  1. OldDon - welcome to the forum :)

Login IDs/passwords, like to banking websites, are usually stored in cookies that are written to your hard drive. CCleaner will delete all cookies UNLESS you tell it not to - a whitelist, if you will.

Start CCleaner, go to Options-->Cookies. In the left pane all cookies found on your system will be listed. Click once to select the cookie you want to keep and then click on the right-pointing arrow button -> to move it to the right pane, "Cookies to Keep." You will have to do this for each website you log into.

  2. Hi,

I just wanted to say that I am extremely satisfied with piriform's CCleaner(which I've used for years), Defragger, Recuva and Speccy. Even though these are free (with a donation of cause) apps they rival almost every paid for app on the web. They are well thought out user friendly and do what they say. I work for an large ISP so in my day to day speak to a lot of IT managers and network mentainers. If anybody ever asks, I'll be sure to point them your way.

    Keep it up

    All the best

    Tim

It's refreshing to read a post in a support forum that actually praises the product. Rare. Thanks for taking the time to post!

Well deserved, I might add. Keep up the good work, Piriform.

  3. I have used the mvps HOSTS file for quite a while, so I decided to ask them about these cookies. Here is their reply:

"EverCookies" are a type of Cookie not an entry ... yes

the majority of 3rd party Cookies are blocked in the HOSTS

file ... however you still need to reset your Cookie settings.

You can address this problem by following these instructions:

Blocking Unwanted Cookies with Internet Explorer

Its interesting that his Blocking Unwanted Cookies link includes a plug for CCleaner. ;)

  4. System slowdowns are rarely caused by just one thing, like the registry, in my experience. That's why, after 6 years, I just scratch loaded an old laptop with WinXP. Boy, what a performance improvement! All the programs I had installed over the years had slowly drug it down to a crawl. The HDD was constantly being accessed.

    Not any more! :)

  5. When I clicked "Download" from the CCleaner home site, the next screen asked me to pay, but I did think it odd that it didn't mention an amount. So I clicked PayPal to see if that showed the price, and it did. When the PayPal site came up it said $20. I paid it. I have no problem contributing to these free things and I thank the owners for doing them. I do wish, though, that I'd read a bit more before I'd jumped. My fault, not theirs.

Sounds like you must mean this screen - it asks if you want to "donate" to "help support the software." That's not the same thing as "buy" the software.

  6. Also having this Freezing problem. About one minute into running ccleaner it freezes and locks-up my PC.

    Tried:

    1. reinstalling ccleaner

    2. reinstalling OS from original CD's

    3. run system checks for memory, harddrive, cpu

    Hardware:

Toshiba Laptop T3200, 3gb ram, 160 gb hd

    Software:

    Windows Vista fully patched

Possible culprit Kaspersky Internet Security suite 11.0.0.232(a)

I'm not sure if this is related to your problem or not, but I thought I would pass it along anyway. Your mentioning "Kaspersky" and "Toshiba laptop" made me remember something I had read a few months ago.

I use ZoneAlarm which uses the Kaspersky a/v-a/s engine. The ZA user forum addressed a problem with ZA on Toshiba laptops some time ago, running "Atheros Wi-Fi Protected Setup Library." You might want to see if it applies in your case.

  7. Considering the risk involved with any registry cleaner, I personally would never use something like a scheduled registry cleaner. I want to watch what is about to be cleaned and make individual decisions before clicking "Fix." Letting one run unattended is dangerous, IMO.

  8. Might you know why my version of CCleaner 2.32.1165, still shows some old applications present (ex. Office 2003, Foxit Reader...). As far as I can see these, are completely un-installed from my Windows XP laptop. Office 2007 in use, no Foxit files found...

I already tried a CCleaner un-install and re-install, even deleting the settings file, but same effect.

    Thanks very much,

    Downey

I had this problem a few months ago with MS Office 2003 which I had uninstalled months before, but CC was still detecting it. What I did was open the winapp.ini file in the CC program folder to see what Registry keys CC was looking for to determine if Office 2003 was installed.

I searched the Registry and sure enough, the keys were still there after the uninstall of Office 2003. I exported the keys first just in case it broke something and then deleted the keys. Rebooted the PC and started CC. CC no longer detected Office 2003. :)

  9. Ditto. When Eraser trashed my pc last year I switched to CC, and do my erasing with File Shredder.

I still have an older version - 5.86 which works fine on my WinXP PCs, but honestly, I rarely use it. I just have no need to wipe my HDD.

  10. It just cleans up log files, recent file lists etc. BUT, and this is unique only to Office, allowing CCleaner to clean Office will reset your settings to their defaults so if you don't want to lose your settings untick the office entries under CCleaners applications tab.

For more basic info on CCleaner take a look at the help files:

    http://docs.piriform.com/ccleaner

I also have Office 2007 installed and was wondering exactly what Office settings get reset by CC? In CC, I do have Office 2007 checked in the applications list and I have never noticed any of my customized settings get reset after running CC. So if some setting(s) is getting changed, I'd like to know what it is.

Inquiring minds want to know. ;)

    Thanks!

  11. After running CCleaner my Restore function has disappeared--there are no restore points any more.

Anyone have any idea how to get them back? They are an important safety function to me.

    Thanks!

    bert18

I have never had CC remove or delete any system restore points unless I specifically told it to do so by going to Tools-->System Restore. Are the restore points listed in CC under Tools-->System Restore?

The only time I had restore points deleted unintentionally, it was caused by a bug in my anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall program and was not related to CC.

  12. Thanks. Your reply reminded me that I did forget to include a couple of pieces of information in my original post.

Since Office 2007 is installed, CCleaner also correctly finds its registry entries:

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common

Also, I do have 2 Google related programs installed - Google Earth and Google Updater. From what I've read online, it appears that Google Earth uses Google Updater, so I don't think I can uninstall it.

I agree that I don't want to edit the registry and really mess something up. I would export the branch first in case the worst happened.

After some additional research and first backing up the registry entries. I was able to eliminate CC detecting these uninstalled programs by deleting the registry entries. There were no ill effects. :D Happy camper.

Without CC, I never would have known about the leftover remnants of these uninstalled programs.

BTW, Google Earth does NOT use or need Google Installer so I was able to uninstall it which eliminated an unnecessary process running in the background.
