OS and version ?Windows xp media center edition

Browsers and ver.? Internet ex. 6 and firefox 2.0.0.13

Security software and ver? McAfee Serurity center

How about doing a system restore?, might not want to borther

I'm not up on the latest CCleaner bugs, but a system restore isn't a bad idea. Did you happen to install any new programs or change anything on your pc when the problem started? Is everything else on your pc running okay? Also, what version of java are you running?

Why are you running IE6, and not 7? It makes me wonder if you"re installing windows updates.

  2. Thanks Andavari. i tried all that (except for memtest86+) but it wont let me do anything anymore. I think maybe its just getting old and needs replacing. Ive had problems with it for a couple of years now, and have kind of been using bandaid solutions on and off, and am now thinking time to put it out to pasture. If i get another one, i can use this one to tinker with and such. The only thing im not too keen on is all the new computers that interested me all came with vista not xp.

Plus futureshop (where im looking at) has a no interest plan, equal payments for 24 months, so its not a huge hardship to get one, just means no motorcycle for me this year as i can only get my wife to let me get one toy at a time. :(

what do you think of that pc? anything its missing, or anything you would add to it? thanks!

btw a motorcycle would be a way cooler purchase since you have other computers? ;):P We got this last July, and I love it :Dhttp://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/yamaha_v_...verado_2007.php

  3. Ok, I think I finally fried my desktop. 6.5 years old, and i went downstairs and the darn thing wasnt working. I tried everything, and then even tried a full windows reinstall and it wont install. keeps getting hung, and wont work. something big going on, cause every other time i had to do a full reinstall it was (well a pain in the butt) no problem. so here is one i found, that im looking at. Any thoughts or suggestions?

What did you get for $2000 :o ? The link doesn't show it anymore. Unless it's an Alienware what could cost that much $????? Did they at least pay you for your broken computer as a trade-in?

  4. I just had an idea, but I'm not sure if it will work. Can I download the Kaspersky database and just copy the files into my antivirus database? I'm not sure if the antivirus software programs code their databases to only be read by their own software. Any thoughts? :)

  5. Okay, I have a stupid question about flashing a BIOS. The current revision is A05, and the latest BIOS update is A16. Do I have to apply all of the BIOS updates between A05 and A16 before using the A16 revision, or does it not matter? The readme.txt stated that it was a revision to A15 so it made me think that they all need to be applied in order. Does anyone know?

It's a Latitude D600 BIOS A05, and the Dell website keeps giving me the latest update of A16. I think it best to cover all of my bases before doing this because it's my first time doing it and all.

Maybe I need to hail Lokoike over here?

  6. Update: I downloaded and installed IE7, but still the exact same problem.

So! What I ended up doing was creating a new user account. Logged into the new user account I exported several keys, and saved them in a folder located on the C drive.

In the registry I navigated to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings\Zones

I exported every zone key (including the header zone key stated above), then think it was Zones 0-4.

Then I logged in as the main user, and imported every key.

Without even rebooting, it worked. :D How annoying though really.

  7. Don't know if it's needed anymore, but i have got 'DSOStop2' since i bought this current computer back in July 2004.

My 'DSOStop2' protection is still enabled, but i'm not sure if IE7 got that "Data Source Object" vulnerability...? Anyway, i use Opera as my default browser.

You can download DSOStop2 from here: http://www.scanwith.com/download/DSOstop.htm

Thanks. How do I find out if it's still needed though? I have had it installed for a few years myself. Just wondering if I should still be telling people to use it or not.

  8. Is DSOStop still needed for IE users, or has the issue been fixed in IE7, or awhile back in IE6 for that matter? ;) I'm not sure how to find out if it's still needed. I just trusted Andavari that it was needed way back when. :D Ahhhh, the good old days. :P

  9. Did you install any of the following:

    Host file

    IE Spyad

    Spyware Blaster

If so it could be one of those(I think IE spyad is the one that would cause that message. I've seen it block a few downloads on the computers I've put it on.)

Not yet. I keep getting the security alert when trying to download spywareblaster. Trying to fix one problem at a time. For now the PC is running AntiVir, spybot, and that's it. I'll get the rest on it soon. :)

  10. In Local Security Settings (Start, Run, secpol.msc) if a restriction was placed it can prevent an .exe file from loading. Although I have no idea and don't really know if it could block the downloading of files - that's more into the you'd better ask a malware removal expert area so you'll get proper information given.

Thanks Andavari. I did post a HJT log too. :)

  11. Depending upon what you're wanting to download there's Firefox Portable, unless of course you're trying to download from Microsoft/Windows Update or the Microsoft Download site that will be of no help.

FF is running fine on the PC, but like your said that doesn't solve update issues. And their is an exploit in the IE Tab extension for FF. Although I don't use IE there are times when it is necessary. Unfortunately.

Could a Group Policy be overriding the local settings maybe?

  12. I have lots of questions today. :P

How to turn off Verbose Logging.

I looked in the registry and HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\LogLevel is set for dword=0. Doesn't that mean that Verbose Logging should be Off? It is still on. Where else can it be turned off? XP SP2

  13. Well I tried that, and it didn't work. I set all the the internet, and intranet settings to Low. Enabled all downloading in Advanced, and then reinstalled IE. I think there are security settings outside of IE that are blocking maybe. The Security Logs in Event Viewer are loaded. Just not sure where to go.

  14. Does anyone know how to turn off this security alert? Anytime you try to download a file using IE this is the message.

    Security Alert

Your current settings do not allow this file to be downloaded.

I checked the firewall settings, and IE settings. There doesn't seem to be anything in either setting to inhibit downloads. What other settings could be blocking downloads? The last download I tried was Spywareblaster from Filehippo's website. Any ideas would be great. ;)

  15. It deleted the registry entries on file associations for MS Office. Now I need to guess if this file is an Excel file and this one is a Powerpoint file. I'd rather stick with CCleaner's registry cleaner

With RegSeeker it is extremely important that you go through the list and exclude what you want to keep. Andavari used to have a great exclude list for RegSeeker. Not sure if he still does.

EDIT: It's listed 4 posts below this one at the moment. LOL Looks like he posted it, thanks Andavari.
