File Finder option to ignore file extensions

Recommended Posts

Scenario: If I have multiple audio or video files of the same thing, only differentiated by file format (e.g. Song01.mp3 , Song01.wav), I want to be able to find and delete one of them. The File Finder as it is now will not see these files as duplicates. That is why an option to ignore file extensions and just read the file name would be useful.

because they aren't duplicates, if ccleaner did as you suggest then many very different files which happen to have the same name would be caught as duplicates. This would cause unimaginable issues

ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION

DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF.

Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark)

ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.

OK they aren't duplicates. But even now if you search just by name, you can find many different files that it sees as duplicates. For example, a lot of games use a "config.dat" file, each game has their own unique file but File Finder will see them as duplicates. Another example, someone has a dual boot system with Windows 7 and Windows 8, a huge percentage of files will come up as duplicates. File Finder can already cause unimaginable issues if you have no idea what you're doing. I just want the option to be there, maybe it could be unchecked by default. Intended for specific folders, not whole drives.

I see absolutely zero merit in wasting a user's time by searching for and removing MP3 tunes that have been converted from MP4 videos - or vice versa.

You might want it but most people would not.

Your suggestion would damage the CCleaner.exe reputation as being one of the safest junk file removers.

I am in agreement with others who advocate the use of checksums to confirm that two files have identical contents.

I agree with your opinion that there is danger for the foolish who might think it safe to remove "duplicate" config.dat,

but despise your argument that this is justification for making CCleaner even more dangerous with an even wider catalogue of "equivalent duplicates".

Yes, too dangerous imho.

You might use a naming system that allows you to recognize which ones are "keepers".

Just a thought.

The CCleaner SLIM version is always released a bit after any new version; when it is it will be HERE :-)

Pssssst: ... It isn't really a cloud. Its a bunch of big, giant servers.
