  1. Seen him in a coupla other forums asking the same question.

He must be going for a world record on the amount of forums you can join.

Google his name and you'll see what I mean.

Snort! Found him on the Laser Hair Removal Forums! (and I'm not joking, BTW!)

Must be an advertiser for Google, since that is the only link he gave. Like they need ads.

  2. post-1544-1146712357_thumb.jpg

Heh, you guys didn't know I was Russian, did ya?

@ zaph: That guy in the orange was awfully nimble. :D I'll stick with headbanging, thank you.

  3. But Read-Only Memory? I don't know... perhaps just putting the operating system and its updates on it would work...

That's the beauty of Flash ROM: it is still called "Read-Only Memory", but yet it can still be rewriten (without the need of a soldering iron :P). Kind of stupid to still call it ROM, as it misleads, but that is what Flash ROM actually is.

You can still save and re-save things on it, so Windows treats it like a normal drive. The only downside is that it wears out faster, because the number of reads/writes of Flash ROM is far less than that of a hard drive or CD-RW.

  4. I don't like the idea of a power outage wiping out all my data. But I have a UPS, so who cares?

You must be thinking of RAM zaph. Flash ROM retains data without the necessity of a battery or capacitor. That is why you can save something on a Flash ROM memory stick, take it out of your computer for months, and the data still stays on it.

But, Eldmannen is right about Flash ROM's limited number of writes. :( I think it is in the tens of thousands, which is fine for a backup device, but I suppose if it was used as an OS drive, which reads and writes all day long, it wouldn't last too long. Oh well, maybe they'll up the capabilities in the near future. I sure hope so!

  5. Hehe... I have 15 processes if I exit Firefox, etc. and just plain look at my desktop when it's COMPLETELY idle. Optimization is a good thing :)

I've managed to play all of today's modern games with a 4-year old machine...

Well, it probably helps that your four-year old machine is way better than my two-year old machine... grumble grumble...

But any day now I'll break down and build myself something half-way decent. I have the money, but I hate to spend it... sigh...

We'll see how long I can put it off before I get sick and tired of my paperweigh-of-a-notebook and throw it out my window! I guess then I'll have to build a new one, cause I'm not about to give up my Internet!

  6. No strong drink for me tonight. Just a 2 pound burrito and some day-old donuts. Probably not a good thing to eat right before bedtime...

    ooooh.... stomach churning...

  7. Well slowday444, I just looked up pictures of your motherboard (see picture below), and sadly, you have neither an AGP or PCI-E slot. All your board has is three PCI slots, and while you can purchase PCI video cards, they blow. You might as well stick with your integrated video.

@ DjLizard: I suppose saying "most Dells" wasn't a very fair statement, but it seems like most Dells for individual consumers (not for businesses or for gamers) have no AGP or PCI-E slot. At least, that has been my experience on the majority of the Dells I've worked on (mostly Dimensions, which probably explains my viewpoint).

  8. Although my Dell tower is less than 2 yrs old, it doesn't have a digital output. I'm at work so I can't tell you what graphic/video cards it has. My children gave me a flat panel monitor for my birthday and I have it hooked up with the analog connection. Since every thing viewed on the monitor originates at the analog source anyway, is there any point in getting an adapter that plugs into the analog port and then you plug the DVI cord into it? I noticed on the Dell set up guide that some come with that adapter. At least I think that is what it was.

    Thank You!

Turning the analog into digital won't give you a better picture, because as you mentioned, the source is analog, and you can't get something from nothing. It would be the equivalent to encoding a 128 kbps MP3 into FLAC (fully lossless audio codec); you wouldn't gain any quality from it.

If you really want to get better video, the only option would be to get a cheap 64-128 MB video card (you'd pay anywhere from $30-120). The only problem is, most Dell's don't even have an internal video slot (AGP or PCI-E) so you probably don't have that upgrading option in the first place. :(

  9. What do you mean by that?

Well, considering right now the biggest HD you can get is 500 GBs (at least to the best of my knowledge), that means that this 750 gigger will boost the top HD size by 50%! So my personal feeling is that since this drive is designed to not only hold more files, but also bigger files, it should have a larger cache to help handle the workload more efficiently. I've always found that getting a drive with a bigger cache makes a huge performance difference! (much more than defragging :P) In fact, I personally prefer a bigger cache to faster platters.

