  1. Well, see now, I have to defrag disks for other people at times. Which includes removing trash. Did you know that some people have computers that actually crashed because they ran OUT of free space? They never thought to clear the internet trash! I had one computer that had over 10 GB free space appear after running CCleaner to remove temp & other garbage. Some people never defrag their drives either, so do you know what its like to have drives with over 45,000 to over 100,000 + fragments? Anyway, so sometimes you can't always partition drives like that when it involves other people's things. Definitely, the parallel disk processor that allows simultaneous defrag of multiple drives would be much faster than serial. I have tried parallel, & that is the one thing I definitely wish Defraggler had. It is MUCH faster on my machine that way! Don't get me wrong, serial is ok, but it simply cannot touch the speed of parallel (Multiple drives defragged at the same time, not in sequence). I used both ways (with a different defragger) & parallel blows serial out of the water. No question which one wins. Parallel support, please! Thanks!
  2. Defraggler could add 1 thing that would make it much more useful. Defraggler is a fast program of itself, usually. But a problem that I have is when computers get laden down with malware, then they are already slow, & sometimes I have to leave a couple programs running overnight because of being late when I am called out to begin with. They really need to be defragged, & I run CCleaner before I do the defrag etc etc, but what would really help is: - Defraggler priority slider bar. Can change whether it is run in Low/Below Normal/Normal/Above Normal/High/Realtime priority. - Defraggler CPU affinity selector. Can change whether it is running on 1 CPU, 2, 3, 4, etc cores This may sound silly, but having multiple programs running can cause the drive to slow down as it tries to allocate resources to all 3 programs & CPU time to all of them as well. If there was just a way to set Defraggler to run on 1 CPU core & to run in Low priority, it would make things get done so much faster. Ideally, a user would be able to save those settings. But it would be optional. Some users may not want to save it, but for those who do, should have the option to run it portably like that. Being able to set Defraggler to use the least resources possible would mean that the other programs could work faster & then defraggler could simply be finishing up later & everything would be done when you got back. Of course, I thought of a way that they could add to Defraggler something that will let a user select programs that have to complete before Defraggler begins to run as well. User loads Defraggler, & it will sit & wait for certain programs to finish before it starts. But that might get tricky. So I think the best option would be to have a defraggler "slow downer" for computers where speed isn't needed at the moment. Thanks!
  3. CCleaner is great, but I have found that a lot of times people end up with tons of trash on left behind user directories that either got corrupted, or they just don't log into because it is C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService, or the NetworkService folders. Problem is, that sometimes the Local Settings folder that contains temp & temporary internet files folder can get full of internet trash. Thousands of items. Like, Content.IE folders. Can you add the option for CCleaner to scan for Content.IE folders to empty under Documents and Settings folder/*.* users? That way, hundreds, or even thousands of megs of trash can be erased that people did not even know was there. And it would be 100% safe & foolproof
  4. I will tell you what I think happened. I could be incorrect on this, but this is what I think. Anytime that Windows is running very, very, very slow, + you have programs that do not load on startup, it is almost always due to ONE or more of the following reasons: - Harddisk is full or nearly full - Harddisk has too many programs loading on startup, maxing out processor time or memory usage - Harddisk is failing or dying - Malware/Viruses have overcome your computer & thwart your ability to run things. Possible rootkit may be on your system. - Computer has had a number of software or hardware resets that set the harddisk back from DMA mode to PIO (very slow) mode. - Conflict of security programs or startup programs (IE, Norton + McAfee installed to the same drive with both set as your antivirus) - Files or registry have become corrupted over time (can also be caused by malware, uninstallers that delete shared folders from similar type programs, uninstallers that "overwrite" the system32 files with one of theirs, then delete it on uninstall, etc) - Windows updates. Over 6 to 9 months, hundreds or even thousands of updates can be downloaded to a PC. Much help as they are supposed to be, sometimes one will inadvertently install a corrupted or flaky drive that destabilizes a system, as well as slowing a system up over a period of time - PC/Laptop fans are clogged. CPU is overheating, OR the fan(s) on the powersupply & 3D card may be clogged with dust as well, preventing full operation under heavy stress or overload I would assume that you were infected with malware, but since I am not there to check your PC, I am not totally certain.
