I do NOT like this new reporting format at all. Worse still, is that even after unchecking the two "24 hour" options in settings, the cleaner still repeatedly skipped my temp. internet files. Somehow I was finally able to do it. I don't like paying for this, the Pro version, when I could be frustrated "for free" without the purchase.... Making all these PITA changes may stroke developer egos, but does not improve customer experience.

There seems to be no problem using older version; all is well.

Well, that works for about 2 cleanings. It is a great PITA to open Win Explorer and go through this each time I want to clean. So I deleted it (and other Pro programs) and re-installed from the Backup CD I bought along with the Pro array of programs. The installed CCleaner version is different than the last update. Now installed: v. 5.12.5431 I've run it three times and all is good, so far. Time will tell. I will try not to update this installed version.

The solution is in the last post of this Piriform Community Support thread: https://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=2d0203d815bece47b2df05a72928be96&showtopic=20687&page=2 However, when I looked at these two items, each/both were correctly checked/unchecked, respectively. Just for the heck of it (being both curious and desperate) I unchecked the "Hide Protected Internet Files" and then re-checked it again, leaving it checked as directed in the thread by Denise. I then checked the "Show hidden files and folders" box, ignored the warning pop-up window that arose after checking that box, and then clicked on the box again to remove the check (box empty), again, as directed by Denise. I then backed out of Windows Explorer, restarted my PC just to be thorough, ran CCleaner, and now it's working as it had been and should be -- Internet related files now being deleted. I suspect some Windows 7 update made those settings "shaky" for some reason; the two items were already set correctly, but somehow not recognized or rendered effective after the Windows update. Stuff happens, sometimes strangely. I'm glad I stumbled across the fix. Sum: What I did was simply "refresh" those two Win7 settings already correctly set.

This started today; discovered minutes ago. Run the Cleaner ---> Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files, History and Cookies being reported as having been "Skipped." Run the Cleaner's "Analyze" and it reports that there are files (sometimes "Cookies" is being skipped here also). Run the Cleaner again -- files still being skipped. All three of these items ARE checked on the left side of the Cleaner window. Does anyone know why CCleaner is skipping cleaning these three files? How do I get my CCleaner to clean normally again? I am using the current version, updated a few days ago: CCleaner Professional 5.23.5808 (64-bit) on a PC with Windows 7, and Internet Explorer 11. Thanks. PS ...been searching the internet.... Thanks. I'll probably do this next week. BTW, you stated, "you probably only need to reload WLM...." I've read that installing Windows Live Essentials 2012 is recommended, of which WLM is one of the components. My WLM is "2011". Do I have an outdated WLM version (2011) or is (was) WLM 2011 carried over as the current version of WLM in that Live Essentials 2012 package of programs? I cannot find an answer to this question.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure, exactly, what you mean when you say, "...you'll have to redo your email accounts...." What, exactly, is lost? Only the contacts list? (Well, read below, you may not need to answer....) (OK, you must mean the server parameters for communicating via my cable provider.) I do receive all messages without problem, as I always have. However, every message in every folder has been duplicated upon reverting from Win10 to Win7; all messages in that entire data base of folders were duplicated if they existed at the time of reversion to Win7. Messages received or saved after reversion are single/normal, and are not duplicated now when WLM reopens or accesses the WLM data. One of the two emails is often defective, in that it can’t be deleted or moved (get an error message). I'd like to list what happens; perhaps there is something here to lend more clues as to what is going on. Open WLM 2011, and see: -- (re: the message in the inbox that is highlighted/selected) "WLM did not shut down correctly." Option in preview pane to "click" link to view the message anyway; this works. My main problem(s) --- cannot send any email message whatsoever: Upon “clicking” on any link that will allow me to SEND an email, I get “WLM has stopped working” within the blank email page: (new) Email, Reply, Forward. After this, the WLM either closes & reopens on its own or I have to “click” the Cancel button. Sometimes (but not always) I get a preliminary message as WLM opens: “Recovering Data Base” or something like that. I reviewed my email account attributes, but saw nothing wrong, e.g., SMTP, but since I can't even begin to type a message, let alone send one, I'm sure this setup/settings are not the problem. Not being able to send an email is really frustrating. Fortunately, my wife’s Apple iPad has had my email account set up on it and this is how I am dealing with emails until I fix this problem. ANYWAY, I’ve had my current computer about three years, and I’m about to save all my data, downloaded programs, etc., on an external HDD, and reformat the C drive; using HP’s D drive to “rescue” my computer by reinstalling everything. There would be a lot of downloading of updates, but this should get rid of problems and garbage. This may be the ultimate fix, wouldn't it? A few days ago I upgraded from Win7 to Win10. The Win10 is just terrible, so I reverted back to Win7. The process was quick and easy. However, my reinstalled Windows Live Mail is really buggy now. Many Inbox messages are duplicated, with one of the now two "identical" (duplicated) email messages resulting in an error message, and these cannot be moved or deleted (always get an error message when trying). I can't send or reply to an email - get error messages. Opening more than two or three pages at a time on the MS browser results in error messages. Both of these programs go into a vicious cycle of rebooting & error messages. Unless I jump ship and go with Apple, I don't see any other option than to reinstall my complete system. I've never done that before. I'm sure it's a gigantic PITA. How do I reinstall CC Pro without paying again for it? In addition to any advice about that, if you know how I can de-bug my PC problems since reverting back to Win7, I'd appreciate that also. Thanks.

