Welcome to the CCleaner Forums.
For a fix for this issue I would uninstall and reinstall CCleaner and see if Opera is still listed. The program has an .INI you can save by checking the box in the settings to save your settings. I looked at mine and the Opera settings are NOT saved there but in an internal list of settings somewhere.
It is entirely possible that someone else here will be along soon to provide extra information. So if reinstalling clears the Opera listings or not please post back here.

I rebuilt my system a couple of weeks ago - 15 Aug 2009 - Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003. I also have Norton (newer version) and AdAware.
I had been using CCleaner on the previous system and was pleased, so I installed CCleaner again.
While online I get a great deal of CcSvcHost alerts trying to execute instruction 0xxxxxxx at location 0000000. It's always location zero. The alert is posted by Symantic.
I uninstalled Ccleaner and have not had any more problems. I suppose each time I want to run Ccleaner, I will install, run and uninstall it.
Is there an incompatiblity between Norton and Ccleaner?

I just tried to send this message to Ccleaner using their form. It was intercepted with a cryptic error message and was not transmitted.
Let me welcome you here. This is a pretty good and responsive board and the members here will often bend over backwards to try to help you.
That being said, I don't have anything kind to say about Norton, other than to suggest several other antivirus programs such as NOD32 (paid) or AVG (free version), so I won't go into that because I don't let my clients use it.
I will however suggest that rather than installing and uninstalling CCleaner on your system you might try the portable version if you are sticking with the Norton and someone else doesn't have a solution for you.
I know this is only a workaround but if you give a little time someone else will probably be by in a while to try to find the solution to your problem.

Any news? I too have looked to see if he has posted anything new and finally did a search and found this thread to find out if anyone knew anything about him.
Are any of the board op's able to see his regular email address and send him a note? I can't remember is sending an email here automatically notifies a user at their regular email or not.
I too would like to know if he is OK. He even came looking for me at one time to see where I had been, just busy with work fortunately.

First, Welcome!
Second, your translation seems fine. I had to look up "meddelandet" which is "message" in English. Next time you might try posting in English and your native language (Swedish from what I can guess from a Google search). This is a very friendly forum and there are many people from around the world who help here.
Third, have you updated your video driver to the latest nVidia driver lately? I looked up your error messages and most of the searches point to a driver issue. So you might try getting the latest one and see if your issue is resolved.
Fourth, do you have the check box for "Windows Log Files" under the "Windows" tab checked? If you do, try deselecting it and see if this solves your issue.
Please let us know if either of these suggestions work and what you did, so we can help others in the future. And if these did not help it will help us rule these out.

When running CC, I find that letters I have typed in the Open Office suite are erased - how do I run CC without this ocurring?

Have you looked at the actual file location or are you talking about the "Recent Documents" in the OpenOffice.org program itself?

Specifically the Microsoft Office icons disappear from my start menu and desktop shortcuts. As an example, instead of seeing the excell, word, and powerpoint icons I see little blue boxes. This has happened with other software links as well. I have noticed this constant bug with several versions on ccleaner and every machine I have ever used it on. Is there a way to get these icons back? Trying to do it by clicking on 'properties, advanced, change icon' does not work as the option is greyed out. I believe this is a bug with all versions of the software because it happens on every machine I have ever tried it on.
Also, is there a way to prevent ccleaner from removing icons when it is being run for the first time?
It sounds to me as if you are checking every box in CCleaner. Those boxes let you keep what you want.

When I try uninstall CCleaner I get NSIS error message: "Error launching installer". Running Vista Home Premium SP2.
The quickest thing to try, is to install the same thing again and then try to uninstall again.

