documents reappeared and when i go in it, it has all the same folders that i left in it, does that mean the accounts are hidden or did they get removed?

what exactly did you use in dial-a-fix?

did you just delete the permissions?

what OS are you running?

if you had information on the other accounts, i suggest doing a system restore to get those files incase this cant be fixed and you did delete them.

if your running XP, the accounts might be at C:\documents and settings.

looks like it didnt remove the accounts after all.

they still exist, we just gotta get them to show on the welcome screen.

one thing we could try is this.

copy and paste this code into notepad.

regedit /e result.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList"notepad result.txtdel /q result.txt

then name it check.bat

run it and it will open up a new notepad with some information.

please post back that information.

after its installed, open it. (start>programs>powertoys for windows XP>tweak UI)

after its open, click logon.

under settings there are users.

click the users you want to show up on the welcome screen.

Possibly something that CCleaner's Issue scanner could have removed may have caused you the problem - if you have the undo.reg file it created you could post it as text in a quote or code so that we could see it. Other than that I have no ideal what happened and since I've never actually used DAP I won't make any assumptions that it was at fault.

There is a "fix" to hide and unhide user profiles on the Welcome Screen at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, scroll down to # 22 (on the left) and download the Unhide file just in case trying to remove those Issues causes the same thing. Just noticed # 45 (on the right), # 80 (on the right).

Alright i found a temp fix i tried and it seemed to work nicely. Instead of leaving the 2 limited accounts, i turned them into admin and then i repaired permissions with DAF and then i just turned guest back on and switched the 2 accounts back to limited and work fine

I got an answer on what happened and how to fix, if for some reason after running Dial-A-Fix, it messes it all the limited users and security setting. This is the exact email i received from DjLizard. This is his response to my email under it:

I've had this issue happen before on customer machines that I repair, but it's been quite rare. I've had it happen only about 2 times in the last 12 months. It seems that if the SAM or SECURITY hives are corrupted, using the Repair Permissions tool (which writes to over 2000 registry keys) causes the hive(s) (still not sure which one of the two) to become corrupted even further. The fix is pretty easy, actually.... once you cause the problem, simply boot into XP's Recovery Console and copy the SAM and SECURITY hive from a backup copy (found in the System Volume Information folder) over your current SAM and SECURITY. Make sure you copy both; they need to match. Here is my article about recovering specific registry hives without performing a full System Restore: http://wiki.DjLizard.net/SVI Using the information on that article, you will be able to fix the user accounts just by copying those two files from the backups in the SVI folder.

So basically, you already had a SECURITY hive issue (because CCleaner kept showing the same Issues) and you "repaired" it (which broke the corrupted hive further) by using Repair Permissions. Fortunately for me, it's not actually Dial-a-fix's fault; I got the method for repairing permissions directly from Microsoft. It is a Microsoft-sanctioned fix.

If you have any issues with the SVI article listed above, feel free to drop me a line (sorry if it takes a few days to reply to emails).

Cheers,

DjLizard

I used DAF to repair permissions so that CCleaner would remove entries that it kept reappearing even after i deleted them. After i repaired it removed 2 limited account (family members) and the Guest account from welcome screen and Files shared on computer in my computer. But if i try to create the accounts they exist. Someone suggested that i use TweakUI to look at logins to see if they were disabled, but they were not even listed. So i did a system restore to put back the folders and such and the then i guess it restored the permissions back to where CCleaner couldnt repair registry problems found again. Is there anything that you can suggest or tell me what happened? And is there a way to fix these permissions without losing the accounts again?
