  1. Nice... I do hate sometimes how electronic devices can be so finicky sometimes.

    AJ

Agreed! :) I think that I had a mild heart attack when my pc wouldn't turn on. :P

  2. Maybe unplug your PC from the wall outlet for a few minutes, then while it's still unplugged hold down the Power On button for about 10-20 seconds to dissipate any electricity

This did the trick! I held the power button for 30 seconds for extra luck. Now the PC is up and running great. :) Thanks again everyone.

  3. It sounds like you have 2 problems here.

    (1) Windows is not recognizing CD/DVD's in the drive, and

    (2) Administrator Permissions has been corrupted.

    (1) Do you have any yellow question marks in device manager? Have you uninstalled, and reinstalled your CD Drive in device manager (note: must reboot pc after uninstall).

    (2) To fix Admin Permissions, and policies...download and run DAF. For instructions on how to use DAF to repair your permissions please read here.

  4. There are jumpers on the motherboard that will allow you to reset the CMOS settings too. You might need the motherboard manual though to find out what position the jumper needs to be put in to allow the reset to take place.

I don't know how confident you feel doing that, however it might help....

I frequently reset CMOS settings to clear BIOS passwords ;), but the settings have nothing to do with this particular problem. Either the CMOS battery itself is dead & needs replacing, or the mobo died. Oh! And maybe a BIOS flash would help too.

I'm a worried that the mobo got fried because when I opened the case my wireless card looked like it had done a nose dive into it's slot, and it was difficult to remove. Not sure what happened there... :(

  5. If it is Windows Defrag that is telling you it is full and it can't defrag the disk, its because it needs 15% (I think) of free space on the drive to carry out the defrag.

As krit86lr said, the screenshot shows 1.79GB of free space left.

If you let us know what program you are trying to run, I'll see if I can provide anymore assistance.

That's correct, 15% of free space is needed to defrag a hard drive. But it seems that hotdoge3 is in need of a new, and larger hard drive more than a defrag. ;)

  6. Next I looked up the regseeker since I hadn't heard of it, that's not saying anything since there are so many programs out there, anyway, it had good reviews. I do think it's possible that there could be some issue using that if it's locking any files that CCleaner is trying to remove and causing some possible conflict. I doubt this but I don't know exactly what regseeker is keeping tabs on, or removing.

I'd just like to add a few things about regseeker. Regseeker is a good program, but is not good for novices for a few reasons. Regseeker is a vigorous cleaner, and if you let it clean everything that finds you will have trouble. The program has an exception section for users to manually input program information to ignore. There used to be a thread with Andavari's exclusion file to download...should still be around here somewhere. He's really the expert on this program. ;) Definitely not a safe program if you don't know to use it.

IMHO that was probably the culprit to the pc freezing. Too many missing registry files.

  7. Anyone know of a good pdf to MS Word document converter?

If you're looking for freeware you could try this.

"Easy PDF to Text Converter (http://www.pdf-to-html-word.com/pdf-to-text/) can export the text contents from a PDF document into a Text document. It is a standalone program and does not require Adobe Acrobat, or Acrobat Reader to be installed. And it can convert batches of PDF files to Text files with high speed and good quality."

Once it's a text document just press Ctrl+A to select the entire document, then copy/paste into word. If you want to pay some money just do a search on softpedia.com, and you'll get a lot of great options.

    Hope that helps. :)

  8. The boot disks shouldn't work if I can't get pass the BIOS. And the battery is the 2nd thing on my list of things to try. I am going to try powering it on without the battery and no drives hooked up, if Andavari's suggestion doesn't do the trick.

I'll let you all know how it goes tomorrow. Thanks again for all of your help. :)

    Have a Great Day!

  9. Hi,

I have acquired a Compaq Evo N400c subnote laptop which is running Windows XP Professional. As being a subnote laptop it does not have a CD-ROM or Floppy Disk drive. I want to install and run Windows 2000 Professional but with having no CD-ROM drive I can't just boot from the CD, format and install as usual. The only way I can install Windows 2000 is to copy the setup files off the CD and onto a USB Flash Drive and try and install from within Windows XP, but when I try and run the install I just get the message saying that the current installed version of Windows is newer than the one I'm trying to install and will not let me continue with the install.

Is there any way round this at all? I really want to get Windows 2000 running on this laptop.

I know there is a drive bay compartment available for the N400c that clips onto the bottom on the laptop to add CD-ROM functionality but I don't want to spend money on getting one of these as this will be the only time it would get used.

Also the N400c does not have the option of USB boot from within the BIOS so can't boot from a USB drive either.

I will appreciate any imput on this situation.

    Thanks :)

You could check this out. http://forums.ferra.ru/index.php?act=Attac...e=post&id=2

But in my opinion it would make more sense to spend the money to add CD-ROM functionality, you'll more than likely need it again. Or, you can use it once then sell it on ebay (or return it to store...shhhh...I didn't say that).

  10. Thanks, and that is a great idea. Do you know how I can get pass the bios into safe mode? When I power on the pc all that shows up is a screen that says "Intel Bios=F2". Yet when I press F2 nothing happens. So strange!

  11. Hey All,

The strangest thing happened to me today. I wanted to test an old Linksys external wireless adapter, and hooked it up to my pc. I installed the driver then when it connected to the network my pc froze...task manager wouldn't even pop up so I shut the pc down using the power button. I waiting 20 seconds and turned it back on, and the same thing happened so I shut it down again via the power button. Now it won't boot at all! It starts up, but I can't even get to the bios.

Any thoughts? Maybe flash the bios? So strange.

    Thanks,

    K

  12. Bonjour, et accueillir.

CCleaner d?sinstalle F-Secure?

  13. That's a really cool bike!

For some reason I'm fixated on old school classical styled motorcycles like this one, sure it has no real power but I just like it:

    http://www.bikez.com/bike/index.php?bike=25002

I've never seen anything like it. It's really neat! I wonder if it's comfy.... Definitely an original style.

I would love the new Harley Night Rider, but it's really pricey. http://www.mcnews.com.au/Wallpaper/HarleyD...rod_special.jpg But soooo Sexy! :D

  14. I actually had the same problem recently. I uninstalled it from Add/Remove Programs, but still couldn't install new version. I used CCleaner to show my program list, and it was showing in that list but not in Add/Remove Programs anymore so I uninstalled again using CCleaner. Then the new version installed perfect. I'm going to keep the troubleshooting link handy for any future problems just in case. ;)

  15. Hey krit. Thats an awesome bike you guys got. I would love one like that but it's not in the budget right now. And yeah it would have been way cooler, but im married with kids so being cool isnt a luxury anymore. :P I never see you on msn anymore. Hit me up sometime. :)

Ahhh...the family. ;) Hope all is good on the home front. We kind of lucked out because we couldn't afford a new bike at the time being a month after the wedding. But! Someone hit my husband on his old bike, and after insurance paid for repairs the bike shop let us trade it in for the full amount that he paid for it 2 years prior! Couldn't pass that up. LOL I was tired of being a passenger on a croch rocket. :P Now that I've contributed to taking this thread even further off topic I'll hit you up on IM.