Thank you so much for writing back. I got home from work late and had to walk our 3 dogs, and I have no great love for Norton, so it can go. It's funny that you said something about the latest version of CCleaner, I had just done the update before I ran the registry checker. Norton is no longer having a problem, but my computer just isn't running right. I will do a back up and clean install, but I have a question. A year or so ago I had some malware and when I finally got rid of it, it took with it some of the components to different things on the pc that I would like back, such as the fax monitor on my windows fax, and my networking sector is missing some stuff, to name a couple. The last time I did a back up I used Nero and sent everything to an external hard drive. When I installed everything back, I installed the messed up items along with what I wanted. Maybe I don't really understand how to back up just the programs that I want. I also lost all my email from Outlook 2007, I don't want that to happen again because I store important veterinary correspondence there. I know you all are busy solving problems, but could you recommend a good informative site to tell me how to back up, so that I don't create a nightmare for myself? There must be a file somewhere with all the EULA agreements in it because I lost a lot of software that I had to dig out and redo, but the worst part of that was losing what I had stored in particular programs, for instance, all my recent papers done for my second trip back through college. Thank you again for your time and help.

I don't mind helping when I can, and I also do this as a job so I have set up a ton of links on my site just for this stuff, like direct links for the service packs to knock out the updates faster. I will probably create a new page with the info below and possibly more detail later, but for now if you have any more questions, post back here. And if you really get in trouble, my phone and email are listed on my site. The links from my site mostly point to MajorGeeks.com and CNet / Download.com, with a few others, and some of the files I host myself.
For the backups I LOVE a little program called Cobian Backup. This is an excellent full featured backup program and it is FREE.
By default Cobian Backup is set to NOT compress anything. Meaning that you can simply browse through the files you backed up (but you can use compression if you have to). There are a few settings I change in the Options in Cobian Backup - Under "Visuals" check the boxes for "Show percent in the progress bars" and probably the "Show grid" and Un-check the "Show welcome screen". Under "Functionality" Un-check" the "Confirm running tasks manually". Under "Engine" you may want the "Use several methods for copy" - I would NOT use the "Copy NTFS permissions" to avoid any password or permission problems when you go to copy your data back. For the initial "Full" backup when you are creating a new task, Un-check the "Create separated backups using timestamps", but once you are back up with your clean install you may well want to use this and have multiple full copies of your data.
Now on to the backup(s). I am going to base this as if you have plenty of space and that you do not have any malware on your system now. I will try to give the same info for both XP or Vista. Very few programs can just simply be transferred so those will have to be reinstalled separately, and you will want to make note of any serial numbers you need and settings you have changed, for example your email.
1. Backup the entire Documents and Settings for XP and Users for Vista - I always get this and not just the current user files just in case. This will get all of your documents, downloads, music etc.. Also your Outlook .pst file(s), Firefox profiles, and many other settings.
2. You may have some programs that have saved data in their own program folders instead of a folder or file in the "My Documents" or "Users" folders. You will have to determine where the data lives. Just to be on the safe side I would backup the program folders of anything to do with money such as TaxCut, Turbo Tax, Money, or Quicken, and any of the family tree type of programs. All of these programs, if they are current versions, save their data the "right" way but if you are using an old enough version or have upgraded for years, Quicken is one that may have saved the data in the program folder. If you have the space you can simply back it all up, and sort it out later.
3. Any folders or files you may have saved in "C:" or whatever root directory Windows is installed on.
4. Use a free program called Double Driver to backup the drivers you are using now. This is not a fool-proof way to get your hardware working again after the clean install, but it will probably get most of what you want.
5. Use Belarc Advisor to get a lot of the info about your system and print it out. This will get you a lot of your serial numbers and info about your hardware.
When backing up using Cobian Backup, you will see the log file having some errors about not being able to backup some files. There are going to be some that are "in use" and not able to backup, but I have not seen any that were needed later. Usually they are files like NTUser.dat and other NT files. These are reinstalled by default by Windows. You will want to scan the logs to double check to see if there is anything that would not copy and that you really do want. If there are some, make sure you do not have them open, in fact make sure you have as few items open as possible.

If you get the option, I usually recommend creating multiple partitions or using multiple hard drives. This way you can install Windows on the first partition and then put your data on the second. Once you get Windows installed you can right click on "My Computer" choose properties and then "move" your "My Documents" to the other location. I do NOT recommend moving the location to an external hard drive, because if that drive loses power Windows will freak out (I know that's kinda technical...). The reason for installing this way, is that if Windows gets messed up, you can reinstall without having to do anything with your data since it is not in the same partition.

