  1. Is there a free alternative to Microsoft Office XP Publisher that is also compatable with it?

PS: If I download Microsoft Version of Publisher that has a product key number on it that is not authorized to me, will I get caught?

tommyk I have been using MS Publisher since the day that I was given a "NFR" copy of MS Publisher 98 Via MS Black Label Partners (boy that ages me) and I have paid for and upgraded through to my last purchase MS Office Professional 2003, (switched to Open Office) which includes MS Pub.

I only use Publisher for quick no charge jobs I do for charities.

I am not aware of any other DTP application that will handle .pub files. For my "chargeable jobs" I use apps such as: Corell Draw, Adobe In-Design, an Old version of PageMaker 6.0, and several other no-so well known DTP apps. (now only PC). For every day non professional dead easy DTP work, spend some money and purchase an OLD version of MS Publisher on e-bay, I recently spotted one sold for $15.00 Australian. Be careful of "compatibility" between MS Publisher versions, some are not even backward compatible.

  2. Hmm, I knew about iPod but have never heard of iPad.

I was thinking maybe it's a $900 pad to sit your iPod on.

iThink it is much to do about nothing..................iThink I've heard that statement before

  3. No problem. :D As a matter of fact, I'm using Glide right now too.

Also me to, many thanks "Icedrake". Have read articles on Glide OS 4.0 so after reading the comments here I thought I to would try it, am using it now, and like others, I now need to have a look around and get one's feet wet.....and it looks great. :P

  4. Thanks !

The problem is there since the early 3.6 builds, ant it's really annoying.

Many thanks for the heads up, I shall stay with 3.5.7 until the bugs are ironed out. In a previously life we were always 1 version old (at least) with all software, "let the others work out the issues" they used to say.

  5. Nirsoft's free reg scanner http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/regscanner.html is an ideal way to search the registry. It's very fleixble and lists all your search hits; unlike regedit which can only go to 'the next hit'.

Nice one Marmite, great advice, brought it down, ran it on Win 7 box & yes it is much better to be presented with search results all grouped together, a much safer way to fly.

Many thanks I shall be an avid user and recommend regscanner from here on in.

  6. You know what's messed up with this whole saga, some people actually claim this piece of garbage really does work lol. :D

    Richard S.

Best bet would be to buy him an airline ticket to Iraq or Pakistan, have the local Iraqi or Pakistani security forces meet him at the Airport. I am informed that they both provide an excellent Taxi service and I am sure will provide him with an equally excellent tour of "down town"...............good bye sunshine.............save us heaps in legal fees and prison food.

  7. I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post this question.

Anyway, the thing is I installed RTW (videogame) a long time ago in my old Hard Drive. Then I bought a new PC and a new hard drive but kept the old one too.

Then I deleted RTW from the old (C:) drive and tried to use the CD to install it in the new (D:) drive, but it keeps saying there is an old version of the game  in the PC so I cant reinstall, I was told to use Ccleaner but I dont know what exactly to do with CC.

    Help please :(

ALZU, if you haven't already done so, you may need to run "regedit" and manually search for anything to do with RTW in the Registry (use Ctrl + F) to search.

Please remember to make a "backup" of the Registry first.

Hope you don't mind me asking but are happy to perform such a task? and what OS are you running?

  8. With out starting a political debate on the war, but this is just wrong http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8476381.stm

Yes ident, it is very wrong as you say........hang the "barsteward" I say.

Unfortunately he will probably get a slap on the wrist, the story will be placed in the middle of the newspapers the next day, then they will send the $%^#&$%& out here to Australia or to the States with a different name just like some of the WW2 "crims".

ALZU, CTskifreak and his suggestions should be followed, the Guy always gives great directions / advice. (many thanks from me)

"What to do with CCleaner?" you ask............well

Mate CC (as you call it) it is "must have / must use" app to be included in ones software tool kit. Used on my 3 XP and Win 7 PC's, Uninstaller is 3 times faster in bringing the installed SW apps list to the screen for action, Start Up really lets you know / choose which & what is happening at start up, allows you to easily disable then re enable, System Restore is the fastest / easiest way to manage restore points. We have not even started on the features, benefits & advantages of Cleaner & Registry Tools Nor do I intend to do so here, do yourself a BIG favour, have a good look and run another great SW application from Piriform

PS: it would be nice to be able to print from Speccy..............please consider Piriform

  11. Believe it or NOT: here in Australia, the National news broadcasters this morning (radio, TV & Web) reporting on the MS IE browser / Google attacks finishes up by stating that the "Federal Government suggests business and home computer users use another browser for a while until MS comes up with an answer to the reported problem." end quote. This is true folks, you GOTTA wonder!!

