  1. Even with updates off on ZAP, it keeps checking.

Strange... can't say that I've experienced that. I have mine turned off and it never checks for them, much less every five minutes.

Still haven't tried out Outpost yet, but I promise I'll get around to it! My Internet just finally got hooked up at my new house today, so I've obviously got a lot of things to catch up on.

  2. Even for the pro version?

Yup. If you download the free version, it will just make it the pro version once you restart your computer. To be on the safe side, you can always copy down you current serial, and if it still shows it as the free version after restarting, you can manually enter it in.

  3. My absolute least favorite thing in the world is that damn Recycle Bin icon! The bug is that you delete everything from it, and it still shows pieces of paper in it, even though it contains no files! And this isn't specific to XP; I've run into this problem ever since the dawn of the Windows GUI!

The only way I've found to fix it is to make a temporary file/folder, delete it, and then remove it from the Bin, AND EVEN THEN it doesn't always work!!! This alone is enough to make me want to switch over to nix!

It makes me wonder that if old Willy boy and his buddies at MS can't even take the time to fix something small like that, do they even care about the big stuff?! It's the little things that bother me...

  4. You could also remove the hdd from the PC, take it to another computer and format it there.

That's what I always do when working on a computer. You can get a USB > PATA cable for $30-50, and after you get one, you'll wonder how you ever lived without!

  5. I narrowed down to the "Empty Recycle Bin" on "System".

I tried to empty the recycle bin from windows, the same error message is displayed. (System indicates that there are 3 files but I could not see them, though i changed the folder option to view hidden and system files.

PS. There are no files in the recycle bin.

    Thanks

    Vasu

Hmm... it says there are files but in fact there aren't. That's a weird one. Did you ever delete a folder called 'Scanners', or are you unaware of how it ended up there?

I don't know of any Recycle Bin cleaning apps, although some of the other members on this site might. So for now, my only suggestions are:

    1. Make a .txt file (or any type, it doesn't matter) and then delete it. Then try emptying the Recycle Bin. This works for fixing the Recycle Bin icon, which is notorious for showing trash when there is none, so it may fix your problem as well.

    and if that doesn't work

    2. Restart your computer.

  6. I am running v 1.27.260 and the cleaner will analyze my system fine. When I run the cleaner the system will just run and not ever finish. The progrss bar just keeps scrolling.I can run the reg issues analyze and fix just fine. I can remove items from the start up and delete programs. I have uninstalled and reinstalled but still the same. I can only stop CC with task manager.help, I really like this program

Usually the first time you do a cleaning with CCleaner, it takes a long time, and then goes much faster every time thereafter. