  1. Logged on here using Puppy 5, no idea what this will look like. :-)

Looks like it worked, so here is another.

They look just fine from down here in Tasmania Login123, her is another one I thought was topical in this forum.

  2. Hello,

I was directed here by a member of the Yahoo Group, SimplyComputers, simplycomputers2@yahoogroups.com

Anyway another member wanted to see ALL the network adapters in his computer: PCI, PCI-E, PCI-X, USB WI-FI, etc. I know there are Linux tools that can do this, but it would be nice to find a Windows tool, too.

    Thanks,

    Joan in Reno

To assist you in answering your question I have attached the following .xml file produced by Piriform's Speccy - a snapshot just taken from my PC. Hope this helps.

  3. During my recent "Road Trip" of Victoria & South Australia I came across several "unusual sign's" by the side of a lake.

Now I am sure all of you out there have from time to time come across unusual, funny, stupid, hard to understand, "now that's a DUMB sign" etc. why not share them?

I don't know if there are any takers out there that wish to participate in this subject, in the hope that there are I submit the following 2 sign's.

Now these 2 sign's were located at the same "Recreation/Tourist" location at Mt. Gambier in South Australia.

One sign refers to the water quality and the other refers to water sports. Remembering that to partake in these nominated water sports (sign 1) one needs to & will get wet. In light of this the other sign is "Dumb" hard to fathom. B) (These sign's were 3 metres apart).

    So folks, wanna join in?

  4. LOL, I know you intended ME to see this.

I'll consider installing it when I get a new hard drive. I can always use it from the USB anyways.

Actually Ishi I thought you were off the air for a couple of weeks, thought you were going away. Anyhow make sure you check "Getdeb.net". :D

  5. For those of you out there that are "trying" your hand at Ubuntu (just one flavour of Linux) and are experiencing some issues with Software installation via the "Terminal screen" and attempting to get your head around the correct syntax eg."sudo, apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras" and the like (I know I am, I am getting confused with the old days of DOS syntax) I have come across another "easy" installation procedure other than the built-in "Ubuntu Software Centre" installation, or downloading .deb files/packages when you can find them.

Have a read and look at: Getdeb.net

    GetDeb Software Portal

GetDeb is an unofficial project with the mission to provide the latest open source and freeware applications for the current Ubuntu Linux release, in an easy to install manner.

The GetDeb repository extends the official repositories by providing latest versions and new applications. Unlike the official packages, GetDeb packages do not have a predefined release schedule - new software versions are provided as they become available from their authors. There is a short and limited testing phase instead of a full testing cycle to ensure packaging quality, however it is less strict than Ubuntu's official requirements.

So folks following their instructions will deliver a "foolproof" installation procedure that will have you installing all sorts of packages. I have just installed such things as: DVD movie RIP's, PDF editor, Video editing, Movie/Video/Music/Books/Picture data bases etc. I have even noticed business accounting packages similar to my QuickBooks Pro software I use in Windows XP.

I now am able to see if it is possible for me to replace Windows with Ubuntu for my day to day computer usage, well practice at it at least.

  6. Time to reevaluate not having an anti-virus/anti-malware installed all the time, especially if more than one person is using the computer because you can't know everything they'll download and run.

    I recommend reading here:

    http://forum.pirifor...showtopic=20214

Well done Andavari, the beginning of another fire that was about to &$%^%^*(% you jumped in just in time and put the fire out, well done and keep up the good work...............this is a GREAT forum for assistance. :)

  7. When I put in my password a facebook page came up saying there was an attempt at 1:08am to gain access to my account. It said the country of origin was Canada and then asked me if I recognized the attempt. I was unsure about the whole thing so I closed my browser and switched over to my laptop and got the same page asking me the same questions. It also included the attempt I had just made from my desktop. So when I clicked no (about if I recognized the attempt from Canada) it sent me a link in my email to change my password and such. I still think someone just had a similar email and typed mine by mistake. It would be rare but it could happen. But everything's been ok since I changed the email and password so for now, I'm happy.

LuLu if the situation is still worrying you (understandable) why not change your e-mail address as well, particularly as you said it is only a "junk e-mail" address. This time use a password of made up of 3 sets of characters (mixed upper & lower case) & numbers i.e.

er38tY92Fp77 similar to Windows 2008 Server passwords these days.

  8. I was advised before I joined this forum, not to do so. I was told, "Don't bother - they are all too busy congratulating themselves on how smart they are to actually take the time to inform someone who is not 'tech-savvy,' in order for them to become more informed. They're like surgeons: anyone who isn't them, isn't worthy of their time. They think they have nothing to learn from anyone else, because only their disciplines contain any 'real' information.

