  1. Thanks for the feedback!

TeeJay - I thought your link was at first broken, but then I Googled AIM Ad-Hack and found that your link was the main page. I then went to MajorGeeks.com and read about what the product was. Seems interesting, but it doesn't seem to work for the newest version..could be wrong there..but it seems like it is one of two version behind. I'll check later.

I'll probably update to it later on when it reminds me. I need a "cleaner feel" (pun intended :P ) and a new interface.

    Thanks again...

  2. I'm running an older version of AIM (Version 5.9.6089) and it has been bugging me to upgrade to 6.0. I read on another topic not to update to Triton because of it being a "bloated piece of crap" or something similar to that. However, my friend upgraded his, but I didn't get to use it for any measurable amount of time.

Question is: Do I upgrade? Is it worth it? I looked quickly on Google and saw that it was smaller and a "step in the right direction." So it seems to be the right thing to do.

    Any responses are appreciated.

    PS - Gaim still rockzorz!!

  3. I enjoy Nascar..watched the Daytona 500 and the Auto Club 500 - today is an off week, then they'll be at Las Vegas, with a completely modified track and infield area. My uncle got me to enjoys it, along with my neighbor. Favorite driver is Kyle Petty, that might change though - he used to be the 44 Hot Wheels car, and I really like him back when I was younger. Now, I don't know. I never liked Dale Earhardht, well his race tactics anyway (did not enjoy the fact that he died), but Junior seems to be a good guy.

  4. My dad brought home from work this older work station for me that they no longer used. It was made by Siemens/Fujifilm, because my dad works in a hospital, but they only used it for video capturing. Now, this thing is loud.

    Specs:

    Dual P3s/Xeons at 1ghz

    1GB RAM (2x 512MB PC100 DIMMS)

8 MB (!) POS Graphics card

    Plextor 40/12/40 CD Burner (SCSI)

Some standard black colored CD-ROM (SCSI)

Dual HDDs - SCSI (I believe they are 20 GBs each - when I still had Win XP Pro installed, it only saw them as one drive, but there are two separate HDDs-possibly one backing up the other)

    Some sound card

    Some power supply

    Two things about this system-

    1) IT IS LOUD!!! When it starts up....man you'd have to have a sound clip to understand- it whirs up real loud (like a jet engine!), then it comes back to a more reasonable level, but it isn't great. S

    2) It is extraordinarily slow.... I know it's no Core 2 Duo, but it is way slow. I blew off both HDD's with Active@ KillDisk, and tried Ubuntu, but it was realllyyyy slowwww. I don't know why. I know PC100 RAM is way old nowadays, but 1GB plus 2 processors should be decent. I have a P3 system with 384MB PC133 RAM and it's faster.... I just can't understand it. I was wondering if the BIOS were way off or something like that.

  5. Rridgely, if I could..I'd give you a hug right now!!! :P:D

LOL---I looked at the website earlier today, but then I changed the workgroup on my Windows 2K Pro machine, renamed it just to be sure, went back to the Dell, clicked set up local area connection...went through the steps, and BAM! It works!!! Took a little longer to get the printer set up, but I successfully printed a document from the Dell on to my older HP DeskJet 682C.

Now tomorrow's task, switch out my old printer to the Epson Ultra Hi-Definition R260 Photo Printer that I got for Christmas, and to figure out the easiest way to share documents.

It's 10:48 PM eastern time right now, and I started my network attempt at like 10:30. Done within, 5-8 minutes

  6. It's not really a forum rule, but each member is allotted only a certain amount of space to their account. Makes sense, or it would be like offering free and infinite online storage. That's why they do it...that and they can only have so much bandwidth available to them.

  8. Here's the thing, I have 2 computers, a Dell running Windows XP Home and a custom built (partially crappy machine) running Windows 2000 Pro. I thought I could network them, mainly to share files and share a printer. I have a Linksys Wireless G w/Speedbooster router, and I have both of them connected through that, sharing my cable internet connection.

I tried setting up a network starting with the Dell, and I went through all of the steps, but then when it said to insert the XP disc into the other computer, I tried that and it said that my OS (Win 2k Pro) couldn't be networked. This was a while ago, and I tried searching online, to know avail. If anyone knows how to do this, or has a site that would be helpful, it would be most appreciated.

    Thanks

  9. Your motherboard and processor are compatible, but unless I'm reading this wrong, your memory isn't.

    Official Intel Specs

They list other types, but not PC2-6400.

