Laptop internet connection

My laptop is not working. When I plug in the internet cable, the network cable disconnected icon stays in the taskbar. This is the reason I posted it in the hardware section. I figured something must've gotten messed up inside.

Laptop is a Vaio PCG-8R7L.

Any help would be appreciated

Forgot to mention that wireless works.

1) Win2k or XP?

2) Has the ethernet always worked?

3) Is the onboard LAN still enabled in the BIOS?

4a) Is the ethernet card listed in Device Manager?

4b) Is the driver made by Microsoft? Realtek? Linksys? 3com?

5) If #1's answer is 'XP', try rolling back the driver, in case you got hit by a bad WindowsUpdate driver

4a) Yes

4b) Intel

5) Rolling back doesn't fix the problem

When I was looking through device manager I saw the wireless network card, and the ethernet card but there was also a third. 1394 net adapter. I noticed it has a Microsoft driver. The other 2 have Intel ones.

Thanks

Download this file and put it on a pen drive or burn to a CD:

ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-support/4275/eng/PRO2KXP.exe

Uninstall the current Intel PROSet drivers and all related utilities, if possible. Remove the card's entry in device manager. Install the PRO2KXP.exe, and see what happens :P