Because I believe in people, I denied that this would be the only possible outcome, and tried to get help here. Now, I'm sorry to say, I do believe it. When I posted a problem, the basic response was "Don't bother trying to understand this, it's all beyond you." When I objected, anhd asked for the information to make a choice myself, the further response was "Mind what your betters tell you, you fool!"

You folks see yourselves as the leading edge, I'm sure, but your attitudes are so reactionary that I'm surprised you approve of fire! It is this kind of "unthink," and refusal to take personal responsibility for one's own decisions, that leads to revolution, because it encourages leaders NOT to listen.

    Bah, humbugs!

Allthumbs it is a shame that you have adopted this "humbug attitude", and with your permission I would like to ask you to settle down, take a big deep breath and look very carefully at just what you have stated in your "verbal broadside" post as above.

If your statements above were true, you would not be receiving so many forum members still attempting to help you by explaining themselves and their actions, and continuing to offer you a platform where you can ask for and receive advice, ideas and suggestions for any questions you may still have now and in the future.

Now how about starting all over again, because you most likely still have the same issues/problems; did you try any of the advice? did you report back on the outcomes? has the situation improved? or is it worse?

PS: as Talldog9 asked you, who was it that told you not to join the forum? B)

  9. Are any of you Imgur users having problems with the site?

I can't get it to upload anything, and my Screenshot above has disappeared, although the thumbnail remains. The one with the Piriform pear.

DennisD I just had a look (No. #4) and it worked for me............good looking desktop.

  10. The truth is that, I think I failed the CD install twice or more, the USB install once because of the "unrecoverable error", and the Wubi install twice because of denied permission thing.

But did you did recently make a rebuild before you get this Wubi install right today???? You said you did but was it today??? Or have you changed any settings before you got it to work??? I assume you did not cause you said you have no idea why.

If a rebuild is the best option, then fine, I'll look into it and see what I can do :)

So in theory my best option is Rebuild + install via Wubi

Yes Ishi, It was about 1 week ago that I rebuilt my test PC. Re installed Win 7, then XP Pro, then booted into Win7, launched the Wubi Ubuntu installer, and that install went perfectly. It is the one that I am now running with no issues at all.

During the install the only thing I did was to input my chosen password, location where I wanted the Ubuntu OS installed (last partition on the second physical hard drive), the Wubi installer picked up the CD drive that contained the same ISO that refused to install previously.

Then yesterday (after reading your log for the second time) I attempted to install Ubuntu on a new empty 20GIG hard drive on the laptop and failed 3 times. I even tried again at 2.00am this morning (Tuesday 15th) twice with the same bloody result FAILED due to that same bloody Error message. The install then proceeded to install as "live CD" to RAM so I could diagnose the problem, well that's what the message said. But I was non the wiser. Just had 6 hours sleep and here I am again.

The only benefit in this long process and a rebuild is that I am enjoying the final successful install of Ubuntu.

I need another cup of coffee.

  11. I don't even need a password. I just managed to open the built-in administrator account a few hours ago with ease. Thank God, you have Goggle, you just have to type lusrmgr.msc on Run and it launches this MMC console that you can choose to enable the built-in Administrator account. Works for most editions of Win 7. If you open it, no password is needed by default.

If you want to open the built in Administrator on Windows XP, its even simpler and I did it a heck of a lot of times. Just press Ctrl+Alt+Del two times on the log on screen and type Administrator on the prompt and hit ENTER, walla, you get to access the built in Admin account on Windows XP but this shouldn't work if the Task Manager is disabled by someone with another Admin account, I think.

So, you just attempted to install Ubuntu via CD on a 20GB empty drive on a laptop just now???? And it failed 3 times because of an unrecoverable error??? You know what, I had the very same warning about this freaking "unrecoverable error". Don't you think there is a sequence of events that leads this to happen and makes Ubuntu's installation fail???? I think there must be a pretty bad bug or error about this and the Ubuntu devs should look into it.

Now at least, I can tell I'm not the only one faced with that problem.

Hey there Ishi that is interesting info re gaining access to the admin account, I'll remember that one.

Re my issue of FAILED install of Ubuntu 10.04 on the laptop, remember I said several posts ago that the same thing happened when I originally attempted to install on my test PC. I have even downloaded the bloody 700MB ISO file twice, and no matter which install CD I use the result is the same.....FAILED re the error message. That is when I went searching (as you say thank god for Google) for an answer and came up with "Wubi Ubuntu Installer" - I USED THE SAME INSTALL CD THAT FAILED TWICE AND AGAIN THIS EVENING, BUT VIA the Wubi installer it BLOODY WELL WORKED, and I have no idea why. Your experiences only confuses the situation more.

