  1. Printer prices are ridiculously cheap compared to what they used to be. That looks a good deal.

The first printer I bought was to go with a Commodore Amiga bought as a xmas present for my son quite a few years ago.

It was a Star 9 pin dot matrix. About as basic as you could get, and it cost ?245. English pounds note, not dollars. At the same time, the Amiga cost ?250.

The best part of ?500 for 512mb Amiga, and a s**t printer. :(

I've still got the receipt, which I'm thinking of putting in a frame.

Ridiculous by today's standards. My first printer was an HP Inkjet. Think it cost about $250 at that time (about 8 years ago).

I should add that the Lexmark 3500 copies, scans, prints photos and can be used as a Fax machine. Wonderful package for the price of an ink head :D

  2. I fix PCs as a hobby as I am thankfully retired and I can watch the boring election results for as long as I can stay awake.

LOL Just clicked your 2KB link. Hilarious! I love it!

BTW, how do you accomplish these links. I know its very simple if you know how.

  3. The weirdest thing ever....

I ran out of ink on my Lexmark 1600 printer so I went shopping to buy a black & white ink head. Found the Lexmark ink head in Walmart - $38 - hmm!

I then decided to go to the Super Store (I think these stores are only in Canada) because that is where I purchased my printer from. Hmm...same price for the ink head :( Then I looked on the shelf under the ink head shelf and there it was...a Lexmark 3500 Printer. Price $40 (Canadian). Looking at the box I quickly realized that this printer seemed even better than my printer (the 1600 model). No brainer...the heck with buying the ink head, just buy the new printer and give my printer to Good Will or something. I brought it home and found it to be a real easy install (using the provided CD). I took it for a test run and found it real nice to use and great quality. This truly is one of the weirdest things - just makes no sense to me - for $2 more I got a brand new and better printer of excellent quality.

For those of you interested in this printer:

Some stores that sell the Lexmark 3500 are:

Walmart, Staples, Office Depot, Home Depot, Zellers, President's Choice Super Store and Future Shop.

Note: the only additional item you need to purchase is a USB cable. Naturally if you are replacing your printer then you just use that USB cable.

If you are looking for a first time printer purchase, looking to replace your old printer, or simply if you run out of ink....I highly recommend this printer.

  4. That's how I found my avatar.

I like to do this on my Birthday because it is usually cold, snowy and bleak with nothing better to do it makes me feel better.

When I get a system to look at the first thing I do is remove the dust bunnies then work on whatever is ailing the system.

I now know how important keeping on top of having a clean PC is. Live and learn. So YoKenny, you fix PCs as your occupation or as a hobby?

  5. I noticed this morning that the desktop icons for my Firefox, Paint.Net, SuperAntiSpyware are gone and in their place a little white box with a blue banner thing on top is there in their places. Any clues as to why they changed and how i go about getting the regular icons back? I did a system restore with no luck. Also right clicked a blank area of my desktop and did a refresh. No luck so far. Thanks!

David, if I understand your problem correctly then all you need to do is right-click the icon and then click the Change Icon button in the popup, then click Browse and then navigate to the desired folder, highlight the desired icon and then clcik Open. Now clcik Apply and then OK. Your icon should now be in place.

For example, to get your Firefox icon back, you would navigate to the Firefox folder and highlight (or click) "firefox.exe" (typically your folder would be labeled "Mozilla Firefox" and typically located within your Program Files).

Hope this helps. I have no idea why just these icons would have suddenly disappeared.

  6. Looking at the front of the pc take the left panel off and blow out any dust, especially around the heatsink for the cpu, in fact blow out any and any all dust!

Today I realized that I had not posted that my sudden shut down problem was solved a short while ago. I repeated the procedure Humpty had mentioned but this time I removed the fan installed over the CPU heatsink and there it was...dust just pasted all over the heatsink. Dust and crap I could not see without removing the fan. I cleaned as much as possible off with a Q-tip and then blasted air at it to finish the heatsink clean. I also removed ALL fans and cleaned each fan with a wet Q-tip. After blasting all over with air and having everything spic and span I decided that since I had everything open I may as well replace the power supply with a new power supply (this was even after removing the cover from my old power supply and cleaning the fan and blasting air to remove all dust/dirt). My reason for replacing the power supply was because I found out how cheap they are (I paid $29 Canadian) and thought it would be a good idea since my other power supply was about 5 or 6 years old.

I'm glad to report that all is working great now....no more sudden shut downs. At least now I know how to do a thorough cleaning job which I plan on implementing as an annual event.

Thanks again guys for all your time spent on my various questions!! You have all been very helpful.

  7. Excellent topic-post Dennis1%20(46).gif

Since being a member of "Piriform Forums" I have learned lots, and received immeasurable amounts of help from many regular Members and Moderators.

