  1. It seems that the new Blackberry (BB) is gaining market share in Canada. In other words, people seem to like the new BB.

Is the US consumer going to embrace the BB as well ? But US electronics sales are down some 11% (!!!)

"Some of the changes on an unadjusted basis were colossal. Electronics were off 11%. Food and beverage stores (groceries) were off 7.5% (!!) Gas was off about 4%, but remember that gas prices have been coming down, so the volume is likely close to unchanged. And internet-based sales were down 1.2%."

  2. Final report:

    1. I ditched MSE completely.

    2. Switched off the WinDefend Service. Didn't kill it though.

    3. Since MSE & WinDefender seem to be the slowest security software, I now also don't trust MS Firewall any more. Switched the MS firewall Service off as well.

    4. AVAST AV has 10 shields. I only activated the "Behaviour" and "file" shields.

    5. Activated the AVAST firewall as well.

    6. Malwarebytes still installed as a backup (intend to run it every say 1 to 2 weeks). It isn't a "loud mouth" program like MSE.

The end result is that CPU usage is significantly lower, icons always show up on the task bar and opening files takes significantly less time.

  3. I found an answer for this problem. It had to do with MS Security & MS Defender. I finally and completely ditched MS Security Essentials (MSSE). MSSE has the nasty habit of starting a process ("MsMpeng.exe") that can't be killed even when the program is NOT in "Real Time Protection" mode. MSSE seems to be the slowest "kid on the block", the slowest AV program.

I still have the Malwarebytes AV software installed but that program is much more modest in behaviour. Glad I use the AVAST AV program instead.

  4. Came across other translation related bugs in DF. Two words don't get translated inmediately after I change the language from e.g. english to dutch:

    1. I need to click on the drivemap to get the string "[File entry"] translated to the dutch string "[Mapwaarde]".

    2. The word "Highlighted" also doesn't get translated. I need to close that tab and click on block that represents a piece of a file to re-open that "Highlighted" tab. Then the dutch translation string shows up.

    See attachment.

  5. DF also fails to display the proper size of a directory file. I came across such a file and I know that directory isn't empty, it contains 7 files, each at least 14 MB in size. But DF says that that directory file is zero bytes in length. See attachment.

  6. @Alan_B: Nope. The point that needs to get across is that this DF error occurs on a FAT32 drive/card. I agree that defragging a SD card or a SSD (sharply) reduces the lifespan of such a device. But I didn't touch that discussion at all in my first post. That's why I am so baffled by the Keatah's "rant".

  7. I hope this bug hasn't been reported before.

About once every month I defragment my 4 GB SD card (FAT 32). Windows tags this SD card as the F: drive. It works fine except for one thing. DF noticed that a directory file was fragmented. So, i ordered DF to defragment that file directory (multiple times) but to no avail. See attachment.

Another thing that stands out. When I look at my C: drive then all fragmented file directories are NEVER zero bytes in length. But DF assumes that the file directory is zero bytes in length. Odd. Then it's no surprise that DF can't defragment the file directory.

  8. I tried a number of things but to no avail. Seems it´s the result of a combination of a number of programs. I moved the task bar to the 4 places the taskbar can be placed but the problem remains. From time to time the DF icon does show up but I can't discover any pattern in that (irregular) behaviour.

I would say that when I open an application, in >97% of the cases the appropriate icon shows up on the taskbar.

Even the icons in the system tray show don't always show up when I change the position of the task bar. It takes some time for these icon to show up again or don't show up at all. It seems the Win 7 program code is still somewhat "buggy".

As mentioned before, contrary to DF's icon, CC's icon always shows up on the taskbar. It seems the CC programcode is MUCH better than DF's programcode, in this regard. Work for Piriform's developers !!!!

Not only the Snipping tool and "CMD.exe", but also CLEANMEM "doesn't" like the taskbar being on the left hand side of the screen.

  9. @mta: some programs don't take into account that the taskbar can be located vertically on the left hand side of the screen. Like the windows snipping tool and "CMD.exe".

  10. This is something that has been bugging me for a long time (about a year). Recently, I installed the latest version of Defraggler (v2.14). The first time (first few times ???) I used/opened any DF version a task bar button with the DF icon showed up. But after a while, when I (re-)open DF again then a task bar button shows up but the DF icon isn't displayed on that button. I don't what to make of it. Because it never happens when I open CCleaner !!! (See attachment)

Does, in this regard, DF uses (slightly) different program code than CC ??? Are the icons in DF stored in a different place than in CC ? (Work for the Piriform developers ??????)

On the other hand it occurs as well when I open e.g. "Windows Repair v1.9.14" (New version available at www.Tweaking.com) for the 4th (??), 5th (??), 6th (??) time in a row. This odd behaviour suggests that it's Win 7 related.

I tried to resolve this issue by cleaning the windows Icon cache with CC, but to no avail.

There could be another explanation: as far as I can tell, Win 7 doesn't seem to like the fact that my Task Bar is located vertically on the left hand side of my computer screen. At least three programs (in Win 7) fail to recognize the fact that the Task Bar is located in that spot of the screen.

Again: Is this DF related or Win 7 related ? Do other Win 7 (Win 8 ???) users share the same experience ?

    - Don't write off Win 7 too early. Putting more emphasis on Win 7 would certainly be positive for MS' reputation.

    - The GUI of Win 8 has scared (off) a lot of users (me included). Too many GUI changes. For A LOT OF folks a computer is an instrument to work with, not a gadget with a flashy GUI. "Keep It Simple, Stupid".

    - Windows dead ? Issuing Win 8 certainly wasn't positive for the "life expectency" of Windows in general.

    - Too early too declare Windows dead, IMO.

  12. @DennisD: And how many times did you swap/upgrade parts in your desktop ? I also had a desktop, but I added/upgraded parts only once or twice. And on my previous laptop I only added extra memory. And I used that laptop from 2004 to 2012.

If there was a powerful "tablet" with a big screen, where I could plug in the usual things (CD burner, mouse, keyboard, SD cards, etc.) then I certainly would be interested. Then I would start to consider to move to such a computer. But currently I am very satisfied with my Win 7 laptop.

  13. Perhaps I'll switch to Win 8 one day, perhaps I'll just go "Tablet".

A tablet is a logical next step in the evolution of computing. First we had a desktop and towers with a separate monitor, then we saw the birth of the laptop with a LCD or LED screen. And now the computer electronics are "hiding" under the screen. And we call that a "tablet".
