  1. It's pretty unlikely this would have happened without you noticing, much less without you making that choice. Have you done any repartitioning, or had cause to move the page file? What do you use the D drive for ... it can't all be page file surely (the Pagefile description in your screen shot seems a bit odd - or is that a Vista thing)?

The only thing out of the ordinary I've ever done is one time I restored the system with Paragon Backup using DVDs I'd made. Everything runs fine, I just find it kind of strange.

  2. The part about this that has me puzzled is how the heck did the D get ahead of the C? In searching this phenomena I've seen some screenshots of other Vista systems congigured this way. I have no idea if it has always been that way or not since I never payed attention before.

  3. So several years ago I upgraded my integrated graphics with a PCI (mother board does not accept PCIe) card on this XP Pent4 desktop. So I've upgraded from a 19" LCD to a 20" wide screen. The card I have now does not have a DVI port. I don't game but am wondering if I should still buy a PCI card with a DVI port or I won't notice that much difference from the VGA hookup I have now? One issue I do have is that I use the "whole" screen, e.g. my resolution is greater than the default 1600x900 and on some sites there is a scrolling lag. Could a DVI connection help with that? There are several in the $40 range. Thank You!

  4. Ever since XS.TO site changed its format (not sure when that was) when I attempt to upload an image I always get "Not a valid image file". This occurs with .bmp or .jpg with both XP and Vista. I just hosted the same image on ImageShack without a hitch. What gives?

  5. So this is no big deal, although it does annoy the heck out of me. By default, the icon is only supposed to appear if WD alerts. Despite Always Show enabled in Taskbar properties and and "Always" selected in WDs options, the icon does not load during startup on Vista laptop. Loads 100% of the time on XP system. I've searched all over the place for a resolution. I even found a reg hack in reply to my year old thread on The How-To Geek forum that didn't work. Any ideas? Thank You!

  6. Overkill, but I generally do it about every six months. I take the side off then lay the tower on my trucks tailgate with a towel under it. I have an air compressor in the garage and use the blow gun from a safe distance. Literally, I could probably rip the inside apart if I wasn't careful with all that air pressure!

  7. If this works slowday, hats off to you as I missed that in the settings. I'm not gonna reinstall to try it, but useful information.

It definitely works and IM and P2P shields were not present in services either (after days of booting too), however, having said that, since I obsess about things like this, I did the reinstall and now they are history for sure! You can still use the info for temporary shield disabling! lol

  8. I dont really understand.....get it why would ya want to do this.......what are you looking to gain.....I have all running & its taking much less comit charge/ memory usage than ver. 4.8.

In the monumental Avast thread in this section, several posters complained about the "!" after disabling shields, notably IM, P2P and Email, to the point, they were doing customized reinstalls of "5" to get rid of it. I'd mentioned in that thread that it was easy to remove the "!" but that I'd have to boot my laptop to recall how I did it. Why install "5" without IM or P2P shields or disable those shields if one never partakes in such use, I say why not?

  9. So Avast 5 hasn't missed a beat since the day it was released. I do have a question though. Unless my inference in this lengthy thread is incorrect, do disabled Shields re-enable themselves at boot, at least under "the hood"? Relative to that, there is a simple setting to disable the explanation point in the tray icon that was mentioned in this thread. Can't say how to do it at the moment since I'm not using the laptop with Avast.

  10. Thanks fireryone! "so they don't stretch out once maximized. Is that what you want to change?" Yes, I'd like them to render stretched. I've installed the Ff extension NoSquint which has helped. www.MSN is the worst one with its small fonts but I've improved that with Arial Black fonts. By enabling "Allow pages to choose their own colors..." they are still blue on that site but nice and bold and without having to set to large of a font size.

  11. So food, nice typo. But have you rebooted yet? Rebooting was the only indication I had that I couldn't use Avast 5 due to the blue stop screen of Windows auto-protecting the system.

Ah! Sorry about the "food". I actually shutdown last night because I wanted to see how long it would take to update today. Booted this morning and it updated immediately. Avira had been also since I went back to it a few weeks ago. The thing I like about this Avast compared to Avira, it has a web shield and email shield. The GUI is really slick and easy to understand. By all accounts, MSE has top notch protection but I do kind of like tweaking things and it was quite limited in that capacity.

