  1. Is there a echo in this forum?

    Yes.

    Yes.

No, sorry about that. I hit send, and it showed it loading, but the page went white and nothing happened, so I went back, reloaded the page, and sent it again. I didn't get the POSTDATA message, so I didn't figure it would repeat.

I guess it just goes to show that I like the beta twice as much! :D

  2. No, it actually erases the HotFix uninstaller, which takes up a huge amount of space by iteself. The HotFix is still there; CCleaner doesn't touch the actual updates. It just removes the means to uninstall them, because most people don't uninstall their HotFixes, as there is little reason to do so. HotFixes are corrections to errors in Windows, so why would you want to restore those errors?

  3. Well, as far as getting the pictures back (and abstaining from receiving the snotless slappings of your wife as well), I would recommend resorting to DOS for long enough to make a backup. Hopefully, your computer has a floppy drive. Assuming it does, I also hope that you have access to a Win98 or ME or XP startup floppy. If you don't, try to find someone who does.

You can put one of these in you computer and then turn it on; make sure that your computer is set to boot from the floppy first! After the floppy has loaded, you should be presented with a command prompt, which I assume you are somewhat familiar with.

You'll have to find the directory which contains your pictures, and copy them onto floppies, unless you have a second hard drive you can quick hook up and transfer stuff to. Quite a nuisance, but if you must format your primary hard disk, you don't have too many other options.

Assuming your pictures are located in My Pictures, you'll need to navigate to that by going under C:\ Documents and Settings\ Whatever your user name happens to be\ My Documents\ My Pictures . You must type "cd" (no quotes) followed by a space, and the name of the folder you are going into (cd stands for change directory). If you can't remember the names of the pictures you want to copy, you can display the names and some basic file information by going into the directory of your choice and typing "dir" (no quotes).

I doubt CCleaner did this; but it does sound like your Windows is toast. But please clarify something: did you make it to the login screen of Safe Mode? If you don't know how to go into Safe Mode, that is easy enough, and would make the file copying process much faster and easier. All you need to do is hit F8 over and over (hit it a couple times a second) as soon as the computer starts booting. This will give you a screen that lets you enter into Safe Mode, Command Prompt, Last Good Config, etc.

  4. Ooo. I like that one! If you did that, you could put it under Options, and make it its own category. So instead of being under Advanced, there could be a new category called... something (can't think of any good words right now to fit the group).

All of the checkboxes could be grouped by category, just like you said, and the default would be to wait 48 hours. That way, people who don't want to mess with it could just avoid the option tab altogether, and the people who want to adjust it would have the apps and temp folder neatly organized in one area. Good thinking!

  5. Well, you can always manually make shortcuts for the other accounts, but that is tedious. Maybe the installer could give you the option to pick if you want it for the current user or all users; that seems like it would be easy to implement.

Maybe MrG could even add it before he puts out CCleaner 1.27?

  6. If you said you have stopped it then im sure you have, but as you have previously said

which is more then likely true. The records of your illegal activity still remain, there for you should be very nervous the next you get a phone call or someone knocks on the door .(knock, knock  )

But that also means that if anyone sends a copywrited audio track to someone else, with or without that person's approval, the receiver becomes liable, even if they remove it the second it comes. So I doubt that I would be prosecuted for that. :)

Also, Google is known for doing everything in their power to not share their information with authorities; and when I say their information, I mean the information they have gathered from others, which would include Gmail accounts. In case you were curious, with all the audio removed, I'm still using 496 MB (18%) of my mailbox, so the audio portion was a (relatively) small part of the used storage.

  7. i agree it is really fast

And small; of course, Adobe seems to use a bulky style of programming. Any app made by them that I have ever seen has been huge and slow in loading. MS is the same way; alternatives to their apps usually offer identical features, but are smaller and faster. I love freeware/opensource, and I sure hope that DRM doesn't kill it off! Nothing like incompatibilities to turn a person off.

  8. A little off current topic, but I forgot to mention that I also like the music from the old Doom games (namely Ultimate Doom), even thought they were crappy-ass midis, and the music from Warcraft II. WCII was also a CD Extra, so I put it on a casette tape years ago and listened to it to put me to sleep. Good stuff.

Both games were good for their time, too.

  9. dude your hard drive is tiny.

Are you making fun of my notebook again?! I did recently buy a new 200 GB Maxtor internal (for $30; hell of a sale at Staples), and I'm gonna buy a case for it and make it an external.

And skip steak, he could take off his case panel, play some Half-Life 2, and heat the house. See, Intel is good for something; they help thwart USA's dependence on foreign oil!

  10. ...after removing the uninstallers, will the updates still appear in Add/Remove Programs? If not, how do people know what windows updates they have on their system?

After running the Issues scan and removing the keys related to the Hotfix Uninstallers, the Windows Updates are no longer listed in Add/Remove Programs. But that doesn't matter when it comes to getting updates; Windows Update will not prompt you to reinstall the updates you have already received. It will only offer you new updates, as if nothing has changed.

The only reason I can think of that a person would need to know which updates he has is if he has a pirated copy of Windows and needs to manually install updates. And even if that person does, if he accidently manually installs an update that he already has, it doesn't hurt anything; it just overwrites the previous update.

  11. 68 GHz? Sounds like a cooking-oil rig to me.

AMD Athlon XP-M 2200+ clocked at 1.78 GHz

    512 MB DDR @ 133 MHz

    30 GB HD @ 4200 RPM w/ 2 MB cache

    Integrated video/audio

    CD-RW/DVD combo drive (CD-R 24x)

  12. You should be worried as you use you Gmail account to transfer copyrighted music B)

For your information, I removed all of my copywrited audio as soon as you informed me of its lack of legality. Did you think I was lying when I said that it is nothing I can't live without?

Next time I want to hear those songs, I'll just have her come over to my place with her MP3 player, and we can listen to it that way. As far as I know, they haven't made that illegal yet. Although I'm sure it's only a matter of time...

  13. That sounds like a good idea for a feature, and I've never seen it mentioned before (of course I've only been on this forum since December).

The only question is, how would it be structured?

Would every single app have an on/off button for whether or not to wait 48 hours? That would give you more control, but would be a bit cumbersome and maybe get in the way.

Or, you could have one option to turn the 48 hours on for everything, including apps and Temp files. The only problem with this is, what if you want your logs deleted instantly, but want Temp files to stay for a while? Or visa versa? Or what if you only want to keep your ZA logs for 48 hours, and ditch all the other logs?

But I can definitely see potential in that suggestion. It would be nice to see it, or something like it, implemented.

  14. hmmmm... how would that work?

you think they do that with a lot of people?

If it is 30 days, they probably just de-Activate it. All Windows Update would have to do is edit the WPA.DBL file under C:\ Windows\ System32.