  12. I defragged my E: partition a few times when my Image was located there, and each time I did, I made sure to run a "Verify" on the Image afterwards.

Always came up OK, but if it didn't, it would have been easy enough to knock a new one out. My Image is now on a separate internal drive, which I'm using only for backups.

Thank you DennisD for your prompt reply, I shall proceed with the defrag & "verify".

  13. I'm all in agreement with storing personal data on external drives, and the backup copies to another external location, but I think you missed the point I was making to Picablu, and I say that respectfully.

The statement was directed solely to any personal stuff she may keep on her System Drive, which would obviously be included in, and part of, the Macrium Image backup of her System Drive.

Because a Disk Image can be easily mounted as a normal drive, and explored and copied from like an ordinary hard drive, it's almost as good as a File/Folder backup.

If people aren't aware of this capability of an "Image" backup, then they would be missing out on the ability to explore it and retrieve files from it as you would a backup folder. That's the point I was making.

Of course not everyone has multi hard drives at their disposal. I've been working with a single, partitioned 80gb hard drive for 3 years, and only very recently came into possession of a second hard drive from my sons old computer.

It's important to make as clear as possible to people in this position that there are still ways to make reliable and restorable System Drive backups. Hence all the recent discussions on Partitioning.

DennisD, your point taken, agreed and understood. My emphasis on additional hard drives where possible, are subject to funds being available.

  14. Must say for the outset, Defraggler is a great app, and I use regularly on all my PC's. Great work Piriform.

My question re defragging large backup files comes from the following analysis of a dedicated 500GB backup drive:

    6 fragmented files (7.8GB) - 44 total fragments - 24% fragmentation

90% of the 7.8GB fragmented files are: 2 Paragon backup files. Is it safe to defrag these files?

  15. Funny. I must be from the old age because I really don't get the appeal of those social networking sites, and don't visit them.

As I said, "Tongue in cheek" and I agree with you...........no appeal at all, I have NOT and spend no time at all with social networking. To me it the place where one can lose / have stolen one's identity. Good luck to those that participate.

  16. Thank you Tasgandy.

You're the first member I'm aware of from Tasmania, and it's pretty cool to get a happy birthday from a Piriform member who is possibly in the farthest place on the planet away from my home in the UK.

    :)

I certainly am a long way from you in the UK. Just 3 weeks ago my wife and I drove down to the most Southern part of Tasmania to a place called Cockle Creek, where the road STOPS, Yes the dirt / sand road actually stops, you can not drive any further south on any formed track, right of way or dirt road. Funny thing to state, but it felt good. follow the link for more info & enjoy.

  17. A sprightly 59, all my own teeth, most of my own hair, but not quite into the pipe and slippers stage yet.

    :)

DennisD, a "it's never to late to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY" from Tasmania, the small island below the Australian mainland...........have a great 2010

  18. Hey Guys i don't know if anyone has brought these up yet as i haven't read through the topics, but here are a few ideas i have to add functionality to the Speccy Software.

I've love what i see so far. But there are a few features that could be very useful.

For instance. The program give me the current temperatures for the Hard Drives & the Add-on Graphics Card, but not for the CPU & memoery sectors.

Maybe you could also include hardware monitoring as a feature & also monitor the PSU Voltages & Fan Speeds. Eliminating the need for Intel Desktop Utilites & of course being universal.

The program also has potential for warrenty managment.

The software seems to give all the info on the Hard drives except for the Hard Drive Serial number.

This would be convienient for warrenty management. Esp if you have mutiple drives in your PC or a raid Cofiguration.

It would also be great to get the serial number for the CPU as that a real mission to get that serial number for warrenty claims.

Now i could get all the information i would want about my PC with the use of one application, instead of having to use DXDiag, Intel Desktop Utilities & funny apps like below, which now seem to be incompatible with Windws 7.

    http://www.diskserialnumber.com/

    http://www.soft.tahionic.com/download-hdd_id/index.html

    http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

In fact Even better maybe you could incorporate a serial Key reader for MS Windows & MS Office under the Operating System report. Eliinating the need for programs like these.

    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

    http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/

I could save a report for the system specs for IT Hardware Audits & Make sense of software legality for software audits.

