Powder_Skier
OS - Win 7 64bit, Defraggler v 2.06.328 (64 bit) My Problem: I have an external 1.4 TB hard drive that I use for backup. Used space - 1.0 TB, Unused space - 370.5 GB. In an effort to make it faster, I thought to defrag it using Defraggler vs as mentioned. In analyze mode it reported that the current state was 31% fragmentation. I started to defrag and it has been running now for about 5 hours and won't seem to go any further, saying that it has defraged 3%. I've paused defraggler. The problem is that, while I can open my external hard drive to view, and I can SEE all the folders and files, when I try to OPEN or look INSIDE the folders, the folders are either EMPTY or (if I click on anything to try to open a file, I get an error message saying the system cannot find thee file I'm trying to open. I am at a total loss as to what to do. I'm confident the data is still there, but I need to be able to access it. I don't know if I should stop the defrag scan and start over, or try to go in with a recovery program. Please help - I'm desperate!! EDIT: Figured it out, thanks. Powder_Skier
Hello again - re-visiting the scene of the "crime." A couple of things: Defraggler "hung up" at about 3%, don't have a fix for that. As far as getting my files to show up again, that was fairly easy. It seems that while in "defraggler mode," my computer was unable to see the files. As soon as I cancelled defragmenting with defraggler, the files showed up again (I had to re-boot). So the files were still there (thankfully), my computer just couldn't see them. However, I've decided to NOT try to defragment any more storage drives. login123
Hilarious. Glad you liked it, I was afraid it was a bit sarcastic. @ Powder_Skier: fwiw, I have a couple of big files on a partition here, like 10, 14 and 17 gb. When I defragged it the windows native defragger just seemed to freeze forever, but then it completed. I just thought it was to do with the size of the file it was moving. After the defrag was finished, did you notice any speed increase? That was the only reason I was trying to defrag my external HD, to make it faster retrieving data. Thanks! login123
... After the defrag was finished, did you notice any speed increase? ... Thanks! Difference in my C: drive operation is slight enough that it might be my imagination. That's just me ... Others may have different experiences. I have one application, a virtualizer program, that seems reluctant to start if the drive is fragmented. Again, that might be my imagination, something else may cause it.
