  1. yayyy! Thank you, lokoike! I knew it was simple. I think what threw me off is I've never pasted unless I copied or cut first, although, I spose, in a way, I did copy - the screen! ok, there's that pane. I don't think I've ever had it before - hate it. sonsie
  2. Hi Andavari, Weathering those tornados ok? I might have known you'd assign a task that I don't know how to do. LOL I know that to make a screenshot I press 'ALT' and 'Print Screen', but....this is embarrassing....where the heck do I find the picture then?? When I used to play an online game I did it all the time, but the pics were always in the game's folder. The pane is a column on the left, about 2 1/2 inches wide, goes from top to bottom of the screen, and in it are expandable boxes - one says 'Folder Tasks', one says 'Other Places', and the last says 'details' and that one, when I expand it, lists whatever I have open...IE, My Documents, etc. I've seen the pane in folders, and can go to 'tools' and make it appear and disappear, but the one on desktop won't leave. I still wanna post a screenshot so I know how. sonsie
  3. &*%@* grrr hating MS and the 'Help Manual' (HA!) writers and the developers and just for good measure...computers, too "Hey! Let's take the simplest 30 seconds tasks and make them take at least an hour to solve and make people look reeeeally stupid by putting instructions in code so they have to write in and ask a forum!" Does anyone know how to get rid of the freakin' pane that's suddenly residing on the left side of my desktop? and yeah...it's been at least an hour of searching for answers. sonsie
  4. ahhh, ok - so mndftwod lkriweh hbdgwtqa. That's pretty foreign to me, but from what I can understand it doesn't sound like a very brilliant concept. Thanks Andavari! sonsie
  5. Turns out it's a CD-R. Space wasn't a concern since there's still some open, I mainly wanted the ease of deleting the bad things from the disk. There's so many things I don't do on the computer on a regular basis that I have to think them thru and concentrate. Like with this task, I scanned to find the bad files, then went to that folder first while it was on my mind, selected the bad ones, inverted and copied the good ones to HD. Done - now just copy the rest of the files without having to keep an eye out for the bad ones. Not all files were cooperative so it took about 30 mins of success/failure and reboot to get the rest copied. The bad files were in a folder within a folder and by the time I got to it, it had been so long that I forgot and copied the whole folder, bad files and all! Luckily I ran a scan and caught them. hmmm...don't know what packet writing software is. I have Nero Burning ROM and Nero Express, and ULead DVD MovieFactory and I wish I knew how to use even one of them really well. I think a large part of my problem is that the software developers assume that if I'm going to use it, that I must have a certain level of knowledge, and they write instructions from that knowledge level - but I don't; sometimes I'm not even really sure what the software does, I just know it has something to do with making my pictures look nice (or whatever). I got one program that I got specifically because I could have sworn it said it joined movie parts, and was in that section on the site. I think it even mentioned it in that category on a review site like download.com. But when I looked at the instructions, it said it changes AVIs into MPEGs. I get all motivated to learn something, like how to join/splice all of the movie parts I have, but when I get started I end up spending 30-60 minutes traipsing around the net looking for definitions of terms. By then I'm fed up and quit. But hey! I have the correct time on both my VCR and DVD players! Thanks for all your help! sonsie
  6. alrightaroonie then! Simpler than I expected. Yeah, once I find the file I'll upload and let it scan. They probably already have one but that's ok. Looks like a very cool site, btw. Viruses and bad things make me nervous, I don't even like getting my mouse near them. Turns out for good reason, too. Was watching a scary movie in the middle of the night recently, someone *BOOO* suddenly appeared in front of someone else, accompanied by that spooky music they play. I screamed and jumped, the cats ran, my mouse hand scooted and clamped down on buttons, and I deleted a note I was writing. Usually when there's a particularly suspenseful part I look away, sometimes even hum. Being scared at 2am just isn't the same as being scared at 2 PM! LOLOL Thanks for all your help. Off to give it a go----> sonsie
  7. If I scan the whole CD on that site, it won't keep a record of the files, will it? It's all personal files like letters and employment records, and I don't know exactly where the bad file is, so would have to scan the whole thing. Yes, you explained that clearly. It's a lot of files, but I guess would be worth the time and hassle since it would be pretty risk-free. Actually, if I look for and find the bad file first, it would go pretty fast - just select everything else. Possible Dumb Question Alert - if I copy the files that way and plan on trashing that CD and making a new one, do I even need to scan the bad file? sonsie