Interesting/good stuff from the both of you mods. I'll look into these things. I run CC frequently, try to do this daily, especially after a lot of "research" (lots of sites visited) on the web, unless I've stumbled onto things that I might want to return to via my daily browsing History and that I didn't add to my Favorites file. I like to wipe out all my footsteps. Nothing stays for more than 48 hours. Anyway, I think we're getting there, to the point where we will identify and be able to completely delete our browsing histories. It's sort of like researching a cure for cancer, isn't it. I searched my files for something unusual. Right now Yahoo has my town listed in its weather report, so I searched for it. At each page of search results, I arranged the files from most recent to oldest, knowing that the any suspicious file would be very recent, dated for today, or yesterday at the very latest. Nearly all results were saved email messages and saved word processing documents. So I opened the C drive, looking for something besides these items. This is about the only thing I found with a recent date of creation and modification: OS(C:) --> Users --> (my name) --> AppData --> Local --> IconCache.db This "IconCache.db" file is a "Data Base File" that is 17.9 MB is size. It was not deleted by running CC. It was created just last Monday, so it must be caching a lot of stuff (and not temp files; too small for that), being so large. It seems like this could be something. I did not try to open it, not sure if I should delete it. Thoughts?

Thanks, everyone for all these replies. I'm going through them again, and thought I'd re-investigate this advice. (The more I go over things, the more I understand.) Here's a screen shot of a tab in the browsing history settings: Well, it seems (since there is a separate tab) that "Caches and databases" is (are) not the same thing as "Temporary Internet Files." May be something.... Thoughts on this? PS - Looking again, I see that there are no websites listed within that small window for a listing of web sites. But with the primary block "checked" maybe there is some caching going on somewhere...?

realtime - thanks for that link. Just what I needed. I just went through those steps you listed. I then opened my home page, Yahoo News, and there was the temperature/weather of my home town! And I'm in a suburb (different Zip Code) of the "cable location" city I live next to. I do keep a very few cookies preserved with CC, but I've never used my address with any of them. The only thing I can think of is what someone once mentioned on a previous post of mine -- that the info comes from my ISP address. I have a hard time believing, though, that it could be that specific. Maybe this is all beyond our control now.... a new world.

Here's what I have going on: OS: Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1 Browser Name and Version: Internet Explorer 10, Version 10.0.9200.16618, Update Version 10.0.6 (KB2838727) Adobe Flash: is checked (ON) Should this be unchecked (OFF)? I believe I updated this two or three weeks ago; perhaps the update defaulted to ON. What's the significance of this (ON vs. OFF)? BTW, under that second tab, every option is checked except Sun Java and Game Explorer. No, I don't use any sniping software, and I am unfamiliar with any/never knowingly used RSS.

