Quite some time ago I had a diesel Ford Orion which turned heads when I was standing at traffic lights, but only because it sounded like a bag of hammers, and gave out pretty blue smoke from the exhaust when you tried to put your foot down. Modern diesels are a world away from that Orion in just about every way. In fact, the GT cars which are regularly winning races like the Le Mans 24 hours, are diesel.