Hence I maintain, do a re build and start from scratch.....I did and it worked. Remember to date, between you and I we have recored at least 6 failed installs over 3 PC's and 1 laptop.......I think I shall go and watch an action movie and have a Bundy and coke. :P

  12. LOL, I started from XP to Vista to Windows 7 and I now feel I need more!!!! And yes, part of the budget will go to hardware improvements such as hard drives on my plans.

What you are telling me is that I should open the computer via the built in administrator account and try to install from there and see what turns out???

But frankly, I am too lazy to install too many programs and store so many files. I think I may have less than 5 or 6GB worth of all my programs and files combined together now that my recorded TV are gone.

Yes Ishi that is correct, try longing in as user name: administrator

    Hopefully you know the password?

I just used the same ISO disc Ubuntu 10.04 that I used to install via Wubi, this time I tried to install on a laptop with a empty blank 20GIG hard drive and got half way through and "Failed" (did it 3 times of fact - same result) it reported some sort of unrecoverable error. This I have seen before on my Test PC, hence the reason I went for the Wubi Ubuntu installer.

Buggered if I know what's happening, now I am in the middle of installing Puppy 5.0.1 on the laptop. :(

  13. Well its not looking too simple. I did not use a third party boot manager whatsoever to install Solaris, I just created a partition like what I said and burned the Solaris ISO into the CD and booted from it then presto, it was installed.

I have have tried 3 ways of installing Ubuntu and I have failed trice.

    1. Install via CD....FAILED...... if I try to specify a partition where to install, it says, "no root directory specified". If I try to choose "install alongside Windows" it will cut my Windows 7 partition in to two which I can't at the moment cause like what I stated, more than half of my C: drive is filled. When I tried this when my C: drive used to be bigger, the installation fails at 49% because it says there was a drive error or something.

2.Install using a bootable USB....FAILED......the same problems happen like the CD install.

    3. Install via Wubi...FAILED....it says that permission is denied or something.

The only mistake I seem to have made is that I always did a quick format on the partition where I try to install Ubuntu but that does not explain why Solaris was installed on a quick-formatted drive anyway. I did a non-quick format on drive O: last night and I would try to install Ubuntu in there again using Wubi and see if it goes any better. I also managed to unhide the AppData folder like what Aethec suggested and I would attempt another install later today if I could. But I wish my Internet was faster though.

If it fails from there, maybe a rebuild is the best option and if that fails as well, then I assume my hard drive is just not compatible with Ubuntu.

But I'd rather save some money on a Windows 8 CD someday lol...

A quick format is not really a mistake however it is always best to do a "full" format, some might call it a "low level format", still I do not see why Ubuntu failed to install, especially in light of the fact as you say, Solaris installed correctly. As you did not do the original install of Win7 why not log on as "administrator" not as a user with admin rights to see if there is a different result. Following this step, If it was me (and it was me 3 weeks ago) I would be rebuilding (re installing once you have backed up your data files etc.) and starting from scratch, assuming you still wish to run Ubuntu, and I wouldn't blame you if you didn't. BUT Windows 8, bloody hell Windows 7 is only 6 months old; I think you best get a bigger hard drive so you can run several operating systems similar to me, at least 2 physical hard drives about 500GIG to 1.0TB is called for.

Let me know what happens......good luck.

  14. And one more thing, if I managed to install Solaris successfully a few days ago, why can't I install Ubuntu????

Ishi now I really am stumped.. given that you recently installed Solaris, I do not know why you can not install Ubuntu. When you installed Solaris were you using a third party boot manager? Was Win7 the first OS listed in the boot sequence? How did you get rid of Solaris? perhaps there is still some reference to Solaris in the boot.ini file?

A rebuild....what I mean is re install Windows 7, start from scratch.

Write your data to a couple of DVD's and assuming you have all your original software application CD's / DVD's etc you could rebuild your Win 7 OS, choose the number of partitions required and size. I would suggest 1 partition for Win 7 and apps, 1 partition for Data (your personal files and your movies) and 1 or 2 partitions for you to load other Operating systems like Ubuntu / Windows 98 / or whatever. Always keep your data on a separate partition so that even without a backup (which you really should have) you are able to easily do a rebuild at the drop of a hat. Otherwise the amount of time it looks like it may take to work out / solve the Ubuntu install issue you could have reinstalled you original OS and applications.

    What do you think?

  15. Help, even with the Wubi Ubuntu installer, I can't. I keep having problems. Here is what the wubi-10.04-rev189 log file has to say which I don't even understand. I says that an error has occurred and that permission is denied.

Ishi I also am not sure I understand the log and I can imagine at this stage of the process you are ready to give up.....don't.

