  1. Yeah, supposedly Windows Vista is supposed to be more search-based than folder/directory-based, which I must admit, is a good update. I would imagine that would make the "gunk" less of an issue, since all of the files will be in a big soup anyway; they won't really have to be physically organized too much, since they will all have extensive tags that will describe them so they can be found via search. Therefore, fragmentation and such wouldn't really be a big deal. Plus, Vista is designed for hard drives that have NCQ, so even if the drives do get fragmented severly, you won't take a big hit in performance.

But also, supposedly the new Vista file system, WinFS, will become available for WinXP, so I would suggest not getting Vista for a long time (if ever). Just stick with XP; it doesn't hog resources (as much, anyway), and it isn't flooded with DRM crap. The only downside with XP is that it isn't as pretty. Big whoop.

  2. You could also format your hard drive and install MS-DOS. I bet Windows is eating up around 1.5 GBs! :D

Out of curiousity, why is 77% not enough?! I mean, once you're like me, and you have about 1.51 GBs left, that's when you need to start worrying!

  3. yeah i'd like to know the answer to that, my other comps have that problem, but I think the answer would be its just the harddrives as they get older they have more wear and it just naturally takes long to startup.

I don't think I'd blame the hard drives. I'd be willing to bet that if you did a clean install of Windows, it would be much faster.

You see, Windows is a degenerative OS; it is not a prefect or error-proof OS, like MS would like to think it is. Even if you maintain it well, clean your registry and startup processes, and remove unwanted files frequently, it will still eventually start to slow down. I had WinXP on my notebook for over a year, and cared for it meticulously, but after a while, it just started to slow down and not work the way it had when I had first installed it. Sure enough, after doing a clean reinstall, it is back up to speed.

It is possible that the hard drives have slowed down slightly since they were purchased, but if it is enough to make a serious difference, there is a good chance that something is wrong with them, so if you think that is the case, I would recommend backing up your files right away!

  4. Well, I exited out of FF, and found the box, but it was already checked. I tried unchecking it, applying the change, and then checking it and applying it again, but Englishmen's flag is still not waving. :(

Thanks for the suggestion though, I really thought that would work!

  5. Yes but that is a different so you cant really compare, the tv program is being sent to your home via satellite or cable so you have already paid for it. It does not mean you can distribute it but you can save it to view at a later date.

I guess this is one of those things I have a difficult time understanding. I could use tapes for example, since they can be easily configured to record dynamicly:

If I watch The Matrix on cable that I paid for, and I record it to a tape, that is my copy to keep. If I wanted to, I could make dozens of copies and distribute them, which would be illegal, but if I only make the one copy for myself, that is fine.

But yet, at the same time, if I rent a movie (and pay for it in the process), I can record that onto a tape in the same manner, and keep that tape for myself. However, that is illegal.

I realize we are talking about two different sources here, but yet the action taken is identical, and the members involved in making the video still receive payment. The creators of The Matrix receive money from the cable companies that air it, so when I pay for cable, The Matrix is getting money for it. Therefore it is okay if I make a copy of it.

But when I rent it, Blockbuster (or whoever I rent it from) has to pay for the movie, so part of the money I give to them goes to The Matrix as well. So either way, The Matrix is receiving money from me, and either way, I get a copy of the video for myself. Yet one method is considered illegal, while the other is not.

You mentioned that DVR lets you watch a show if you aren't there to see it when it airs. Well, what if I rent a movie, but in the 3 days I rented it for, I don't have any time available to view it, so I set up my tape recorder to record it, and the next week, after I have taken the movie back already, I finally get a chance to sit down and view it off of my tape. Why is this is illegal? If I was to record it onto my DVR, I would still have a copy of the same product, and I would still be making that copy for the same purpose.

I realize that lines have to be drawn somewhere to prevent chaos, but to me, some of this is pretty confusing!

  6. Ok, one more question, then I promise I'll stop. It is illegal in the USA to use DVD decrypting software (at least I believe it is); so, if I rented a movie, decrypted it, and burned it, that would be an illegal copy, correct? But then, if I see a program on TV, and record it to a DVD, that is fine.

Either way, I'm paying; if I rent it and burn it, I pay for the rented copy, and I pay for the disc I burn it to. If I record it off of cable, I pay for the cable, and for the disc I burn it to as well. One is illegal, the other is not. How does this all work out?

