  1. Hazelnut a good question to pose these days with all the weird things out there that can take a system down, apart from the user making a MAJOR mistake, as I did many years ago. So since then I have gone "overboard".

As previously stated I use "Allway Sync" to a 500gig USB HD for Data, I also use "Lacie Backup" for drive "C" (SW came free when I purchased an expensive Canon Laser printer / scanner / copier / fax machine. It also shipped with a Rebate for a SATA 500gig HD).

Now come the most important part, my PC is equipped with 11 bays, 5 for Hard drives + others, so I run 5 SATA HD's plus the USB 500gig HD, some 1.7TB of storage. So when I back up my System drive "C" with "Lacie" it backs up to a "separate" physical HD. For the last 6 years my standard build for me and my after hours clients always includes a min. of 2 physical HD's. If not, I do not build the box.

For my 5 PC's on my network I uses all Gigabyte motherboards as they all ship with (well the ones I purchased) "Xpress Recovery2" software which is a utility that allows you to quickly compress and backup you system data and perform restoration of it. Supports NTFS, FAT32 & FAT16 file systems, Xpress Recover2 can backup data on PATA and SATA hard drives and restore it.

Xpress Recovery2 can only backup and restore the first physical hard drive that has the operating system installed. You boot from the Gigabyte CD that comes with the MB to run the Xpress Recovery2 system to backup and restore. By the way it takes longer to backup than restore.

Not supported (no issue for me) OS requirements are Win XP SP1 or later, USB hard drives (can not store the backup image on them) Hard drives in RAID/AHCI mode.

I also like you create a new backup every month like clockwork only because I created a MAJOR mistake many years ago and the heartache and time it took to rebuild and restore my data from "hard copy" I do not wish to repeat the exercise.

I really need to get a life as I also use Ghost and create an backup image (every 6 months) which is stored on another HD, a different PC across my LAN. Data only backups are made weekly, data Allway Sync is performed every time I shut down, this is done automatically.

Sorry to be so long winded about the subject, BUT backups are so important, and if one does backup, one should do it regularly (at least monthly) as you suggest Hazelnut.

  2. A gadget with a CPU meter and RAM meter built in, as well as the usual speccy stuff, to make it more uniform and look better than 7's own CPU/RAM meter.

I am not sure if this will assist but I am using on my Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit the following SW which works well.

1/ All CPU Meter V 1.2 (shows core 1 and core 2 % and graph usage + RAM, used, free and total as % and graph)

2/ Wired network meter V 3.1 (shows internal & external IP's + amounts uploaded and downloaded % and numerical amount)

Both these "real time" SW gadgets are from "Addgadget.com" free of charge. Let us know if they also work on a 64bit OS.

  3. Sounds like someone I know, and I now have a new name for them. Cleverbot!

    :)

Well I had a look and wasted some time bouncing questions back and forth, and you are right, frightening to think just where we will be up to in the future.

We will most likely all have a "Hal" living with us and when we leave the house in the morning we will say something like:

"Hal, should I take my coat with me this morning?"....................

PS: go on folks, I dare you, go and have a talk to "CleverBot"

  4. David, I also highly recommend WinDirStat http://windirstat.info/ apart for all the previous benefits stated:

"It shows a graphical representation for every single file on the harddrive, making them as big as they are in comparison to another file. For instance, a 1Gb file would be a huge rectangle taking up most of the space, while a 2 KB log file will show up as a near minuscule block. And, you can click on each block to see what it correlates to."

You can also open / launch / view all files + run video / movie files, a great way to inspect / decide / discover "I did not know I had 3 copies of that file (or very large movie file) stored in that directory and that directory etc.

You can also run this app across a LAN, something I do regularly to keep a check on my Wife and Son's PC available storage space. When I see an issue looming I can even send them an e-mail from within WinDirStat to them which list / show the UNC path of the suspect duplicated files for deletion.

There are many other benefits to numerous to list here, do yourself a BIG favour, go and read up on WinDirStat. By the way there is (was) no cost for the SW. Donations are always welcome they tell me.

  5. Does anyone know why speccy only shows the cpu temp on duo's or quads ? i am running several others with a pent 4 and a pent D , both are hyper threaded so technically they are dual processors (the D has two cores the 4 does not ) and show up as so but not the core temp on either , all the other pc's with both intel and amd that are quads or duo's do show the core temp , is this a bios/cmos issue or is it the age of the two pc's mentioned ?

Wolfie, a very good question well asked.

I have only been using Speccy for several weeks, first on my test PC running Win 7, a P4 2.8Ghz Hyper threading, and now using on my main PC Intel core Duo E8200, Win XP with the same results as you.

No core temp on the Test PC, yet core 1 and core 2 temp on the Intel Duo.

A CPU usage widget on the Test PC shows both usage figures for core 1 and core 2 (hyper thread), so I like you was expecting core temp to be shown.

Perhaps this is because Speccy is still in Beta, is this so Piriform.