When I reached the stage that you are now I simply did a complete rebuild, BUT I did have up to date complete images of my drive C: and my data drive D:

Let's see if I have got this correct.

Drive C: 22gig with 10gig free - Win7 OS + apps? have you backed up this drive (complete image)

Drive D: 16gig with 14gig free - Prog & Files? what sort of programs (apps?) and Data files? - have you backed this data (files) up?

Drive H: 35gig with 34gig free (I take it you use this to store movies?)

Are you able to do a fresh Win 7 install, then a Wubi Ubuntu install?

  16. Thanks but I don't wanna sacrifice to much space since Ubuntu requires at least 15GB space on a partition.

    Part original post reply

    5. If I partition H: drive again, I would have little space left for everything like files and recorded TV. My main problem now is that I can't figure out to delete drive D: so that I could combine the free space with drive C: again.

    6. I only have one physical Hard drive though.

This is too complicated to explain lol.

But the good side is that I can still carry my Ubuntu USB and test that on other computers like a portable OS.

Ishi it's probably not any comfort to you that I had to go through several installs / re builds / reading etc. until I was able to end up with a stable & usable 3 OS's on one PC. Lucky for me I supose that I had 2 physical HD's both with heaps of space as my movie drive is a 1.0TB USB attached to which evre PC is available at the time.

Re your issue of "deleting" drive D: and combining it with C:... go to: Free Partition SW

So I can assure you this SW works, I have used it several times during my problems I had.

From memory you need to re format drive D: first, then you could "Resize" (expand) drive C: all from within Windows 7.

Let me know how you go. PS. from memory the download is only about 10MB

  17. No, I don't use a virtual machine. I burned the Ubuntu ISO on a CD and tried to dual boot it with Windows 7. I also made a bootable USB where Ubuntu can be booted and tried to install it from there but it still fails.

But I can still run Ubuntu from the USB and do stuff with it and that is how I can use it at this point. However, I now managed to configure my DSL connection on Ubuntu but basically, the webpages won't barely load, probably because Ubuntu's Mozilla Firefox would depend everything on the space left within the USB itself which may no be enough to handle web browsing.

Further to my last response Ishi I am pleased to state that I have now managed (with 5 cups of coffee, office door closed) successfully installed, tested and used "real time" from my Ubuntu build the following IO devices: Canon MF4150 laser network printer (hanging via USB off my Main PC - Win XP Pro), locally my Canon 1220U flatbed scanner & Canon IXUS 750 digital camera. Just finished installing Adobe Acrobat Reader Ver 9.X. I gotta say I love this Linux stuff............it's quick, just hope it does not slow down like the Windows PC's tend to do after 12 months of hard use. B)

Ishi do yourself a favour visit and have a read:install Ubuntu from Win7

I have done what you are trying to do with no issues at all using Wubi - Ubuntu installer. i.e. installed Win7 first, (in my case then XP) then from a Win7 boot, run the Wubi Ubuntu installer, and on re boot I get the choice of Win7 / XP / Ubuntu, all work with no issues at all. All apps work very well across all OS's. Firefox & Thunderbird much faster under Ubuntu than Windows. I am using an old P4, 2.8Ghz, 1.5gig RAM PC. and I really have no Linux experience hence I jumped at the idea if a Windows installer. Let me know how you go or require detailed assistance.

  19. pear_big_w.pngAs well as making great software, we're also aiming for a great website!

So we've moved things around and restyled certain sections to make the Piriform website faster to navigate, and also slightly easier on the eye! :)

We hope you like the changes.

    View the full blog post

I for one say "FANTASTIC" MrG, well done I think it looks great and yes very easy on the eyes. Also easy to move around and fast.

Keep up the good work Piriform :D

  20. I found out the NVIDIA drivers display corruption I've been dealing with for countless months in various programs which aren't drawn correctly was a super simple solution.

Kudos go straight to Microsoft for this fix!;) I installed the Microsoft DirectX v9.0c (June 2010) Redistribution package from FileHippo.com as a last ditch effort before taking the display card out and buying a different brand, and it worked! The display corruption has completely disappeared.:)

Andavari many thanks I am downloading now, hope it works for me. :P

  21. Gonna try the puppy install again like before. Be a while, tho, mostly be gone for about 2 weeks. Thanks a million for all the help so far.

As we say in Aus "no sweat" catch you on your return.............. B)

  22. I was missing for 2.5 weeks on a driving holiday around the Victorian country side, (Australia) up in the mountains, down on the coast etc. traveled 3,660KLM's with my Dear Wife, which was great but I have to admit, I missed you all, it's great to be back and out of all the forums I have been involved with this is "THE BEST" - thank you all.

Congrats to all, pat your self on the back :D