I don't keep any ebay cookies on the "saved" / retained side of CCleaner's Options window, so when I spend time surfing the net & ebay, all ebay (as well as all other non-saved cookies) are deleted. I used to be able to return to those sites, and there was no hint that I was there previously, e.g., on ebay this would be the item name & link, blue in color if not previously opened, purplish if the link/web page/item had been accessed. I cleared my cookies and everything else that CC cleans when run (but I do not run the "advanced" feature options that you see listed faintly below the default items cleaned -- should I? Which one?) Well, I just went to my usual ebay listings just to check up on things, and I see that the items that I viewed yesterday have "already been opened" (changed link color). Yet, I ran CC twice since my last visit to ebay. This is something new that I'm seeing, and I don't understand why it's happening. My viewing history is not being deleted... somewhere! I get this even when I am NOT signed into ebay. Who knows what's going on? If this is the case with ebay, I'm sure it's happened everywhere. I get an amazing number of targeted ads all the time. I'm not sure. Noobs worry about a lot of things (until they're sorted out)! I guess my position is to be concerned until the proper knowledge renders my concerns baseless; a defensive position. I guess I'm sort of a privacy nut also. I do use PayPal when that option is available, but it often isn't an option (i.e., you must use your credit card at the point of purchase). I don't think that any installed internet security software is entirely fautless. I'm happy that you and the others here have helped me understand more about this. Thanks.

Ha, Ha... (Where's the laughing emoticon?) Not really worried, but learning what I have learned here these past few hours, I feel less concerned now about this identity thing. I realize now that my name and specific geographic location/home address isn't being revealed. I suppose it would be a good idea to run CCleaner immediately after making any/all on-line purchases...?

I don't suppose there's a way to mask that, is there? I imagine this is an essential piece of information that enables us to communicate with our IP and use the Internet....

I tried your suggestion. Yes, the results included dealers within a 50 or so mile radius. Not only that, but as I was typing in the search criteria (name of auto mfr.), all those dealer locations appeared in the drop-down window that has suggested search criteria, tryig to guess/help you enter the search terms you are typing in.

You know, I did sign up for Google's Gmail a couple of years ago. I didn't like it, and canceled my account a few days later. I'm thinking now that even though I no longer have the account, they probably still have my information, although I don't know exactly what information I was required to provide when I signed up. I guess I'll have to move.

Hey, guys, thanks for the responses. I've just been at both B&N and Amazon researching a book purchase; thought I'd check back for a moment. I haven't yet read all the info/links you provided yet.... It occured to me as I was brousing that the town referred to in these ads is not my specific location; I live in a suburb with a different name. As I searched, both B&N as well as Amazon were presenting location-specific ads to me (I did not sign on to either). The only time I think I provide that town's name is when I want to check my Time Warner TV schedule. (I have the trio of services by Time Warner - phone, cable TV and RoadRunner internet) But, that cookie for the specific TV show line up gets deleted when I run CC. I would like to use "ixquick.com" web site that deletes your trail within that search engine after three days or so, but it is a poor substitute for the real Google search engine. I just can't get the results I want from that site. I'm pretty much a noob, but could there be some information within my registry that avoids being purged? Overall, I like CCleaner a lot. (It is the only Piriform program that I've tried....) Anyway, I'll read all of your advice later. Thank you all very much.

After using the Cleaner, I've often noticed that I would still have ads on my home page regarding busnesses near my home. Subsequently, I elimiated all cookies for web sites that might have my address from pior visits, purchases, etc. However, a few minutes ago, I googled Barnes & Noble, and near the top of the search results were a map and locations of B&N stores near my home. I ran the cleaner again, after checking my cookies again and getting rid of a couple more (via CC's cookie mgt.), and when I repeated the same search, again I get location-specific results. Google knows where I live. So, something is not being erased by CC. Does anyone know what it is? How can I ensure better anonymity online? How can I truly erase my online tracks? I have not selected any of the advanced options when cleaning; should I?