  8. I've always been under the impression that you can't delete individual items off of a CD. Just checked Windows 'help' - it says you can erase a whole CD but not individual files. Good golly miss molly! That may be the first time I was actually able to find what I was looking for in Windows help! And it answered my question! OK, kind of lost here - as I understand it, I should insert CD, scan with ewido, AVG, Ad-Aware, and MS antispyware. - I'm assuming that once it's detected with a program I don't need to continue scanning with any programs I haven't used yet? Then I'm to upload the file to that addy and have it scanned. I don't understand the reasoning behind that...if I locate it with my scans, copy files to HD, remove the CD, and delete the file from HD, why scan at that address? Oh cooool!! I've had problems with that happening with other CDs. I never knew about the shift thing! sonsie
  9. This is probably really elementary for a lot of you, but I don't know the answer: I have an old homemade CD with data on it. I'd like to copy the data to my hard drive. I know there's a bug on the CD because last time I used it, a scan found a bug on my computer and I traced it to the CD. I have no idea how a bug on a CD interacts with the computer, so please bear with me if I ask some 'well duuuhhh' questions. The bug is xpl.wmf, but the CD is about 7 years old, so I don't know if it's the same as the recent windows exploiter bug, which is what I get when I look it up. Is it safe to insert the CD at all? If so, is it safe to insert the CD, copy it to the HD, take the CD out and immediately delete the file that the bug's in? Can you copy a CD to HD in safemode? If so, is that my best bet? Any help appreciated. sonsie
  10. LOL Thank, krit - I had to do so much explaining I was afraid it might lose something in the telling. <sonsie eyes lokoike's digital kilts> "So...tell us just what's under those kilts - and please, be brief," sonsie says as we all jockey for position, barely able to contain our eagerness to hear the answer. sonsie
  11. You know how sometimes you'll be walking through a crowd and you hear snippets of conversation which, when put together, can sound really weird? And the same thing can happen when you're reading something - like tv guide online can't always fit the whole name of a show or movie into the allotted space, so they do the dot dot dot (...) thing and what you end up with is a silly combination like "She Never Knew...All Dogs Go To Heaven". I saw one of those in our forums on the main page at CCleaner Bug Reporting, over on the right side where it gives the last post posted. It says: "Not all index.dat files are Norwegian." Good to know. sonsie
  12. hi lokoike, Funny you should mention that. Shortly after I added a router with firewall, and then also added Kerio personal firewall, I noticed I no longer had anything on my scans! Prior to that I'd get 1-5 'bad guys' almost every day, even if it was only a tracker that I picked up with Ad-Aware. In fact, before the firewalls, I don't think I ever ran an Ad-Aware scan without finding at least one 'critical item'. It probably happened but it doesn't stand out in my memory. Don't know if anyone else has noticed, but suddenly Ad-Aware has updates available almost daily, whereas it used to be every couple of weeks. sonsie----->who just found out recently that she has a wee bit of the Scottish in her.
  13. Sorry, but I find it humorous that you blindly rush to the defense of Norton without even asking me if I run updates or how often. I get updates daily on all of my security programs- 3 days is the longest I've gone without one. I don't even wait for the LiveUpdate, which I believe runs once a week, but instead opt for the 'Intelligent Updater'. I also run a full scan a minimum of twice a week. I'm not here to argue, but I did want to correct your emphatic statement that I don't update or run scans. I simply asked a question that apparently no one, including you, can answer. 14. LOL it's pretty easy to listen to other people when you know little yourself! See above. LOL Seriously, I've used a computer for close to 10 years, but it's just been the last few months that I knew anything but antivirus programs (or anything except viruses) existed. You might be surprised how many people are out there just like I was - no clue, not much interest in getting a clue - they just want to log on and do what they do. I'm not knocking them, it's just a different approach to their computer. I had no idea security was such a large area of interest. I went to a forum to ask about something and wow! malware, spyware, firewalls, antispyware and on and on. Scared the hell out of me the first month or so that I looked at my logs. Seemed like everyone in the world was knocking on my computer door or trying to break in through the windows. I was doing full scans with 4 programs 3-4 times/day cuz I didn't trust the software to catch anything. Now a couple of days go by before I view them. The reason I first turned to Norton as antivirus a couple of years ago is that I was so ignorant about what existed that I didn't even know to look anything up. How can you search for something you don't know exists? LOL McAfee and Norton were the two biggies. I've never had any problems with Norton antivirus or GoBack that I know of, but I really like AVG - simple and effective. btw, one thing, maybe the main thing, that keeps many people from learning more is that they feel intimidated. I used a computer for almost 10 years