Hello. I used CC to check my registry for errors yesterday. I clicked fix all the errors it found. I did the back up, saved in my documents. I had major problems after cleaning the registry, couldn't even boot up, Norton Internet Security became invalid, unable to use system restore, many other problems. I tried to restore the back up, got the file from your site to allow extension to be recognized in XP, and when I went to import the saved reg. file to the registry, here is what I got:
C:\\ all the stuff for file placement\CC_Registry_backup\cc_20090512_081006.reg:Not all data was successfully written to the registry-some keys are open by the system or other processes. I desperately need help, my computer is now having one error after another, still cannot get NIS to open when I restart my computer, last known configuration doesn't work, was able to do system restore, but it took about 30 tries and a lot of time, and going through safe mode to do so, and I lost a lot of stuff from my computer that shouldn't have changed by doing a restore. I don't know what to do, will someone please help me? Thank you for your time.

My first suggestion would be to remove the Norton, I am biased against Norton as I used to work for a shop that sold it and it was a piece of junk with many complaints. That being said, even if I thought it was a good product, I would still say the same thing. If you are able to use the Windows or CCleaner utility to start the Norton uninstaller then try using that and reboot then use the Norton removal tool - Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) 2009.0.5.26 which you can find the latest version at MajorGeeks.com http://majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html to clean up most of the rest of the stuff left behind that the uninstaller leaves behind. That should leave you with your system clean enough to install another antivirus like AVG Free or AVAST if you want a good FREE antivirus, or get NOD32 from ESET if you want the best AV.
I am not one of the folks who write code for CCleaner, and I do love this utility, but the latest version has had some issues(my money is still on Norton screwing something up). If your system is still having problems after you have removed the Norton, then unfortunately, I would suggest that you back up your data and reload from scratch so you have a clean system, this is not a bad idea every so often anyway. Then when you reload CCleaner go back to version 2.17, skip the 2.19 version, and wait until a version 2.20 comes out.
As for the NIS (Norton Internet Security), good surfing habits and a router, are much better protection than NIS. Once you have taken some action, would you please let us know the outcome? This is a very good forum and even if I can not find your solution there is a good chance someone else can.

I have not done the update for CCleaner to the new version yet, but what you are describing sounds like you are not deleting the index.dat file(s) in the IE settings in CCleaner.

My first thought is that Dr.Watson was already running in the background. Did you open the task manager to see? If it was in use then CCleaner might not be able to delete it.

You can also use the scheduler built in to Cobian Backup(create a dummy task) to schedule a time to do this (I use it all the time). However I would suggest that you look at your power settings, especially the "close lid" settings. Many laptops are set to automatically go to sleep or hibernate when you close the lid. That may be the error you are getting when you

I am using IE7 Maybe IE7 isnt compatable with ccleaner?
I am positive it's a ccleaner problem because GOOGLE's PREFERENCES change back to default only AFTER I run ccleaner.
To be even more specific Google sets a cookie:
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Cookies\user@google[3].txt but some reason ccleaner does not recognize it in OPTIONS, COOKIES, COOKIES TO DELETE (From there you can choose to KEEP the Cookie).
I think it doesnt recognize the cookie because google changes it sometimes to user@google[2].txt or google[3].txt so how can we set an exemption for this? I see where to change the ini file or registry for cookies exemptions, but can I use wildcards in there: i.e.: user@google[*].txt ??
I do see the cookie however in the CLEANER screen.
I set the SHOW DETAILED log file for IE BUT I cant find where the file is actually saved on my hard drive?????
I found my answer in a post on a Mozilla help site, which I'll quote below.* I do think it is possible that these issues were caused by CCleaner, however I was not able to reproduce them. While I was trying to diagnose what had gone wrong and how to fix my issue, I tried uninstalling .17 and using .16 of CCleaner, cleaning out all my cookies (I really hated to do that one since I have so many sites that I log into and have them set, just so.), and going through the Firefox config and manually comparing it to another machine that did not have my issue. Then I hit Google in earnest and found a fix for my issue.

