I have tried Remove Empty Directories and it works quite well:
http://www.jonasjohn.de/lab/red.htm
It somehow knows which empty Folders should not be deleted.
Glary Utilities also has an empty folder finder and deletes them if you want. I never do it though.

Norton. I still believe in paying software. LOL
But everything else is free.
AJ
No problem with paying for software but Norton you couldn't pay me to use.
AntiVir on most machines and Avast on another. I much prefer AntiVir though.

That is interesting, thank you. I had a dabble at this earlier, but will spend a little time later, I think it is the expression ' if you put them in the right folder' I need to look at and understand what it means.

When you install the Portable Apps Start Menu on your thumb drive several files and folders are part of the install. One of the folders is called "PortableApps". That is the one to put your apps in so they show up on the start menu.

I have become increasingly impressed with this developing area of technology, there are several manufacturers supporting it e.g. Sandisk with their U3 application, others use portable apps (www.portableapps.com).
For me the attraction is all my software available in a form I want with the settings I prefer on a usb stick which I simply plug in to a host computer with an Internet connection (hopefully). It has major advantages for troubleshooting too with your own tools available and hopefully virus free.
I hope piriform will make their applications available in this form really soon - they can be used off the stick, but to have them as a menu item would be great.
I see potential in both the home and business world for this to develop where the user has a stick - especially as the prices drop 2gb for a fiver, and has little or no software on a machine, only data. The potential for on the fly encryption of this small area then becomes attractive and without performance penalties.
Regards
Anthony
Have you tried putting the portable versions of Piriform's programs in the Portable apps folder? Most portable programs show up on the Portable Apps Menu if you put them in the right folder.
Here is a shot of my USB Thumb drive using the Portable Apps Start Menu. As you can see from the pic CCleaner integrates perfectly with it. Most of the apps you see listed and many that are out of view are not in the official Portable Apps format. Many programs make portable versions and they will show up and work perfectly from the Portable Apps Start Menu. Just unzip them to the folder. U3 is a different thing though. The programs must be in U3 format to use them with the U3 Start Menu.

Hi Humpty,
I am a member of Malwarebytes.org so I logged in and applied the fix from their site.
I also tested what you uploaded for non-members of Malewarebytes.org at Rapid Share.
Downloaded it and extracted and executed and it works as well as far as I could tell.
My "SecurityProviders value" is no longer corrupted. So I could not actually apply the fix.
davey
I used the uploaded file from Humpty and it said the security provider WAS corrupted and I applied the fix and it worked. So the file works if you don't feel like registering at their forum.

What do they mean by "Your Security Providers value may have been corrupted"? What security provider are they referring to? My AV or what?

I still don't see why people are installing SP3 if you have a fully updated SP2. What exactly are you accomplishing? There is nothing significant in it other than an a accumulation of all the updates since XP was released. Great for reinstalls. No real reason to risk Billy butt jammer Gates completely screwing your computer if you have SP2 fully updated.

You think people would be used to Billy butt jammer and his mary band of f_ _ _ ing idiots messing up your systems. I dread patch Tuesday every month.

For reasons I won't bore you with I have had to put a new motherboard in my computer and reload windows so what I want to know is this, Can I download avast on my friend computer, save it to disk and the load it up and install it on my computer before going on line or is there something in the program (copy protection) that would prevent me from doing this..yes I know its free but I still need reassurance that I would have no problem in going down this path.
I Can't load it direct as I would be without any protection whilst I was downloading it.
Thanks for your help
Download the installer on your friends machine and put it on a USB thumbdrive. Copy the Avast installer to your machine and install as normal. Than update Avast and your good to go. You have I think 90 days to register and get your free key which is than good for over a year. This way you install Avast without having to go online to download the installer which you said you wanted to avoid doing.

If multiple tabs are opened then I think that each tab runs in it's own memory space so if one page crashes only that page will and not the others?
Open a couple of extra tabs and check in taskmanager.
Chrome has it's own Task Manager built in so you can see what each tab is using.
This speed test shows Chrome is much faster with Javascript than the other browsers. http://www.download.com/8301-2007_4-100308...tag=mncol;title

Why'd they call it Chrome? That's an all too obvious referral to Mozilla. Nobody at Mozilla's complaining? They can't think of a unique name? Weird.
They make no secret they borrowed heavily from Mozilla.
I think it's the most interesting new browser in a while. It's definitely different and has loads of potential.
-
Surprisingly its based on webkit(safari) and not firefox.
Its pretty useless feature wise but it seems fast. Its sort of like going back a step in functionality even from IE6. It has tabs but that doesn't make up for all the stuff it doesn't have.
It's too early to to know what it will include when it's done. It's also open source so there will be many addons I would imagine.
-
See if this link loads faster for you
Yeah thats better.
-
Ha Ha Google has a 38 page comic book outlining the features of it's new browser "Chrome". If they get a nice community of addon developers this will be very nice.
The page loads slow but it's there.

Pics have already leaked out before the official release. There was some video to but they killed those quick.

When the AntiVir "Guard" is active, what is the best option for files to be "Guarded:" "all files", "smart extensions" or the "extension list?"
The default setting is "Extension List" and thats where I left it and have no issues. "All Files" would slow you down.

Its probably going to be a rebranded firefox. They have been heavily involved with firefox from what I've read.
Do we really need another browser? I know I dont.
I like playing with browsers so I like to see a new one. Plus I like so many Google products, Gmail, Google Reader, Calendar, iGoolge, Google Tool Bar to name a few. They usually do something interesting so it will be fun to see what they come up with. They need to do something unique to set themselves apart from the other browsers out there. I won't be testing the beta but I look forward to some reviews and screen shots from those that do.

To actually answer the question that Anthony A asked, yes it is ok to install SP3 with a patched UXtheme in SP2 without uninstalling the old one, it will just be reset to the Windows standard, so you will need an SP3 version of the patch.
I posted about how to do this on my forum for newbies a while back, using the LE5 theme as an example.
You might have done this already by now Anthony, but it could help others anyway.
Thanks that what I wanted to know. I have not updated to SP3 as of yet and don't know when I will but want to patch the UXtheme on one of my SP2 machines and wasn't sure about what would happen when I finally did go to SP3. So just update to SP3 and than repatch UXethme again.
-
There have been rumors for a few years now of a Google Browser but they denied they were even considering one and now here it is. This is going to be interesting.
-
Could try this one Anthony for SP3, seems to appear as recommended on a few sites

Thanks I will check it out.

I have UXTheme Multi-Patcher (Neowin Edition) 4.0 on my SP2 and it works fine.
Hmmm, can that be the reason why i wasn't able to install SP3?? Although, i remember it was a registy related problem...
Thats what I need to know. If you have patched UXtheme in SP2 do you need to undo the patch before you install SP3 or what?
-
What is the best UXTheme Patcher out there? There are many but what one seems to be the least troublesome? This one works well with SP2 http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enh...e-Patcher.shtml but I don't see a version for SP3.
If you have patched the UXtheme file do you need to unpatch it to upgrade to SP3 or does SP3 install fine and undo the patch requiring you to repatch again?

i'm using FF3 and i like it so far. nothing bad over here. i use the all-in-one sidebar extension and it works well. IE7Pro is still awesome!
I find All In One Side Bar does not work as smoothly in FireFox 3. I set it to autohide so I just have to move the cursor to the side of the screen and the side bar opens but it's clunky with FF3.