before I posted to a forum. I was scared to death that all of these knowledgeable, intelligent people would make me feel like a fool, whether intentionally or not, for knowing so little that I couldn't even use the correct terminology to describe my problem. Instead, I found some of the most patient, caring, helpful people on earth willing to take time from their personal lives to assist others who need them. Now, I not only get help, I have fun, too! Who'd a thunk it?! Very cool. Kudos to all of you who volunteer your time and help. If they're going to install anything, I agree. Personally, I don't think they should install a thing. What's worse is when the customer specifically says don't install anything, they say ok, but do it anyway. A tech at castlecops had that happen and it took her a day and a half to get rid of the crap they'd installed, some of it containing spyware. I never used to read the user agreements, just clicked "I accept." Now I at least browse to make sure there's no notices of 'third party agreements'. sonsie
  15. ...aaaand if the people monitoring their country's entryways, especially airports, are not only trained well but also do their job. Doesn't do much good to lock all the doors and leave the windows open. Thanks! It's fun browsing around for them. I have one that's a favorite, but women sometimes don't see the humor in it so I don't use it often. I like it purely for the humor and mental picture: "So you're a feminist...ain't that cute." <sigh> I swear cww - since I realized you're in Greece, every time I see your name I get beautiful images of blue, blue water and hillsides lush with villages of white stucco leaning out over one another to catch a salty whiff of sea. I have lots of pictures of Greece from the webshots site that I use as my desktop. Love the food, too. sonsie
  16. Oh gosh, that's too funny! I HAD AVG and loved it but gave it up for Norton because that tech said he liked Norton better! I had ZA for a couple of weeks too, but I never felt like I really had it set up correctly and that made me more nervous than not having anything. Uninstalled it, kept Norton, added Kerio. I'd forgotten all about AVG and am going back to it asap. Still have it in fact. That was unreal. I still have the emails. He was from another country so I think language played a part in it, plus I write too much and probably confused the issues. He was very polite, and as frustrated as I was and as angry as I was with Symantec in general, I couldn't get mad at him. So I just never responded. No way could we have cleared anything up. We were like 2 ships in the night - passing and waving but unable to communicate. I have the same problem guessing the sex of the person I'm talking to. I usually assume it's a guy. Last week on another forum, I kept referring to someone with the nick 'taz-(plus some numbers) as a 'he'. Heck, I'd dated a taz and he was a he! But in this forum it was a she. LOL ok, gotta go do an msn or symantec scan. Don't know what this file is off by itself, but when I just googled it I got everything from the "Seventh Annual Rice Environmental Conference Press Release" to Magistr virus to celeric soup. And as I was reading about the Magistr virus and they were talking about initializing it, I thought jeeez sonsie! use your brain! don't go clicking on files that you know nothing about, even if it does say it opens in notepad! EDIT: I'm so proud. I found out what that strange file was. It's a WMP history. sheesh! I've never seen one like that nor in that location! good window's tips site btw: http://libertyboy.free.fr Sonsie - trying to picture imploded prunes
  17. gunner, cww, Eldmannen, loko - thanks. I'm convinced. I think I'll go ahead and ditch Norton AV now and read the antivirus threads to look for something else. I'm looking for something easy to operate - very little, if any, hands on. No confusing logs that make me panic - Norton did that in spades! I couldn't interpret the logs and couldn't find a manual or customer service that could/would explain it. Turns out they were nothing to panic about - pretty normal. But being a newbie in this security stuff I was reading every security log I had several times a day. Finally figured out that was the problem. LOL Now that we've gotten that taken care of - how do people feel about Norton GoBack? Seriously, a tech said that he could never make it and Windows get along and play nice. As far as I know, I don't/haven't had any problems, and there have been quite a few times when GoBack has saved my butt..well, actually my files. On the other hand, it could be causing invisible problems. IF I were to get rid of it, is there anything comparable to take the place of it? Windows system restore is pathetic. cww & gunner - I'm jealous. Greece is my first choice for a country to visit someday. btw, Symantec and I had several email interchanges in which I was trying to get some questions answered - I swear, if they'd been taped we could have sold it as a comedy routine! They were giving me directions to configure an application I didn't have, telling me to click on buttons that didn't exist, and answering questions I didn't ask. "Who's on first...." btw#2 - I apologize if I post excessively or ask too many questions - bad combination of little knowledge and much curiosity sonsie ---> is a girl - need more mascara on those smilies.