  6. Hi Folks

I have just had a thread in the hardware section as I have a new expansion external drive to play with !

    I have been recommended to..

take 500GB hard drive and partition it into 50/50 or 250GB/250GB or split into another ratio you see fit.

Next I would use backup software and make a clone copy of your Operating System and save this to the first partition of your external drive.

I have looked through the recommended software thread but not come across any software yet that could copy my system onto my new external drive as a backup--any one know or used one ??

oh and it must be idiot proof !!!!!!

    Appreciate any comments

    thankyou

As of about 5 weeks ago I started to test the following Soft Ware:

Allway Syncfile synchronization that worksversion 9.4.11

    Copyright ? 2004-2009

One synchronization software provides all these solutions

Sync data between your desktop PC and laptop (notebook).

Replicate and back-up data between your home and office computers.

    Synchronize more than two directories.

Update and back-up files over a local network or the Internet.

Synchronize removable devices (USB key, flash drive, CDRW) with a local drive. Get both the performance of local drives and the mobility of removable drives. USB key lost or damaged? Your local drive always has an up-to-date copy. Hard drive crash? Your removable drive has the most current version of all your critical data.

I tested this SW on my Test PC running Windows 7, across my network syncing with my normal day to day XP Pro PC. I then performed syncing both ways, just to test both OS. They all worked perfectly.

I then decide to install permanently on my XP Pro PC and synchronize my main data HD and folders to a 500GB USB HD. Configuration / scheduling the sync is easy, by date & time, on closing down or starting the PC, only files that have been changed ext. you can even utilise file "version control" by deciding NOT to delete older files once synchronization is completed by storing those "earlier version" files in another location.

I now use this synchronization SW as my "back-up" SW. I have it automatically perform a sync every time I turn my PC off, store the "older" files in a seperate location (on the same USB HD) PLUS I am able to sync / back-up my "work" data, "music" data and "Video" data.....3 different synchronization jobs.

Do yourself a favour go to http://allwaysync.com and have a look.

Here is the best part, it is FREE for moderate personal use, and if I can use it so can you.

  7. I tried OpenOffice, but it is....bad.

Slow to launch (15 seconds...3 seconds for MS Office), old GUI, not enough features...

If you don't want to go back to Office 2003, you'll not want to use OOo...

Again, I would also ask, what version of Open Office did you use? your comments made me test & time both Open Office (ver. 3.0.0.0 build 9358 and MS Office SP3.

Both SW apps opened in about the same time.....4.5 seconds when first opened, then less than 1.0 second on the second and subsequent times.

The above was tested on my Windows 7 test PC. I then ran the same procedure on my MS XP Pro main PC which I use daily with similar results. I am guessing that the Open Office "loader" or "quick launcher" (or what ever they call it) is not resident in your start up group.

Open Office is an ideal substitute for those not in a financial position to purchase MS Office.

  8. I think, a message box like "Finished defrag" would be nice to inform the user that a defragmentation run has finished. Now it just silently re-enables the "Defrag" and "Analyze" buttons.

Other programs give you a full-screen sized reoprt of the defrag process. That's an overkill, but some message would be nice. Or maybe just a notification sound.

    regards,

    Mike

Yes I agree, some sort of "I'm finished" dialog box would be handy.

  9. Don't list "empty" drives ;)

    Why NOT?

It is a great reminder for those that run multiple HD's (I run 6 drives in my main PC) just what size, amount used, amount free etc. one has on each hard drive in that PC. Maybe you meant to say "why show removable drive A"

  10. Three weeks ago I managed to break my Test Windows 7 PC, hardware issue, 5 year old HD. So a rebuild was very smartly performed. Since the rebuild I had not got around to "defragging" the unit which I usually do once all the apps have been installed.

Following MrG's announcement re "Defraggler v1.16" I downloaded and installed and ran the new version SW, the results speak for itself.

Test box is: 5 year old P4 CPU 2.80GHz (Hyperthreading), 1.5GIG PC3200 DDR RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 6200 Video Card, Windows 7, Home Premium, nothing special. 309GB WDC IDE HD, 240GB free, 10.8GB fragmented (27%), 351 files, 2,679 total fragments. 9GB of those files were a mixture of .avi & .VOB.

Defraggler v1.16 took 27 seconds to report the above results and only 49 minutes to complete defragmentation.

Given the amount of video & movie capture / editing, DIVX processing & intensive graphics work I push through this test PC, I consider less than 1 hour to defrag the PC is a job well done, thanks to Piriform. I have no hesitation in recommending this SW to my friends.

    Kind Regards

    USB

If possible , please include what are plugged into the USB ports..

Thank You for great software,,, love Ccleaner..

    Jim Andrews - Phoenix

A great idea to indicate what USB ports are being used seeing that these days we have so many USB ports available. What would also be nice to have is a list of vacant (unused) IO ports. Very handy when one asks one's self, "I wonder if i have a PCI slot for that TV capture card?".

Thanks very much to Piriform for next generation software...........have a great 2010