So basically, I just think that it would be cool if they would start doubling and quadrupling the cache for the new perpendicular recording disks. That way, your drives wouldn't have to reaccess the same data as much (since a lot of it could be retained on the cache) which means less repetitive platter spinning, so you would get better performance and longer drive life span. Hopefully they'll at least bump it up a little once we get into multi-terabytes of storage...

  10. Psh. Forget that. I would rather have dual 150 gb Raptor-X 10,000 RPM HDDs in RAID 0. Dangerous, but seriously fast.

Even better and faster than those, Flash ROM hard drives! Nearly instantaneous data access, not to mention extremely low power consumption and practically no heat produced!

As soon as the price comes down and the data density increases, you can bet I'll be getting one as my primary OS hard drive. I can't wait! :)

  11. It's still quite a big waste of time, since using your computer for two years and then defragmenting it still doesn't really show any visible performance increase that I've ever witnessed.

Yeah, that was kind of my feeling as well. I've done defrags on all different machines running all different OSes and all different types of hardware, and I have yet to actually notice any performance boost after a defrag. And since I'm pretty sure you've worked on a lot more computers than I have, and you feel the same way, that basically confirms what I thought.

Theoretically, disk defragmentation sounds like a really good idea, but in reality, I just don't see how it helps. That said, I still defrag my HD, in hopes that perhaps I actually am shaving off a few tenths of sec or so, and I just don't realize it. :D

  12. Here's a 40 so you can chill!

Alright! I always shoots bestest when I'm good and drunk!

It took over one hour for it to allow an edit of my previous post just to add one freakin' letter "a"...

Well... it is a very nice "a"...

    *cough* dial-upFTL-lololol *cough*

  13. Just for something different...

On The 4th of May, at two minutes and three seconds after 1:00 in the morning, the time and date will be 01:02:03 04/05/06.

That won't ever happen again in our lifetime. In fact it will be approx 400 generations before it happens again.

I'll make sure to celebrate when I get off of work. :D

  14. If you look through the bug reporting and discussion part of the forum, I think even you, Ultimate Pedator, would admit that almost all problems are caused by things like VB errors, and permissions issues.

Other common problems are cookie saving and that old chestnut, the progress bar. None of which come into the catagory you mentioned, registry damage.

Of course there was the recent hotfix problem but this was flagged up very quickly and lots of warnings were issued. A one-off problem.

All in all it's an easy to use program, which is not distructive to the user as are some others. We all like to change our setups now and again, products change, as do our likes and dislikes. However this doesn't mean you should slag off what I'm sure you know deep down is a decent and safe program.

    I couldn't agree more.

I personally have been using CCleaner for a long time (way before I ever joined this forum) and I have yet to have an Issues scan remove anything necessary or useful from my registry. Not to mention I put it on every single computer I work on, and on all of those dozens of computers, CCleaner has also not caused any problems at all.

A lot of PC repair groups, such as the one who gave you your information, write their own software for installing drivers or other tasks that they don't feel like manually performing on every computer they work on. I would be willing to bet that if something went wrong on the computers they worked on, it was due to their own cruddy software, and not CCleaner. Either that, or like Andavari said, they're just feeding you a line so that you get nervous about trying to fix computers on your own, that way they get more business form you.

Don't let em' sucker you into wasting your money. Commercial software is definitely not always the best software.

  15.

i think i got it, i just disabled the "false" drive. thanks!

Glad it's fixed now. Just curious though, is there any chance that the "false drive" was in fact, an image drive?

There are a number of disk burning apps that can create an image drive so that you can run programs without having to use the disk. These image drives show up in My Computer as if they were physical drives, so perhaps that is what you have.

  16. I miss you too Andavari! :) It's nice to be able to talk to you again. w00t!! w00t!!
Well, you'd better enjoy him while he's still here, cause if he keeps making nasty remarks about my Yugo, you may never hear from him again!

    Bwa-ha-ha!!!

  18. HEY! You're talkin' to a lady bro!

Nah. K's one of the guys in my book. And that's a compliment, BTW!

Krit I mean. I'm only ladylike.

Ahhh... that would explain the high heels...
