Lost pics on droid razr hd

Recommended Posts

I have your recovery program loaded on my PC. For some reason I can't download and open it on my Droid Razr HD so I am trying to recover some very important pics from my phone using my PC. The pics I need to recover are on my Droid Razr HD's internal drive (I know, Dummy me.). After connecting my phone to my PC with a USB connector I can't get your program to recognize it in the options to scan. Your scan system works excellent on my PC, I just hope there is a way to connect my phone to the same program. I am running Microsoft 7 or Google Chrome on my HP PC. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Joe

In order for recuva to recognize the device it needs to mount as a drive letter (example: f drive) and not a mtp (media player). Can you confirm that it is indeed a drive letter.

DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF.

Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark)

If you haven't done this already, there may be some useful info here ...

How to connect Android devices to PC with USB Mass Storage Mode:

For recovering deleted, lost or formatted files (photos, videos, music) from your Android devices with any Photo Recovery software, you must connect your devices with PC in USB mode. However, some Android users don’t know how to do this. Here are some tips to help you connect different version Android devices to PC with USB Mass Storage Mode.

For Android 2.1 to 2.3.7

For Android 4.0 to 4.1.2

For Android 4.2 or newer

The Droid Razr is listed in a couple of the different version number sections.

Hope that might help.

EDIT: Welcome to the forum by the way Joe

Nergal,

I plug my droid into a USB port. I can make the phone do it's normal functions interacting with my PC which means it is actually connected but when I use the Recuva program the same USB port is not recognized by the recovery program so I can't access my phone.

DennisD,

From what I understand, using the mass storage mode only allows me to access the external card but I may be wrong. My problem is that dummy me had my pics stored on the internal card. If I hadn't made that mistake I could have removed the external card and used a card reader to run the recovery program.

Thanks for the welcome.

Sadly, I'm expecting that to be the case Joe, but so many different models have different capabilities and even models by the same manufacturer can be different, so it's worth checking to see if it does make a difference or not.

Well the odyssey continues. I can't even find where to switch on the mass storage deal on my phone. Once I click on "more" I see nothing concerning mass storage. I wish I could just download the recuva program on my phone but when I do the phone will not open the program.

Could be it won't appear if you don't have an external card in Joe.

I can't find any way or any software (free) to recognize my phones built in memory or assign the phone a drive letter without a card in. That seems to be par for the course with the phones I've came across, which takes us back to Nergals information.

I've found software which claims to scan a phones internal memory, but on further reading, only if the computer assigns it a drive letter.

I do have an external card. That's why all this is so frustrating. Dummy me didn't have the camera set up to use the external card.

My Recuva program will recognize a usb thumb but it can't see my phone plugged into the same usb port.

I wonder if I could transfer the pic. file to my PC or even a thumb without losing the deleted pics in that file. I am tempted to try it but I better wait and make that my last option.

I know this might all seem kinda silly worrying about these pics but they are very important to me. I have thousands of pics documenting my life for the last 40 plus years. If I can't recover these there will be a 5 month gap in my picture taking life.

You didn't say what happened to your phone to cause you this problem Joe.

Is your phone still functioning at all, and if so can it access it's own internal memory? If recovery programs won't recognize the internal memory, I don't know what else will to copy anything to your computer.

This is beyond any experience I have with modern phone technology so I'm just plucking any idea out of the air here, but if your phone still works, can access it's memory for contacts etc, can you still transfer data from there to an inserted memory card. I'm guessing all modern phones can transfer contacts, images, music from the internal memory to an inserted card.

I'm thinking of the outside chance that you have a faulty file or files inside a folder which can still be copied.

And I fully appreciate the importance of your photographs, and if it comes to it would even suggest you look into the possibility of professional recovery. Could be costly, but it's all relative to the importance of your data.

Let us know the state of your phone and I'll keep looking around for a possible solution, and I'm sure the other guys on here will chip in if they have any ideas.

I screwed up Dennis. I was editing a few pics and deleting the old versions of the edited pic. I ended up deleting the whole file instead of just one pic. My fingers where going faster than my brain I guess.

Today I un-installed the whole Droid program from my PC and reloaded it again. As far as I know it is operating correctly.

I tried copying the DCIM file from my phone to my PC also but that didn't work either.