  12. well yeah those microsoft products are turning like nero, leaving traces all over the system..too intrusive, god knows what else.

also don't forget regseeker.it can look for extra keys, etc programs don't uninstall.

i also read new avast is giving headaches to some sytems, bsod's,lags on some systems, reducing internet speeds...etc.

So far so food with Avast here on Vista laptop. Hope it stays that way!

  13. No because this install of XP Pro SP3 is fresh being only one week old as of today. I only had Avast 4.8 installed previously which was 100% removed as in every trace of it was gone as if it were never installed.

MSE does leave allot of stuff behind, hence the reason to track the installation. Use Revo to remove it, then use that tracked installation of either Total Uninstall or ZSoft Uninstaller to make sure all or most of the remnants are gone.

I use Revo often and yesterday used AppRemover (security software its specialty) to uninstall Avira. Had a problem with ZSoft a few weeks ago. It had analyzed the AyRcovery intsall on my XP desktop a year ago. I used it to uninstall AyR so I clould install Comodo Time Machine (same app really), however, it must have become corrupted or something because I ended up with the BSOD. Amazingly, even though I witnessed ZSoft removing many AyR files, out of desperation I forced a reboot and hit the Home key. AyR snapshots were there, selected one and everything was normal. Then I just used AyR's own uninstaller to remove it and now have CTM watching my back side!

  14. Good advice aqua, indeed making an image with Macrium Reflect (or whatever imaging program) if wanting the absolute minimum amount of hassle.

I went against my better judgment and installed Avast 5 a few hours ago. It sure does look nice and hardly uses any RAM whatsoever. But it doesn't ask for a reboot on XP, so I did that manually myself and was confronted with a blue stop screen which happened three times in a row. So in Safe Mode I removed Avast 5 to solve the issue, Total Uninstall'd the rest of it off, then used System Restore to make certain it was indeed dead and gone off my system.

I don't think I'll be trying Avast 5 again though, especially with the startup issue, and since I've installed Microsoft Security Essentials. I just wish Microsoft Security Essentials had a much smaller RAM/resource footprint, it's a complete pig in that regard.

    Adios Avast. :(

Did you ever have MSE installed prior to installing Avast 5? I've jumped around a lot with the free anti-viruses on a Vista laptop (I know you said XP). When Avira was having the update problems (seems to be fine now, as I used it lately) I went with Avast. Then there was all of this great PR about MSE and I used it. It had its update problems also so despite removing anything and everything MSE (Reg entries, files, appdata) I could never install Avast 4.8 or the beta 5, indeed similar symptoms as you encountered with every attempt. My free AvRecovery license expired and before I installed Comodo Time Machine I wanted to see if I could restore a Paragon image from summer. This image was before MSE was ever on this laptop. I updated all my software and just kept that image. Yesterday I installed Avast without a hitch, which makes me wonder if MSE leaves some remnants that even RegSeeker can't find.

  15. It won't let me format it any longer. On top of that as soon as I open anything in the context menu (from Explore to Properties) I get this message that windows Explorer must shut down. Is there any special way or software to force a format? I couldn't format my D partition on the Laptop either until I installed EASEUS Partition Master. Both PCs were using Paragon Backup. MMM! Thank You!

  16. did you mean Web Clip ?

if yes, go to Setting >Web Clip. It should be checked.

Not exactly! So say you receive an email from "Ace Tools.com" (fictitious by the way) and across the top of the page there are tabs for Mechanic Tools, Carpenter Tools, etc. For some vendors, not all or not all types of tabs (data) on the ad, if you left click the tab it opens in a completely blank page, however, not that this is a lot of work, if you right click it and select open in "New Window" it will open it correctly. I can't help but think there has to be a setting that is causing the pages to open blank.

  17. So tabs in any advertisements I receive just open blank pages with nothing but the url of the link at the bottom of the Firefox page. I've forwarded them to Yahoo or my pop3 Outlook Express account and they function normally so it's not any of my security, so it must be some gmail setting I need to change. Thank You!