Ross, those sites will store details in cookies.
A likely cause is the file that stores cookies may be corrupt. To test this close Firefox, go to your profile folder and rename cookies.sqlite to cookies.tmp
Restart Firefox, log into those sites and then see if it remembers the logins.
To find the cookies.sqlite file, on Windows Vista the usual location for the profile folder is:
C:\Users\<Windows login/user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\
xxxxxxxx is a string of random characters, the second half of that part of the folder name is normally .default but may be something else.
The Application Data folder is usually a hidden folder. To show hidden folders, open Windows Explorer and choose Organize > Folder and Search Options > Folder Options > View and select Show hidden files and folders

And just for the XP users the profile is in - X:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\RANDOM NUMBER STRING.default - where X= the drive or partition Windows is installed on, usually the "C" drive.

GOOGLE has an option to set it to default search for 100 entries per page..plusother settings as well.
All these settings are stored in a cookie. I usually had GOOGLE's cookies set under ccleaner;s OPTIONS, COOKIES, Cookines to keep.
But now it doesnt work anymore.
I found GOOGLE sets a cookie C:\Documents and Settings\user\Cookies\user@google[3].txt 337 bytes
BUT this cookie doesnt even show in the COOKIES TO DELETE section so I cant set it under COOKIES TO KEEP.
It does show in the main ccleaner window if I set CCLEANER to delete all cookies.
Can this be fixed???

I am having a similar issue but I do not think that is a CCleaner problem. Or at least if it is, it is in conjunction with the new Google Toolbar and, or the new version of Firefox. When I open IE 7, it goes to my regular start page with my Google logged in and the preferences are correct. I also use similar options with 100 results and no filtering. For me, only Firefox is having the issue of not saving the cookies. In my case I also have the issue with my.yahoo.com, gmail, facebook, friendfeed and a couple other sites but not all. I'm still working my way through all of the possible add-ons and and removing the cookies and starting from scratch.

Joliet, and anybody else experiencing this same issue, you might go into the options for CCleaner and turn on the "Show detailed log of..." for both Internet Explorer and Firefox/Mozilla temporary files. If you remember, I did not, copy the results and save them (right click in the results) somewhere so they could be posted if needed.
I am still working on this. This is a very active and knowledgeable board, so it is possible that someone else will be able to give is the fix. If a fix is found please post it here and I will do the same if I find one.

EDIT: It's not set to work offline, they still don't work when connected to AOL and the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled already.

You can also check your "hosts" files to see if you are being blocked that way. Open Spybot Search and Destroy and change to the "Advanced View", if you have not done so already, then go to the "Tools" and then the "Host File". Once there remove everything and then click the button "Add Spybot-S&D host list". If you are already using another anti-spyware program like SpySweeper (my favorite, but it is not free), Super AntiSpyware, or Spyware Doctor, you may want to look at them as well for your hosts file and the links they protect against.
That should do it for you if these are the issues.
Update - I checked this stuff out for the "Hosts file"
In SpySweeper it is in the Shields list under Network.
In Super AntiSpyware it is in there is currently (2009.02.04) no setting for this.
In Spyware Doctor it is in IntelliGuard > Network Guard
In Spyware Blaster there is a "Hosts Safe" but this feature will only backup what you have. I like and recommend Spyware Blaster but I do not use the "Hosts Safe" feature since I do use SpySweeper.
In SuperAntiSpyware in the Repairs tab of the Preferences you can scroll down to "Repair broken Network Connection (WinSock LSP Chain)" and try that to repair the WinSock. I don't know if this method is as effective as the method I described before but it might be easier to try.
Please reply here if this works or does not work either way.

I always use the "overwite once" (or whatever overwriting a single time is called in the english language file) option.
Sorry I have not been back in a few days, I have searched and searched and can not find an answer to this one. Have you tried using any of the other methods to see if there is a change. I know it will take a bit longer, but just for testing purposes it might be helpful. After that, we will have to defer to the boards team to see if anyone else has a solution.

