Really neat card trick based on mathematics

Here is a mathematical oddity, presented in the way of a really neat card trick. Use a normal 52-card deck. For the sake of this trick, Aces have a value of 1, Kings = 13, Queens = 12 and Jacks = 11.

 

- shuffle the deck.

 

- place the top card face up on the table and place more cards face up on top of that card until a count of 13 is reached. e.g. say the first card in the pile is a 3. You now place 10 more cards on that pile (secretly count to yourself as you place the cards - e.g. 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13).

 

- After your count of 13 is reached on the first pile, you start a new pile with the next card on top of the deck. You again count to 13, placing a card face up on that pile for every count. e.g. say the card is a 10, you then place 3 more cards face up on the pile.

 

- If the first card of a new pile is a Jack, then you need 2 more cards on the pile. A Queen needs one more card and a King does not get any more cards (i.e. remember, a King = 13). Since an Ace = 1, that pile would get 12 more cards.

 

- when you get near the bottom of the deck, do not start a pile that cannot be completed with the proper amount of cards (i.e. counting as explained above). In other words, all piles you have on the table have the proper amount of cards. You should not have any piles that have a short count in them.

 

- Now ask any member of your audience to turn over three piles. Any 3 piles. Make sure they pick up the entire pile while keeping it in the order it was and just turn it over and place the pile face down on the table.

 

- Now you pick up all remaining piles (i.e. all the face up piles) and place these cards with any cards that you still have left from your deck (naturally sometimes you will not have any cards left from the deck because it just happens to work out like that when setting up your piles).

 

- Now ask any member of your audience to point to two piles (i.e. 2 of the 3 piles now face down on the table).

 

- Turn over the top card from both piles and secretly add them together (remember Ace = 1, King = 13, Queen = 12 and Jack = 11, all other cards are at face value).

 

- Now add 10. Always add 10 (assuming its a 52 card deck).

 

- With the remaining cards, silently count the cards one at a time until you reach the total you came up with when adding the cards from the two piles together and adding 10.

 

- The number of cards you now have left is equal to the value of the top card of the remaining pile.

 

- You announce to your audience that the card on the remaining pile is a whatever, you turn over the top card of that pile and your audience will cheer. :)

 

* This trick works 100% of the time assuming you have 52 cards and assuming you counted correctly.

I've read that through carefully a couple of times, and if I can find that pack of cards I'll let you know when I've tried it razz.
