HORROR story

Hello board. I've got a horrible story to tell. I used ccleaner a few times before, and always heard good things about it. This time my farther, who's not very good with computers, asked me to clean up his PC a little. So I installed ccleaner and used it.

Here's what I did - all checkmarks left where they were, removed all checkmarks for Firefox though, cause thats the browser that my father uses. So didnt want him to loose his cookies and whatnot. Also, cleaned registry and disabled lots of stuff in startup.

Now, here's what I have at the end. All files from his desktop are gone. He had A LOT, right on his desktop and in many folders. Files are all gone, folders are empty. Half oh his programs are gone as well. All Firefox settings are GONE. No bookmarks, no nothing. I mean I'm a pretty patient person but WTF!!??

Installed some data recovering tool that I've use before. Found thousands of files, but none of what I needed. Installed recuva just in case, which found nothing.

So now I'm in a very bad spot. I'm blaming myself of course, should've made a backup of all his files. But who new that ccleaner could be such a freaking beast!!

Really don't think that you guys can help me here.. If you got any ideas, that would be great. Otherwise consider it a rant.

Thanks.

I don't know what to tell you since CCleaner hasn't ever given me any personal issues. With that said there's been a few posts over the years where something has went wrong and people have ended up reinstalling Windows, etc., why I don't know and can't even offer a reason as to why it would happen.

I've moved your thread into the bug section of the forum, so perhaps the dev team will see it sooner.

"Cleaned registry and disabled lots of stuff in start up" is scary, especially the "lots of stuff". Could you have disabled something you need?

If it isn't broke, tweak it.

I didn't see your OS posted, but I'll take a stab at it.

It sounds like a user/login item, since the desktop and bookmarks were missing.

Could you be logged in (or not logged in) as the user you expect to be?

I'd go to control panel and check on user accounts (depending on OS), also go to System Properties (right click on "My Computer"... then to Advanced tab... User Profiles...). It will take a moment to gather the info. Do you see another user account?

If you know of one shortcut which was on the desktop before, search for all shortcuts and see if you can find where it is. The directory will give you a clue if it's in some user account's files.

Knowing the passwords for all user accounts, try to login to each account found. See if you can find that missing desk top.

Good Luck!

This happened to me too hun, unbeknowns to me I had downloaded a rogue reg cleaner that's using the same name and icon as ccleaner. I have since downloaded the correct ccleaner from the Hippo site and all is well. But you also have to be careful about the blocks being clicked and so on. But I think you got hold of the rogue like me - my computer nearly crashed. Did I make a fuss here on ccleaner, but all is well now that I have the correct cleaner.