  5. That's why I always have that box unchecked. I don't want to try to run .EXE only to find out that it was wiped out because it was an "unused" file extension. Someone may have mentioned it before, but since this is directly related to the capability to run things, I do think this is the most dangerous part of CCleaner, & should therefore be taken totally out, or at least protect the most basic file extension (such as NEVER allow CCleaner to erase: .EXE, .Com, .Zip, .MSI, etc. Extentions that are naturally installed via windows could be in a protected list, such that once CCleaner found "ununsed" extensions, it would first compare them to a known good list to see if any were on there, & block those from being displayed!) I believe either solution would be great. I detest the thought of not being able to launch Explorer.EXE because CCleaner wiped that extension out (hey, unused, right?)
  6. Oh, I am just wondering, I am not really as interested in Gutmann. What I am really interested in, is if 1 time can be recovered, how safe is 3 passes? Should be pretty hard to recover, right?
  7. I assume this applies to even CCleaned drives, but google this & see what you think... The recovery of at least one or two layers of overwritten data isn't too hard to perform by reading the signal from the analog head electronics with a high-quality digital sampling oscilloscope, downloading the sampled waveform to a PC, and analysing it in software to recover the previously recorded signal. What the software does is generate an 'ideal' read signal and subtract it from what was actually read, leaving as the difference the remnant of the previous signal. - Dr Peter Gutmann PhD, University of Auckland So, yeah, more than 1 pass needed? If you want it securely gone!
  8. Help us out a little. What error message do you get when trying to run a restore? Thanks!
  9. I even thought about creating an SFX to use relative paths & overwrite the visible icon(s) with the same name invisible ones. Do hope they get this feature working in 7 though. Works so great in XP! If it can't work in 7, I rather CCleaner detect the OS it is on & disable the "includes" for Vista/7.
  10. Thanks, Alan. I never knew it worked with System Volume Information, although I am certainly aware of tricks like that. I myself have used it in situations such as when HostsMan wanted to complain that it did not have a couple of DLL files (trying to reduce what it could run with) but it would work if I created an empty notepad & name it exactly the names of the dll's it called for. Additionally, you can "cheat" on SFX packages that complain that you "must include at least 1 file in order to create an archive (so you can create an SFX from it)". Include a file, then when you create the SFX, use RAR to open & delete the file inside the SFX (handy if your only running a command). You can even create a 0 byte shortcut by right clicking the desktop on an empty area, choose "New Shortcut", then right click-drag on the shortcut & create a copy of it on another blank location on the desktop. Cancel the shortcut wizard, & voila! 0 bytes on the copy of the shortcut that you created before you cancelled! Alas, but this problem with CCleaner has me stumped! I have no use for the AVG desktop icon (I like my desktop clean, & besides, AVG works fine in the system tray). It is intermittent, but still very annoying when it happens. Besides, a shortcut named AVG 2011 on the desktop might well get confusing! Perhaps I can simply come up with a script to hide the desktop & start menu shortcuts? Although, I do not know how I would accomplish that yet. Sigh.... "Flips a few google pages".... Or, if someone else knew & wanted to help! Will be glad when this is "fixed" in Windows 7, cause I get tired of Windows either not accepting anything that is dragged to includes, or trying to include the path the shortcut refers to (instead of the shortcut itself). Wonder how many people actually end up deleting files instead of shortcuts because of not paying attention? * Wonders if this feature should be removed from 7 till it its debugged? Looking forward to all your replies. Thanks for your help, Nergal & Alan. We can come up with a solution together!