If I keep messing around stumbling in the dark I am afraid I might end up overwriting my pics.

I am thinking about trying to transfer all my files from the internal drive to the external card on my phone if that is possible. I then could pull the card and use my card reader on my PC. I could try transferring that info to a thumb also because I know the Recuva program will read a thumb on my PC.

I just don't know if deleted files will ride along on the transfer.

Thanks for the help so far. It is really appreciated. If I ever get it figured out I will let you know how it happened.

All internet phones can be writing temp files to the memory I believe, but as long as you don't take photos or videos you will lessen the chances of doing any overwriting.

.

I was hoping they may have just been faulty for some reason, but I doubt deleted files will transfer even if you can copy the entire DCIM folder across to the memory card. If it was me I would grasp any straw and give it a try.

Just came across this which explains why you couldn't find "mass storage" if your OS is Android 4 or later ...

Android 4.0 ice cream sandwich and later version like jelly bean has brought fundamental changes to the file system. The usb mass storage mode is removed ...

... it doesn't allow photo recovery software or any other desktop apps to interact with its storage ...

I've nothing else to suggest I'm afraid Joe except maybe have a look at this specialist forum, post a question with your problem and see if they can help. I'm guessing your phone is the "Motorola Droid RAZR HD"

http://forum.xda-developers.com/ (Main Site)

http://forum.xda-dev...play.php?f=1861 (Droid Razr Section)

They have a "Help And Troubleshooting" section.

At the very least, with your photographs being so important, they may be able to advise as to the possibility of pro recovery, possible sources for that, and whether the cost is worth the percentage risk of nothing coming of it.

Good luck.

Recuva will never support digital camera internal memory, or internal memory phone. This has always been the case, because the maunfactures require propetary drivers to access(as in the case of Kodak) This is why this feature will never be made.

Why give up at your first attempt.

If something went wrong with my Android Tablet I would NOT restrict myself to a Windows forum that is focussed upon a single data recovery tool.

I would start a topic in the Piriform Software or Hardware forum because I am already registered here and respect the wide range of expertise,

but also look for advice and support from Android forums and the Tablet manufacturer.

The storage used by the razr is more of a recovery friendly type than other mobile devices (iphone, for instance), once a delete command is sent, the raze locates the area on the memory where the deleted photos or videos has been stored on and marked it as a free space, sending the message that this area is available for newly captured photos, videos or audios to overwrite, if you haven’t used your phone intensively after the deletion, then the chance is good to fully recover deleted photos with capable deleted file recovery tool for Motorola droid razr.

Although I could be wrong, and that smidgeon of doubt stops me removing the above as a spam post, I seriously doubt that this program will work without a drive letter being present, which is the case with the internal memory of some modern phones.

The software guide itself seems to suggest that a drive letter is necessary ...

Your device will be detected by the program once successfully connected.

Select your Android, then click "Scan Now" to begin scanning.

Nothing shown there without a drive letter.

I would be happy to be proved wrong, but the unwary would be wise not to purchase this program without confirming that fact first with the developers.

I believe you are correct. I tried the free version to see if it would work but it did not.

I have not given up but I have taken a break from the frustration. :D

One solution could be using my Recuva program directly on my Droid phone but when I download the program to my phone it will not open.

The second possibility might be creating a disk image of my phone and transfer it to a thumb for my PC. Trying to do this could be way above my pay grade even if it is possible. Even then I don't know if my deleted pic files would transfer during this process.

Recuva is a PC program not an android app; it has no way of running on the phone, they are completely different types of computer. Akin to attempting to put monster truck tires on a child's tricycle.

You may also need follow the guide below.

If you really deleted them and do not have a backup, they are gone. There is an off-chance (very off) that if you put the SDcard into a PC you might be able to use a data retrieval program to get them back. But success at this point is very unlikely. When you use the phone you are overwriting old deleted data thereby making it irretrievable.

The thumbnail views you see are probably in the SDcard/DCIM/.thumbnails folder. In the DCIM folder is also the 100MEDIA directory. This is where your full camera images are stored. You might want to check there, manually.

Also, make sure you didn't just accidentally change the gallery settings and possibly didn't delete them at all (i.e. Gallery | Menu | Show/Hide Items.