  7. I assume so if it is a site where users share there videos then yes its ok, if they are full length feature films they they are illegal.

Definitely not full feature films! Gmail has 10 MB attachment cap, so even if I wanted to, I wouldn't be able to. Although a friend did send me a clip from an episode of South Park; since that is a TV show, what is the legality of that? And what about taping television, for that matter? If you can DVR it, can you also legally make tapes of it, or DVDs of it, too?

Sorry I know these are way off topic, but I'm curious.

  8. Yes that is illegal, while she maybe only sharing them with you, you did not pay for them so it is illegal. I mean all illegal torrent users are doing is sharing the music and movies with single users the problem music and moves company's have is that there are millions of individuals doing it.

O well, the audio is nothing I can't live without. So then, video; what I've got is legal, right? Most of it was sent to me as attachments, but I know they got a lot of it from compfused.com, and some other sites like that. They look to me like mostly home-type videos and such. I'm assuming those are okay?

  9. By the way lokoike i hope the music your friends are sending you are not copyrighted because that would be illegal.

Well actually, the music is from my girlfriend and it is all CDs that she owns and ripped herself, so that isn't illegal, is it? She hasn't illegally downloaded any of it, so it is all paid for. I just assumed that was fine, since we aren't selling it or mass-distributing it.

  10. I can't compare it to KPDF since I've never used it, but I can say that I have no complaints major enough to give me a reason to switch to anything else. Foxit Reader is a huge improvement over Adobe Reader, so to be honest, I have no desire to test out anything else for now. Foxit meets all of my current PDF reading needs.

  11. @ Dheeraj

I stated before I may say this to you, here it is in beeping language.

Decipher this from the letter number in the alphabet:

    16 beeps, 9 beeps, 19 beeps, 19 beeps

    15 beeps, 15 beeps, 6 beeps

Piss oof? I think your RAM may not be seated properly; your beeping is off. :D j/k

I like the beep language. Very gracefully put.

But yeah, I looked at Dheeraj's user group, and it has "HACKING STUFF" listed on it, so it seems a bit awkward on a freeware/non-warez forum. O well, whatever floats his boat.

And another thing, aren't all mobos different when it comes to what the beeps mean? Did you (Dheeraj) just prop open your motherboard handbook and starting typing the Getting Started section?

  12. You can't delete posts. I was just curious why you were posting that particular link on several different threads.

I don't speak French, but I used Google Translate to make it English. It looked like it was just someone's description of CCleaner, so I was wondering what relevance it had to the topic.

  13. I've noticed for some time now that when I'm surfing the web, animated gifs that I view won't play. Both Firefox 1.5 and IE show only the first frame of any animated gif, so it looks just like a regular still picture.

At first I figured it was my firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro 6.1.737), so I shut it off and viewed some animated gifs, and they continued to not be animated; therefore, my firewall is most likely not at fault here. The Windows Security Center service is turned off, including Windows Firewall. I am using Windows XP Pro with SP2 and all current updates.

As far as cleaners and registry editors go, I currently only consistently use CCleaner, which obviously isn't the problem here. Otherwise, I really don't edit my registry much since I reinstalled Windows a few months ago, so I'm fairly certain it isn't a registry error that I have caused. Also something to note, animated gifs on my hard drive play just fine; it is only gifs on web pages that don't play through.

If anyone else has encountered this same problem, and knows how to correct it, please lend me some of your brilliance.

  14. Mike Rochip is correct. A blue file indicates that it is an NTFS file which is compressed or encrypted. You can turn the color off if you go into Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View > Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color .

As far as removing them goes, I believe every last one of them is simply a Windows Update Uninstaller. I would recommed putting them in your Recycling Bin for a couple weeks and see how Windows runs (I'm sure it will run just fine), and if you don't have any problems, get rid of them.

  15. The computer I built has a Radeon X850 Pro with 256 MB of GDDR3. It isn't my computer though; I built it for a friend.

My notebook which I bought two years ago is a flaming pile of crap. It has integrated video, so I set it to use 64 MB of my 512 MB of RAM. Pitiful. Top that off with an Athlon XP-M 2200+, and you have a paperweight with a 15" screen.

One day, when I am wealthy beyond all reason, I'll build myself a nice lil' rig. But until then... yeah, won't be versing you in CS Source any time soon.