  11. Hope this will help, but it seems that it will not work whether UAC is enabled or disabled. I am not sure yet if this is specific to my Windows 7 or others, although I tried CCleaner on other machines & it still failed. For example: I can install AVG 2011 & AVG works good, but it installs an AVG shortcut to the start menu + desktop. For some reason, AVG includes some type of anti-change state with this version where some definition update & restart will re-enable the desktop shortcut + the start menu shortcut. So yes, Alan, this one does come back from the dead just like a zombie. I know this is AVG because it does the same in XP or 7 & I do not have a steady state program to revert the PC on any of them at the moment. When I try to drag the AVG desktop shortcut to CCleaner includes, it simply acts as though I never dragged a file up there when I release my mouse. In XP, however, this works great! If I browse to the desktop shortcut in 7 (to try to include it anyway), it wants to "include" the AVG program file location (instead of only the shortcut I browsed to). I do not wish to delete AVG itself, so I delete the "includes" entry back out. I have no idea why 7 would do this. I know 7 is different, but, a shortcut is a shortcut, right? Hope this helps! If you need more info, just let me know! P.S. If you want to see how this works, try downloading & using AVG free (but be sure to remove the other Antivirus first). I am sure you must have a test machine there, so if you have any problems or questions, I will be only too happy to let you know more. Thank you for your assistance. I am really impressed by the work you guys do! I try to recommend CCleaner & Defraggler to a lot of people who otherwise wouldn't know about it. Thanks man!
  12. I invite other people's input here, but I use Windows 7, Vista, & XP & I have never had a problem with system restore & CCleaner. Others may have had problems, so I invite their input.

    Runtime Error

Just how big was your file? They have services that offer free 1 GB uploads
  14. Yes, but I have seen the reverse take effect too. Sometimes running a hotfix uninstaller will revert files, remove files or change settings in such a way that Windows actually either destabilizes, or crashes. Be very careful when/IF deciding to remove hot fixes. Many times, they are multi-dependent, meaning they are layered on other hotfixes & or services & cause untold headaches upon removal. It is true that hotfixes can mess up your system, but it is also true due to the multi-dependent nature of the fixes (+ the fact that some of them alter so many registry keys & system files) that uninstalling them can trash your system as well. I would hazard the guess to be up to the user as to whether or not to remove them.
  15. What IDE/Sata controller? I use USB2 connectors a lot. Besides, if I defrag a drive on my systems, it rarely takes much mem or CPU time. I use a combination of SATA/PATA (IDE) USB 2, USB3, internal, external drives at times. Why not allow people like me to go ahead & take advantage of their Multi-CPU cores & finish faster? Other programs do finish faster & allow multi-drive processing parallel processing. Sequential takes soooooo long! Parallel definitely saves time!
  16. When you install CCleaner, it normally defaults to C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleaner.exe (But it allows you to install to another directory or drive if you wish). If you have this problem, you (or someone that uses your machine) probably set it up on a different path than the default. Windows remembers this the next time you try to update it with a new version. Suggested Fix: Simply direct CCleaner installer to the proper directory ---> C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleaner.exe OR.... Uninstall CCleaner & do a clean install Thanks!
  17. Augeas, that is a wonderful suggestion. But I feel that it may fall short in what he is suggesting. I feel there is a valid reason for him requesting that. What you suggested works great (provided you only have 5, 10, or even a few hundred maybe?) files to recover. But if you have a drive that crashed (it can happen!) because of a failing USB controller etc etc, & it corrupts the MFT file system such that the files are still present but inaccessible.... I have a 1 TB drive that has about 800 GB full. There are probably a few hundred thousand apps on it. It would be a living nightmare to try to peck away, or even to try to scroll & select such a large list. Having the option to click & select the Green/Orange/Red options would definitely save much time, frustration, & be much quicker! I will +1 to his suggestion. Not that yours is not a good one, but sometimes when you have a TON (literally) of files to sift through, you really DO need an auto some kind of something to help out! Thanks for listening, & that is just my $0.02 worth!