Yes, that's what I meant.
Although secure deletion "destroys" the files (as far as I can tell), renaming shredded video files in the recycle bin (only videos?) doesn't always work perfectly, i.e. renaming is incomplete.

And just to be 100% clear, which method for the secure deletion in CCleaner are you using? I don't know that I'll be able to find the right answer, but it will help the other members and the folks that write CCleaner to know what is being missed.

i think that the user means that CC secure deletion of the recycler contents doesn't rename all of the files, not that he or she wants to rename them whilst they're in the recycler.
I don't know what actions CC takes when it securely deletes the recycler contents (and I don't think that Piriform are going to tell me), whether it can access and modify the recycler contents directly, or whether it has to do something entirely more messy. How does it manipulate Info2? A puzzle indeed.
From the Changing CCleaner Settings page info about the method(s). I hope you are right about the OP and the renaming thing, but that is why I asked to get a little more info so we can be clear on this situation.
To change CCleaner's deletion method:1. In CCleaner, click the Options icon at left, and then click the Settings button.
2. Do one of the following:
* Select Normal file deletion (Faster) to delete files more quickly, but less securely.
* Select Secure file deletion (Slower) to delete files more securely, but much more slowly.
CCleaner has four methods of secure deletion: a Simple Overwrite (1 pass), DOD 5220.22-M (3 passes), NSA (7 passes), and Gutmann (35 passes). A 'pass' refers to how many times CCleaner writes over the spot on the hard drive. The more times CCleaner writes to that spot, the harder the file will be to recover by any means. The drawback is that it will take CCleaner longer to complete the job.

sorry 'bout that, I don't know why it was wrong, it was using upper case "CC" in the ccleaner names. -
Renaming of video files in the recycle bin doesn't (always?) work properly. Normally renamed files should look something like "zzzz.zzz", but that's not the case for video files (I have noticed this many times).
At the moment DataRecovery can see these file names (these are not the original names):
Dc26.avi
Dc25.wmv
Dc77.flv
There were many more video files in the recycle bin. That means renaming videos works correctly, but not always.

Several questions come to mind.
First is why? As in, why would you bother to rename a file you are getting rid of anyway?
Next, are you using the recycle bin for a storage folder?
Finally do you know that CCleaner can do secure deletion? The first link below will show you a couple of screen shots for the settings to change. The second picture will show the choices of how many times to overwrite a file.

Has anyone had this happen? I attempted to upgrade my CC Cleaner to the latest version and the exe file starts and immediately disappears. I am unable to open or uninstall cc cleaner now--it starts and immediately flashes out. I am not able to uninstall it in safe mode as I cannot enter safe mode due to the fact the person that set up the computer did not give us the password to allow us to do so--and he is no longer available to us. I ran into the same problem attempting to repair the drive with a W2K boot disk--password protected--unknown password to us.
Besides just deleting the files which will not uninstall the program from my hard drive what can I do??

This sounds very much like you are on a computer that is part of a "Domain" and you are prevented from installing. Is this computer at work, and do you have access to the computer that you might call "the server" which would possibly be what is the Domain Controller?
On a Windows 2000 machine that is locked down and you don't have the password this will take some work to "crack" the password and then make any changes. Before you do any of this, you'll want to back up any data that is important to you. You want to do the back up first because the chance is good that if you change your log-in, and you are on a domain, then you could loose whatever data was associated with that log-in.
I'm not real great at domains but will try to help if this is your case, and I know that the members of this board are very good and I'm sure that you'll be given a solution if possible.

