correct, but for me that's OK.
I actually don't want CC to ever update, and if I did, it's a manual download from the website of the portable version.
plus I only run my browsers in private mode so no cleaning on that front when they exit.
and if there was, I'd set their internal options to 'clean on exit' or get an add-on to do it for me.

  2. @Clean MisterB for me, with the whole trust thing blown to pieces and the balls-up of most of the year's releases, I'm not leaving v5.40 until it stops doing what I want and then I just solely use cleanmgr.

I recommend to all CC users to delete the ccupdate file and add firewall rules to block CC.
yep, you hinder auto updates but with Piriform's recent form, that's peanuts compared to what users got with auto updates.

     - they will still be accessing your data ?

that was never going to go away, just the way they tried to implement it in the pulled v5.45
they are collection 'anonymous' data, have done for ages.

    this from the v5.46 changelog

[tinfoilhat] that was from the v5.46 changelog, and was the same phrasing they used before when things turned ugly - so read into that whatever you like. [/tinfoilhat]

  5. g'day Stephen and welcome to the forum.

what is your OS and CC version?
where did you get CC from?

yes, almost all the versions of CC released this year have had their (fair) share of criticism.
the most recent release, v5.45 was pulled due to negative user feedback and v5.44 is the official 'latest' release.
although it has issues with the /auto switch and browser cleaning (or something like that), and v5.43 had Kaspersky and MalwareBytes problems (again - something like that) and v5.41 suddenly increased in file size without any new features announced and v5.42 I think was the European privacy settings which no one liked.

basically, v5.40 seems to be a version most seem to like the best (or hate the least - whichever way you want to spin it)
but no, CC isn't under attack (no need - Piriform are doing all the work in killing the product)

  6. no, CC is not malware.
but like all popular software, malware idiots like to use the name of common programs to disguise their wares.
make sure you download CC from the Piriform website.

that article your link refers to was from the security breach Piriform had 12 months ago.
    long since fixed.

  7. as to AVG or CC - they are different beasts covering different areas.

AVG is for virus protection, CC (in its purest form) is for removing junk.
AVG is pro-active, CC is re-active.
an anti-virus program forms part of your daily, layered, PC security.
CC is a monthly maintenance utility.

I've kept this 'high level' but with AVG/Avast/Piriform/CC all under the one company, I can't see an issue.

  8. in case you haven't already, try Revo to remove all traces.
has served me well over the years.
I lashed out and got the Pro (used to be the v2 Pro build but had to cough up for the v3 major build upgrade).
    currently on 50% discount sale.

  9. Try the SFC /scannow command first from an elevated command prompt.
    If that doesn't work,
    • go into regedit
    • go to this key: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and delete the entries for UpperLimits and LowerLimits
    • exit
    • reboot

When you restart the CD drive should be available - if not a repair install of the OS may be needed.
