  1. As frustration sets in, I guess my question is, WHY are the items listed an issue???

I'm sorry if you're frustrated, I thought i explained it in my last post. Did you uninstall or change any Norton or Kaspersky apps? For example, sometimes the are references in the registry to shortcuts in the start menu that still exist even if the the program was uninstalled.

  2. There is a new release of the GUI for JK Defrag. Here is the link http://www.emro.nl/freeware

Since this does not require an "install" since you just unzip it to a folder how do you update to the new version from the older version? When I select update from within the older version it downloads the new zip. Am I supposed to delete the older version or just unzip the new one over the older one. 99% of my installed programs just update and do their thing these so called "no install" programs are a little different.

Does jkdefrag do boot time and pagefile defragmentation?

  3. CCleaner's registry cleaner is one of the safest on the market, so it would do no harm to clean those entries. If you want to be even safer, make a backup of what you cleaned since the program will offer it.

However, on Vista 64 bit, the issues cleaner "broke" my trackpad on my notebook. I just reinstalled the driver. So the "safe" rule applies to Windows 2000/XP, and probably Vista 32 bit.

  4. It's actually a Windows registry cleaner. The registry is where all the computer settings are stored. Over time, a registry can have erroneous data as programs are installed and uninstalled. CCleaner is one of probably 100 windows registry cleaners out there that delete those entries.

However, I read on the OptimizeXP website that even an extremely bloated registry with many erroneous entries has no real impact on performance.

But a registry defragment is supposed to improve performance. NTREGOPT is a good program for that.

  5. I am interested in experimenting with Linux. I have Windows XP, and I think that there is lots of room on my hard drive. However, I don't have a lot of computer savy.

As I understand it, I can download Ubuntu on my desk top.

My questions: If I do this,

    1. is there any danger of it messing up my PC, or should Linux just be loaded on a separate computer?

2 I have DSL, will Linux interfere at all with my internet service provider?

    Thanks.

Ubuntu Linux is a NIGHTMARE if you dual boot with Vista preinstalled. The partition resizer I found out was incompatible with the NTFS system and the new BOOT system.

Ubuntu is really clean and I feel like I'm on a Mac. I used it fine just like Windows. Firefox, Opera worked etc, Open Office is on it, has open source media players etc, and is much, much less bloated than Vista.

    However:

The Linux "community" has fanboys that used car salesmen would admire. They conveniently leave out the countless commands that users will eventually have to enter.

It is not as simple as Windows or OSX at all. You ever look in the forums....90% of all Windows/Mac users will be scared off by the crap some people go through in Linux. Not that it's bad...just we aren't used to working in a terminal ;) I am turned off by it now because it is still a flavor of Unix.

  6. I am having the registry cleaner problems in CCleaner, but I am in Vista. I ran the dial-a-fix in compatibility mode and repaired permissions but nothing happened.

I still haven't got any feedback on the bug where the program is removing my Synaptic trackpad entries.

  7. There was a forum that had directions to run CCleaner setup as administrator and then run the CCleaner.exe as administrator

to stop the unneccessary UAC control for that program, but it doesn't work. How can I turn of the nag screen specifically for a

    program? In this case CCleaner.

  8. I like the new MS Office 2007 to be honest, they improved the ease of use. While it may not be original (they use tabs - surprise!)

I think it has better functionality and features than Open Office 2.1. Does it warrant the high price? No, but there are clever ways outside of

pirating that are legal to using MS Office more cheaply. The better ones are educational discounts and using the student and teacher edition. The others

are quite obvious but involve MS's generosity with their evals ;)

  9. I use fasterfox, and that was the problem. More specifically, the Pipelining feature caused pages to hang in Vista, so I turned it off. I am just not sure why it would only happen in Vista. All the other optimizations are ok.

  10. I've seen some places say they should last 5 years I've seen others saying they should last 20. I think it just matters if you take care of it or not.(removing it properly ect)

Does removing properly mean clicking the "safely remove" button? Because I know that my Flash drive is configured for fast removal. I'm thinking it could also mean not removing the flash drive before all the data is written - but how would that damage the hardware?

  11. I got my new computer with Vista Ultimate - I am beginning to regret it now since it was installed as a 64 bit operating system.

Could I change it back to a 32 bit operating system? If not, I might save 136 bucks and go with Home Premium, but I have to return the damn pc.

HP didn't even tell me Vista Ultimate would be 64 bit. I checked the Home Premium PC's in the store and they were 32 bit.

32 bit apps works, except certain funky things happen, like right-click not working for ax-crypt.