Four 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) sockets

    Support for DDR2 800, DDR2 667, or DDR2 533 MHz DIMMs

Support for up to 8 GB of system memory

Support for ECC and non-ECC memory

About your GFX card: I know that ATI makes the All-In-Wonder series, but NVIDIA's 8800 GTX is the most powerful card out there. Link 2 in SLI = amazing-ness. Just a little FYI.

EDIT- Your powersupply might be undersized. Not 100% sure on that.

  10. My other computer (Dell Dimension 8400) was from the Online Outlet. Bought a monitor (17" Ultrasharp) for about $1100 total.

    3.4 ghz P4

    512 mb RAM

    Radeon x300

    250 GB HDD

    DVD-ROM

Dual layer DVD Burner (NEC I believe)

    Win XP Home SP2

    Dell Preloaded programs

    Wireless Dell Keyboard and Mouse

I believe it was a good deal....wonky at times, but I attribute that to Norton- intial load takes forever, but I let it finish before I start anything.

  11.

A little off topic, but I'm hoping that GPU manufacturers (namely ATI and NVIDIA) will start working on multi-core GPUs, as opposed to simply have multiple video cards. I never liked the idea of SLI / CrossFire, because the cards take up so much space, suck up so much power, and give off so much heat (to say nothing of cost). Having one video card with several GPU cores on it seems like a much smarter graphics solution; oh well, I can dream...

Isn't the NVIDIA 7950 GX2 sort of like that...I mean it's like SLI on a single card. It's close, not exact, but still it's something.

I'm planning on building a Core 2 Duo system using the E6600, cause of it's overclockablity.

  12. Going back rridgely's post - I'm worried that Vista isn't going to fix as many problems as it should. Back in the Sept. '05 issue of Maximum PC, they talked about 5 ideas that either Linux or Macintosh was better than Windows with.

For example, when you install a program in Windows, it spreads stuff in many different folders, DLL's for example. If you uninstall the program, those are left behind, and are only removed when you do a complete fresh install of Windows. OS X for example, the programs are self contained in one icon (!?) so uninstalling them is as simple as dragging them to the recycle bin.

Hopefully, Vista will help more than people are thinking, but I'm not getting my hopes too high yet.

BACK ON TOPIC- If they made a do-all program, it would be good for the people who know next to nothing about their comptuers, but for people like us, who are resourceful, we wouldn't need such a program.

  13. Here's an amazingly through article on the Core 2 Duo's - Anandtech - The Empire Strikes Back

After reading that, and myself wanting to build my own PC, I'm thinking of gettting an E6600, for the fact it can be clocked up to 4 GHz and is still stable.

Oh ya - my case that I got for free - my dad brought it home - Silverstone Tek - I have the silver one with the window - Good pic of silver case with window

  14. If you want a cheap computer, then AMD has really low prices on their processors nowadays.

Personally, I would go with an Intel Core Due (Conroe) due to that it is a very good processor.

Eldamnnen --- be careful... the Intel Core 2 Duo is conroe, while the Intel Core Duo isn't.

Those two things look fine. However, if you can convince your mom to order online, TigerDirect.com, NewEgg.com, ZipZoomFly.com, and others have really good deals, plus have really high customer ratings and are secure.

I'd be wary of a AMD Sempron 64 - they aren't very powerful - almost like the Celeron's - consider them a value processor. I'd highly suggest getting a bigger budge and investing in a Core 2 Duo. MUCH more powerful, very stable, and will last a very long time. Tiger Direct - Core 2 Duo's

My realitve just built a system with a Core 2 Extreme, with either a 7900 or 7950 GX2, and 2GB's of RAM, and it's stable as anything, and oh-so-powerful. His friend though had to spend $3600 on it, but it will last a long time. Anandtech.com has a review, and it proves that the processors destroy any AMD processor out there, including the newest FX-61.

What I'm saying is if you spend a decent amount of money now, you'll have a stable system for the future.

  15. Alright...I had an old sound card in my machine. Out of the blue, it stopped working-I noticed that the sound icon wasn't appearing anymore. When I checked it, it said the device was in use, but it wasn't, so I switched out the sound card with another one I had from a machine my dad brought home, and I put it in. It works now, but for some reason, the icon won't display. I'm running Windows 2000 pro, and I update and run Ad-Aware and Norton AntiVirus pretty regularly. I was wondering if you could help me.

I have an attached screen shot.

Also, I have a HijackThis log if anyone wants to check it out.