Eliminating the need for yet another program.

Thanks so much for getting the ball rolling on yet another awsome program from Piriform.

HotPoint Solutions you have hit the nail right on the head with all your suggestions, you have my vote. By the way I have been using "Belarc Advisor" now for about 5 years, it's the first thing I run when starting work on a clients PC, just to get an instant "truthful overview" of just what I am about to attempt to fix.

PRODUCT INFORMATION: The Belarc Advisor builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware, missing Microsoft hotfixes, anti-virus status, CIS (Center for Internet Security) benchmarks, and displays the results in your Web browser. All of your PC profile information is kept private on your PC and is not sent to any web server.

    Operating Systems: Runs on Windows 7, 2008 R2, Vista, 2008, 2003, XP, 2000, NT 4, Me, 98, and 95. Both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows is supported.

Browsers: Runs on Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera, and many others.

    File size: 2194 KB.

License: The license associated with this product allows for free personal use only. Use on multiple PCs in a corporate, educational, military or government installation is prohibited. See the license agreement for details.

  19. That is funny. Bit scary that those guys are so serious about that stuff. Lawyers, no less. Makes one think of E.M. Forster's The Machine Stops.

Sounds like a great idea to me................tongue in cheek...............I can hear my 23 & 25 year old kids yelling "don't do it Dad....please don't"

OPPS! sorry Guys. You gotta laugh, it is FUNNY

  20. Remember Picablu, you are actually backing up your personal files located on your System Drive (usually C:) with a Macrium Image backup made with the free version.

We have two very similar threads active at the moment and you may want to read the other in it's entirety, but the post linked to here explains how to mount your backup Image as a drive, which enables you to access all the files stored within the Image.

    http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showto...st&p=157865

And you can use Karens Replicator to make separate backups of all your personal stuff, which means you will have two backups of the stuff you least want to lose.

Karens Replicator can be set up to copy your personal files automatically from where you store them, to a chosen folder or folders on another partition or drive.

You can set it to only copy new additions from the source folder/folders to the backup locations, meaning you won't be duplicating files in your backup folders.

I use it to scan my photographs and music folders at regular intervals, and copy only new additions to those folders to the backup.

These are only suggestions of course. The choices are entirely yours. But keep coming with the questions if you are still unclear about anything.

DennisD, you state "backing up your personal files located on your System Drive (usually C:)". In the case of desktop PC's, surely one is better to have at least 2 physical hard drives so that we have drive "C" containing system and apps files and all data is written to another physical hard drive.

This way when drive "C" refuses to boot or whatever......one just slips the data drive into another PC and we are up and away. This approach has saved my bacon several times with by work PC's. I also have the luxury of 5 HD in my work PC and access to 4 other PC's on the network that all have 3 or more hard drives set up with the same approach. Admit-ably one needs the money for 2 hard drives and a "spare PC", not so practical for Laptop users, but 2 partitions with system & apps on one partition and data on the other. I feel this approach is worth considering.

  21. Most of us probably know about Partition Wizard Personal Edition for "Limited personal use", yes?

Well but right now (not sure how long for) you can download the software then register for it for FREE. Please read the following.

  22. I have to say I haven't any experience of creating one from scratch. I have a Dell desktop that I ordered with two drives configured as a RAID 1 mirror. It uses Intel RAID software to manage this. I've played around with 'breaking' and rebuilding the mirror but not actually configuring the drivers or software.

From the little I've just read, it seems as though it is easier to do it from blank disks, rather than convert a set of disks that already have a system on data into a RAID array (be it RAID 1 or any other flavour).

A RAID array can of course offer you built in resilience and redundancy. But since you aren't starting from scratch it may well be something that you'd have to be keen on doing as a project ... making sure you have all of your back-ups in place first ;)

But since you already seem to have a disciplined back-up regime in place and running, the effort involved in creating a RAID array may not be worthwhile.

I've seen a few posts on here from people with RAID configurations ... you may yet get some better-informed advice :)

Thanks for the info and from what I have now read since your sensible suggestion it looks like RAID5 is what I need with perhaps 3 HD's. So I shall now take this on in a test environment first. RAID5 will give me all of the RAID benefits, security and speed.

  23. Tasgandy, with that many bays to play with have you considered running a RAID mirror?

Marmite, no I have not, perhaps because I do not know much about setting up a Mirror drive. However your suggestion makes sense so I shall commence research. Do you have any suggestions? and thanks for your reply.