  18. Yeah, I won't pay for security anymore. But I was naive. I never had anything other than an antivirus for 10 or so years. By the time I got this new computer in December, I had gotten a tiny bit of education regarding security. I'd had Norton before and was ok with it, so, not knowing what great products were available for free, I got it again. I was being a bit facetious here. Seriously, I was wondering if anyone knew why Norton had 3 sigs being monitored in the morning, and that afternoon after an update I had 573. Why such a drastic difference? Why weren't at least some of those 573 configured into the application when I got it? Anyone know? Just kind of curious. For security I have Ad-Aware, MS antispyware, ewido antimalware, Norton, Kerio personal firewall, and an broadband router with firewall. nooo, I wasn't clear or something. I've had 4 (or 3) HDs go bad on me in 4 months. I don't have 4 HDs! Now that would be a waste of space! Wouldn't have a clue what to use all of that for. I'm just a lil general computer user. sonsie (pssst...Symantec has, imo, the all-time worst customer support. That alone will keep me from using any product of theirs again.)
  19. LMAO! yep! "My mom said I could use her account." I didn't read that book, but I've seen a movie where a guy stole an eye to get through a scanner. Pocket lint on the eyeball ewwww yuk! I still say the bacteria is nothing to worry about - why should a fingerprint scanner be any different than anything else that we all touch after one another all day, every day. It would gross you out if you had any idea how many bacteria are on your face right now - your hands, every single part of you. There's nothing bacteria-free on your body, and plenty of infested places in your body. And most of the bacteria inside is for our protection. It's when it gets out of balance that we run into problems. Did you know that urine is actually sterile until it hits your skin upon exit? That UK Co-op system is what lokoike posted about - it's happened in a grocery store in the town where he lives in Illinois already, too. Says it's like a debit/credit card. I dunno - something I just don't like about it. sonsie
  20. Maybe it's Head and Neck Support? <shrug> I'd bet the government has thought of a few of the wrenches that can get thrown in - they've been using fingerprinting and retinal scans for a while, like probably in Fort Knox, the Pentagon, possibly nuclear power plants. I'm guessing they'd automatically take all ten prints and keep them on file in case you lost whatever main finger they used, and even if you lost part of it, there are something like over 100 points they can use for identification on one print. Hey! What does your sex have to do with it and since when is the term 'broad' acceptable?! <snicker snicker> LOL Acronyms can get pretty obscure. I think they're kind of fun, but I get frustrated if enough time passes and I can't come up with it - they're perfect for those 3:30am 'aHA' moments. hmmm...wonder what the longest acronym is... sonsie
  21. yes I did - have had it about 3 months
  22. Not a real important comment/question - just curious... I use Norton AV 2005 and just happened to be looking at the activity log a bit ago. I've been using it for several months and under 'worm protection' it's always said "Internet Worm Protection is monitoring 3 signatures." Today it's monitoring 573 ! I see that the date of the last revision was 12/8 and the new one is 3/15 and 3/17, so that explains it, but still....my god - who was watching out for those 570 signatures all this time?! sonsie
  23. Cracked me up too, krit! and get this - the first time I opened the file I quickly closed it because of that beginning scene that said "Incoming call. Detecting pone number." Then I remembered I wasn't on dialup. Talk about a blond moment! Oh I agree and I wear my seatbelt 100% of the time! Point is, that should be my decision, not a babysitting government forcing me to do what's good for me. "WHAT?! You talkin' to me?? You talkin' to ME?? Whachooo talkin' 'bout I can't have a steak?! And I won't brush my teeth and you can't make me!" LOL sonsie
  24. wow krit! I'm impressed with your security measures. Like you, I feel like I could use improvement, but mine has improved a lot just since the first of the year. So my goal is to do better, but I'm pleased for now. I'm not sure how I feel about fingerprinting. Like so many issues that turn out to be hotbeds of discussion, I can see good points and bad. The main thing I would fear is a fingerprinting invasion. I was surprised to hear that it's already in grocery stores (plural because I'm assuming that it's more than the one mentioned). It provides security, yes, and if instituted all over the U.S. (or world) in every venue, we could sure catch some bad guys. But man - talk about Big Brother! It brings to mind my parents - they were conservative Republicans, well-known and respected in their town, Dad had a high position in the University and Mom did the social event support thing - and I was flat out shocked when I heard their reaction to the news some years ago that the new state law was requiring them to wear seat belts. I would have thought they'd be behind it 100%. But they were angry - said the government had no right to dictate whether or not they wore seat belts, that it was an invasion of privacy and an example of the government delving into our personal lives too far. It reminds me of the pizza commercial: http://www.aclu.org/pizza/images/screen.swf hmmm...things to ponder in the wee hours of the morning. sonsie