  18. CCleaner is really nice. But it has 2 tabs now. Applications & Windows. Under Windows, it has Internet Explorer, & under Applications, it has Firefox. I wonder how it would be like this? ---------> Applications | Internet | Windows (Applications - All 3rd party apps | Internet - All Web Browsers | Windows - All Windows related trash) I would really love to have an internet tab where all the web browsers are grouped together so I can clean all my internet trash at a glance. It is so confusing to switch to Windows for Internet Explorer options, then have to go back to Applications to see Firefox, then look further down buried in the list of applications to find Google Chrome, or other web browsers. If it had an internet tab, problem solved! All web browsers are together, & not on multiple tabs or buried under tons of other apps to search for. A lot of the time, users spend more time looking at the options for Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, etc. Why not just put all these together to eliminated wasted time? Let me know what you think!
  19. When a user creates includes on a computer, sometimes they make it portable & put it on a flash drive. Problem happens when they have it set for C:/Music to empty (just an example used here) & they run it portably on another drive. What happens next if the computer they are cleaning has the same directory as well? They get erased & someone is upset! What about the option under advanced settings to detect if CCleaner is being run in any place other than C:/Program Files/CCleaner, then it will automatically disable the includes & assume it is being run portably? This should just be an option, because some people might not want it, but for those who do, it can help prevent that they erase more than they want from other computer drives that just happen to have the same drive letter(s) & file(s)/folder(s)! What do you think? If you decide to do this, also don't forget to include the (86) program files directory as safe (for 64 bit windows) so that CCleaner will operate normally under 64 bit as well. Let me know what you think. I just thought this will add an extra layer of security, & with it being entirely optional for a user to check, so that users who want it can use it, while others who may not won't be forced to.
  20. Hello. There are 2 new things I discovered. I don't know if this has been covered yet or not, but it is very annoying. I know CCleaner has option to disable startup items, but what to do about these? I installed Google Chrome & it set the updater for a running task so it avoids regular startup! I also have problems with new programs on BHO. Any way to include a BHO + Tasks disabler? I checked, & BHO are always in the same location in the registry, while tasks are always in the same folder on the computer. I would love to be able to disable these with CCleaner, because it is so annoying to see these creep in. It already has startup, & BHO + Tasks are being more commonly used now as "startup" to try to get around that. Please help us! Thanks!
  21. Well, that is unfortunate! How do I make it work right then? Is there no way to make it work? P.S. What do you mean about inconsistency? Do you have an example? I am a little confused here.... There are other ways to delete the shortcuts that work every time, but I was just wondering why the problem with includes in 7? P.P.S. If I have certain shortcuts set on includes for XP, wonder if they will "work" in 7 when run from a flash drive?
  22. Have a problem here. CCleaner includes works on XP PRO SP2 (32 Bit). CCleaner includes fails on 7 (32 Bit). I am not sure if this also applies to Vista, but attempt to drag shortcut on desktop to includes fails in Windows 7. Attempt to add shortcut on desktop via CCleaner browse method results in the file linked to the shortcut (not the shortcut though) being added. Why is this?
  23. It seems to work on my XP Pro SP2 system. How old is your Vista install? Are you sure it is healthy/malware free? Just wanted to see before they proceed to the next step. Embedded rootkits can cause exceptions from time to time if they are present on a system, when certain functions are taking place. You may have a healthy system, just asking, however, to be on the safe side first.
  24. I tried with 1, I tried with 3, & the result would be the same. It would work fine & start immediately upon doing just an Erase free space, even though it was already freshly formatted via windows format in NTFS format. When I would try the Erase Entire drive, I noted that it would take a loooooong time to begin erasing the space. Puzzling to me!
  25. CCleaner wipe utility is nice, but sometimes you get doing other things & forget if you selected 1 pass, or 3, or if you selected only free space, or entire drive. Wouldn't it be nice if CCleaner always showed during the erase process, a panel that showed what you selected? Example: User selected Erase: Entire Drive # passes: 3 I myself would love to be able to instantly glance & see what I selected. Sometimes I get very busy, & by the time CCleaner is nearly done, whoa, what did I select in the first place? CCleaner doesn't show it once it begins! Well, ok, it does show the wipe free space, I think, but what about the # of passes? Isn't that important too?