My sincere thanks to all :)

I could not have expressed my feelings any better!! Well said, craigathus. I have had quite a few problems and all the guys and gals on this forum have been unbelievably helpful. I would have been in quite a mess without you all!

Concerning Screen Capture, I use the same as YoKenny (MVSnap). I use PixPipeline for image hosting (recommended some time ago by Dennis).

    Very happy with both. :)

  8. Razz did you give the ''what do I do if this doesn't work '' a try in my link in post number 2?

That worked for me after I uninstalled Nero a few years ago and only pio mode would show.

Hi Hazelnut, ty for your link. Within the page of that link you supplied there is the following chart:

Drive letter IDE ATA/ATAPI controller Device

    C:\ Primary 0

    D:\ Primary 1

    E:\ Secondary 0

    F:\ Secondary 1

Does this not mean that the secondary controller is assigned to F:drive? ... in which case I don't need to worry because my concern is my D:drive which, according to the chart, is assigned the Primary controller. In my case, my Primary is in Ultra DMA mode. Am I missing something? This stuff is confusing for me and I appreciate all the help I have received from everyone on this forum.

  9. Another enabling DMA guide is here which I've used for years. You definitely want to get that drive working in DMA mode as PIO mode is s**t.

A drive can go into PIO mode when there's many errors on a CD/DVD - it's an annoying anti-feature on WinXP that I wish never existed.

I checked and my primary is Ultra DMA Mode 6 ...YAY! Good!...but my secondary is PIO Mode :( I followed instructions as to how to change it to DMA but it's not working. According to here (link that Andavari provided) it states the following:

check your BIOS settings. Make sure you have Ultra DMA enabled, or if they are in PIO only mode. Change them to Auto DMA or something similiar. It tends to be very BIOS specific.
    .

My question is: what is the best way to check your BIOS settings? Who knows, that may be my problem even though you would think if that was the case then my primary would also be in PIO mode.

  10. Razz, sorry this is way off topic, but I just noticed that your avie is an optical illusion between a womans' face and a saxophone player. Normally I pick up on this sort of thing sooner.

You are so right. ;) I really liked it when I saw it so I decided to use it here - even though I am not a woman and I could not play the sax even if my life depended on it (I would love to though!).

I have a 1.9MB folder with 79 optical illusions. If anyone is interested I can see about uploading to some site for public download.

  11. I am using Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition to create a project I am working on. I have used "LinkLabel" in my project which supports hyperlink. Now I just need to enter the proper code to activate the URL link that I am trying to insert. For example, one LinkLabel I have is for Google. I can't figure out the proper code, does anyone here know what the code is to accomplish this?

    Thanks much!

  12. Recently I purchased a new LG CD/DVD ROM and installed it on my computer. With this purchase came a CD with Nero Express and Nero 7 essentials.

I already have and use Ashampoo (which I really like) but I wanted to check out this CD. After install I ran the program and the following message appeared:

This application has detected that your drive is not in DMA (direct memory access) mode. To improve your system performance we suggest you enable DMA for all drives, Do you wish to run Nero DMA Manager to enable DMA mode right now?

I have no idea what DMA is and certainly no idea if my drives should be in this mode. You guys are very clever on this forum and I was hoping someone would know whether I should enable DMA or just leave things as they are. My PC is certainly running very well right now :)

  13. Thank you for the suggestions guys. After some thought, I decided to utilize my experience with HTML (although not extensive, but extensive enough for me to have designed my own website) to create my own homepage. At least now I am sure not to get any ads :D

  14. The route I go:

    1. Use the programs built-in and included uninstaller.

    2. Use Total Uninstall to remove many of the left overs.

    3. Go on a physical disk hunt for any left over appdata.

    4. Look in the registry for any left overs in HKCU\Software and HKLM\Software.

    5. Run CCleaner's registry cleaner, and two other registry cleaners.

I usually follow the same procedure, except for #2. I was just hoping that there was some magical uninstaller that I did not know about, but according to your posts, there is not. I think I will add Total Uninstall to the mix.

  15. I dunno what you did with Foobar razz, but it has the smallest footprint of all of them.

With it's very simple interface open, it hits about 11-12mb on my pc, but when mimimised to the system tray, as mine is now, it usually hovers around 2-3mb, consistently.

    t400_FoobarMemory.jpg

You'll probably gather I'm a Foobar diehard, and there's nothing at all wrong with your choice of player, but if you're looking for a small footprint, as far as I'm aware, nothing beats Foobar. And it's simple interface hides an absolute wealth of sophisticated features.

Just thought I'd mention that. :)

You are correct Dennis! Foobar does have a small footprint. Just checked again with Foobar minimized and it does hover around 3mb. Notice that I had not uninstalled Foobar ;) I liked it so I kept it along with Spider.

    Happy Listening
