  1. I remember hearing about VLC and Foobar by you guys on this forum before. I'll try both of those and see how it goes.

Off topic: for those of you with Windows 10 (like me) have you noticed a switch from being called File Explorer (that yellow folder that has Music, Documents, Videos, Pictures in it) is now being referred to as Quick Access, and that you can put anything in their using the Pin to Quick Access contextual menu? Lately I've found folders in there disappearing. Had to manually put them back in.

Corona here is another link to the use of "This PC" instead of Quick access; http://www.howtogeek.com/219936/how-to-disable-quick-access-in-file-explorer-on-windows-10/

  2. It's a friggin processor hog when running along-side other programs. It causes the fan to go into hyper overdrive. It's just Windows Media Player for crying out loud. What is this "I demand 10 to 15% of all available processor availability"? I'm talking 'music' here, not video. Also, the bass is pretty much mute. Treble and mid-range are at minimums. I'm not using the video enhancements or the WOW feature. Basically just the bare minimums. I've tried Media Player Classic which is excellent in processor speeds. But there's no way to put my hefty "play all' or "shuffle" commands in it. Windows 10 doesn't recognize Windows Media Player Classic as an app, or even a real app. (Yeah, I know. f***ing brilliant, right?) Any suggestions out there?

Interesting issue Corona you describe. I normally use VLC for both MP3 music and MP4 Music Video's and I'm not sure what CPU% is used however I just ran Windows Media player (32 bit) which I found on my 64 bit Win 10 and these are the results:

    MP3 music - Jessie Colter "I'm not Lisa" - 1.3% to 2.3% 4,298 KB

MP4 music Video - Andrea Bocelli "Love in Portifino" live recording 2013 - 2.2% to 5.3% 74,583 KB

When I upgraded my Win 8.8.1 to Win 10 it appears that the 32 bit WMP went with all the other 32 bit apps???

Lately due to the discovery of Kodi on my MXIII I have installed and been using Kodi for Windows on my Win 10 box as a Media player...........mainly because of the add-ons. Using how to use/configure Kodi on the PC is easier than learning on my MXIII & TV siting in my lounge chair. lol

  3. Well the time had to come when I needed to replace my WD HDTV Live network media player as it was approaching some 8 years of age. Whilst still working but for some reason it kept loosing it's IP address even when set to static, DHCP seemed to to work occaisionally and whilst I ended up with a time consuming "work-around" I thought Tas why not "shout one's self a belated Christmas present...............so I did. Here are some of the spec's of my replacement unit, the MXIII, for those interested in my purchase.

This unit ended up costing me costing me $84.53 Freight free at the time of ordering, some sort of special I suppose.(AUD) the advertised price in US dollars was S59.85 plus Frt.

Other than it works very well, easy to set up on my network, access my Movie, Music & image library on both Win 7 and Win 10 PC's, it interfaces well with the Samsung network TV and I love the XBMC - Kodi media player SW that ships with the unit. Handy for those like me that use Android smart phone and Android Tablet (Nexus 7). the MXII and my Moto 4G both use Android 5.1 where my Nexus 7 uses Android 6.0 - all very similar - so it was a very short learning curve.

If your into this type of media player, this "tiny" unit is worth a look. Here is the link to the supplier I used, hope this is OK. I've never used them before and all went well, only took 5 days shipped from China.

A couple of images attached also. Sould anyone require more detailed information I would be happy to oblige.

  4. It seems odd that they have waited until now to tell people Win 7 isn't safe

Methinks Microsoft are trying even harder to make people move to Win 10 by trying to frighten them.

Most operating systems are safe if they are set up correctly and secured with up to date tools.

I have a Win 7 and a Win 10 machine, and the Win 7 machine will be staying as it is. It's my machine..my rules.

My sentiments also hazelnut, I maintain it's a typical Microsoft structured "marketing ploy" to frighten the maddening crowd into "upgrading".  With layered security running and it's going to be 90% safe and I love your final words hazelnut "It's my machine..my rules" Beautifully said. These days in retirement I also only run 1 x Win 7 and 1 x Win 10..........I donated my XP unit to a worthy Uni student that could not yet afford a new PC.

  5. My experience some 9 years prior to my retirement was basically in a similar working environment as amcgall (I was a Branch Network Administrator / Client Network Consultant). We were only able to install software on our laptops, never able to install software on employee desktops or showroom PC. In Australia we were some 1,730 employees with many offices and a very large WAN.

However in the case of breaching any of the Companies written policies that we all signed and had our own copy, we would normally be given three written warning notices prior to dismissal, unless otherwise stated in the Company policy manual.

Whilst there is always two sides to every story I'm with you BrianH123 it all seems somewhat "heavy handed" from the details given so far.

My only wish is that "cool heads" will result in an amicable solution that see's your friend not lose his job especially being so close to Christmas time.

I wish you both "good luck"

  6. So Sorry Folks. :o

Hang on..................I'll have another white wine...............AH.................that's better, now let's try again.

Two "OPPS" in one day this will never do..................roll on 2016 gotta be better next year.

  7. Well folks as it's only 11 days to go till that "early morning" call from the "billy lids"............the kids................the children............."it's time to get up Mum/Dad etc."

So here we go..................my Christmas desktop.

    Where's your's folks?

  8. Well folks Christmas holiday time for some is just around the corner. However If you look very carefully where these two climbers are located one can only hope that they get to the top safely and back home by the 25th of December.

Whilst this image is certainly not of a Christmas theme I intend to post one just prior to Christmas day.

Let's Hope we get a better response this month than we did last month

  9. I for one also miss DennisD and his major input to the forum however I respect his privacy and personal space as well as his decision he appears to have made by his silence.

I to hope that all is well with DennisD and look forward to the day that he may decide to return to the Piriform Forum and those who enjoy his input.

  10. All of the above and much much more I never think about these days, all of which was known by yours truly as I spent many years in a previous life working for Canon Australia in a professional colour specialist role and have seen this technology used in identifying counterfeit culprits. This technology started back in the days of the first Colour photocopier manufacture by Canon and Xerox.

  11. Thanks to all who kindly offered their opinions which I have taken on-board.

Layered security is what I consider I have at present. Currently using Webroot SecureAnywhere (paid for), Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (free ver.) and SpywareBlaster (free ver.) Whilst I've usually had MS Defender running also Webroot disables Defender and also uses it's own firewall. Similar SW plus Spybot I currently use on the Win 7 box.

Your collective comments will see me spend more time considering/reading/researching prior to the expiry of my Webroot app and perhaps try layering some of the free SW first then perhaps giving Avast Premier a run.

Thanks once again to all, much appreciated

  12. Andavari I have completed an exhaustive search and the only thing I was able to find was reference to "Sentinel.v3.5Client.dll" which I'm told is part of Microsoft® .NET Framework and developed by Microsoft Corporation.

No mention of Aladdin/Sentinel HASP License Manager using either Win 10's uninstall app, CCleaner tools section and the latest version of Everything which is where I picked up reference to Sentinel.v3.5Client.dll

Other than that do you have any comment regarding the full paid version of Avast Premium? I've only ever used the free version on previous non mission critical PC's.

  13. login123..................lol, lol, lol............you missed your vocation, you should have been a comedian..........that was and still is a very funny line, and worth remembering (I only had 2 glasses)

Well back to webroot, my question to them was a simple one "can I delete the 36.9gig DB file?" after several e-mails following their data gathering from my PC by running an executable DB app, their only suggestion (not an answer to my question) was to uninstall and re install webroot app. following a set of instructions (7 steps) and report back if this does not fix the problem......Yeah right........

So I put my solution into play..........throw caution to the wind and delete the 36.9gig DB file. Now reboot the PC.

Job done, no problems or issues yet, and I've got my free space on my HDD back again. I also have my Macrium Reflect restore disc at the ready.

I will however be purchasing Avast Premium in 46 days time when my webroot secure anywhere runs out. There are to many users out there with the same re-occurring problem.

Is anyone of our forum members out there using Avast Premier? if so I would appreciate your thoughts please.

  14. Thanks hazelnut for the suggestion and I have read the post which I shall store in the "necktop" PC however I think I may have found the culprit..........

My security SW "webroot" which I have no complaints so far, (just waiting on them to reply with advice) because it appears their SW created a database file db18431.db in their WRData sub directory under C:\Program\Data whilst I was away shopping for food (including wine which I'm now drinking while I wait for Tech support).

This db file was............wait for it a MASSIVE 36,981,566kb......36.9gig.

No wonder I lost my free space. Thankfully as I backup drive C complete with Macrium Reflect every day at 11.00am I can restore to yesterday if my phone support is to long coming. I'm lucky that I have additional 6.0TB of hDD space available for these daily backup's. I usually keep just 20 of them then delete the last 10 every 10 days or so.

Normally these db files are only small, not sure just what happened this time time but only time will tell. I shall let you know the outcome (if any) other than a Reflect restore..........I Love Macrium.  :D

  15. Well folks I need some advice please.

I've just seen a warning sign from Win 10 stating that I'm running out of drive space on my System-Apps drive C. I'm running Win 10 - 64Bit upgrade from Win 8.1 with no issues at all. The 120GIG SSD partitions: System reserved: 350MB System & Apps: 111.01GIG Recovery Partition: 450MB

The drive is a Samsung 120GIG SSD and last night I know that of 111GIG main partition I had 30GIG free. I've painstakingly checked all my Directories/folders etc. including hidden & system folders and they add up to only approx. 84GIG - the details are

    Windows: 18.6GIG

    Public: 52.0MB

    Users: 7.8GIG

    Program Data: 42.8GIG

    Program Files (x86): 6.0GIG

    Program: 2.3GIG

    Boot: 280MB

    $Windows~WS: 5.8GIG

This totals just under 84GIG so I've lost some 27GIG

Does anyone have any Ideas? Because I'm not sure where to look next..............I know it'e probably a simple answer but I'll plead having a senior moment.
