FireFox new tab not showing customised URL

I've just jump from the FF 38 ESR stream to the 45 ESR one and have noticed that when I open a new tab, FF only shows its new tab screen, not my preset, custom URL.

I have the newtab field set in about:config but it ignores this settings now it seems.

I've read about the optional about:home and about:blank settings it can handle but about:home takes you to a different 'home' page than what the Home button does.

Just wondering if this is just me or some new undesirable effect FF now has.

It's somethng that changed a few versions back, can't remember which one, annoyed me as well.

Luckily there is an addon that gives your homepage whenever you open a new tab.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-homepage/?src=api

Works perfectly, install and forget, does exactly what it says on the tin,

thanks @nukecad, I was using another, similar, add-on yesterday when I first noticed this bug but have (for now) removed it and the like in the hope of finding a more in-built, do-as-the-browser-newtab-url-config-setting-bloody-says approach. :)

OK, seems I had some catching up on FF updates to do when I jumped from 38 to 45.

Version 41 is when FF decided, for security reasons apparently, to no longer adhere to the browser-newtab-url setting.

Looks like I'll be using that add-on after-all.  (bugger - and I just got my FF add-ons down to 1)

I agree, the less add-ons and plugins the less there is to potentially go wrong.

I only have 2 extensions and 3 plugins active.