I know Windows 7 Beta released officially yesterday to 2.5 million, I'm one of them.
I installed latest version of CCleaner today after installing W7 (64 bit) Beta today.
It seems CCleaner doesn't work at all, the actual functions do nothing basically.
Exampmle:
- fix registry, always shows up 148 problems after fixing all if I rescan.
- settings area, choose to show option to run and open CCleaner in recycle bin, it never saves the options
Cleaning cache (run CCleaner main feature) seems to work otherwise
I haven't been in the boards in a while, so first let me say howdy to all the regulars. This post really caught my eye. "theunseen" I'm not trying to be mean, but ARE YOU KIDDING? First CCleaner doesn't, and really couldn't, support beta software, especially if it only came out one day ago. Also do you really think it's smart to run any utility on the registry of the OS that just came out? If you are going to do that, I would back up the whole registry, not just the removed items like CCleaner does. Windows 7 is bound to go through quite a few changes before it comes out as a fully functional OS, so I would take a lot of care fooling with it.
Now all that said, I've not seen too many programs that tried so hard to take care of so many different OS's and programs to clean as CCleaner. I wouldn't be too surprised to see that the folks that do the code for CCleaner actually do have a version that works with Windows 7, but I won't hold my breath.
My suggestion would be to just do the cleaning for all the temp files and keep an eye on the change log for CCleaner and see if they start supporting Windows 7 sometime in the near future.

About a week ago, I ran CCleaner and it's built in registry cleaner. Shortly after 60 IE browsers popped up with "www.aol.com/redirect/..." It would display a single small AIM ad in the top left.
I ran a hand full of anti viruses, spyware, adware scanners, etc... but everything came up clean. The best part is, is when these pop ups came... it would lock up your computer so you couldn't track down where they were coming from which made it sound even more like a virus. From another computer I changed all of my pw's and called to cancel my credit card and get a new one.
I then backed up my computer and reformatted. Everything has been smooth until I decided to download CCleaner again since it (used to be) a great app. About 10 seconds later... BAM! 60 IE browsers.
I decided to do a system restore in hopes that it would roll back completely and not keep the changes made to the directory and all that jazz. We will see in the next day or so if the IE's flood again.
OS: Windows XP SP2
This could be real trouble. So, several questions.
01 Where did you download from?
02 Is Firefox your default browser?
03 Have you installed AIM?
04 What did you backup before you formatted?
05 How did you restore your backups?
06 What anti-spyware programs are you using?

I also get an error message saying ' your computer has lost the lease to its IP address 192.xxx.xxx.xx on the network card with network address 000EBF49A69' in the events log

My feeling is still the same, as I've seen this sort of situation many times. The symptoms you're describing, like system restore being turned off, sound very familiar. I wouldn't recommend doing a restore anyway. Restoring back bad registry entries won't do you much good. Please let us know what you situation is.

I cleaned my comp on my computer which has XP after I rebooted I lost my internet connection. I have a virgin media broadband cable modem, the ready light just flashes and a pop up on m screen says 'limited connectivity'. Please can you help I ma 99% sure it was due to the CCleaner, I opetd to save my registry before doing it. How do I correct problem eg restore registry I do not know how to get my internet connection back, please help as I may get charged for an engineer call out if my modem is not at fault.t
The reason you probably lost your connectivity is because of spyware that was cleaned by CCleaner and those files "broke" your connection. To get you back online we'll check the modem first and then turn our attention to your connection.
To double check the connection of the modem, disconnect the modem from all of it's cables. Unscrew the cable from the modem itself, unplug the cat5 cable, and unplug the power wire. Wait about 30 seconds before plugging anything back in. Start with the cable, then the power wire. Check to see that the lights come on solid before plugging in the cat5.
Once that's done, and you've plugged in the cat5 cable, if you're still not connected without the dreaded "Limited Connectivity" go to the "Network Connections" folder or just right click on the little icons saying that you have limited connectivity and choose "Repair". This may take a little while to run. If you still don't get connected. Then you will need to run "WinSock Fix". This is done in safe mode. To get into safe mode, reboot the computer and as it's booting press the "F8" key and choose the "Safe mode with networking". Run "WinSock Fix", reboot the computer and you should be back online.
After that you need to run a good antispyware program such as the free Spyware Doctor that comes with the Google Pack, or Super AntiSpyware, or the paid version of SpySweeper(this link points to a page with a 50% discount found by doing a Google search for "spysweeper coupon code").

I can't remember for sure if this is one of the items that you have to reboot for, but have you tried running CCleaner and then rebooting to see if it is cleared out?
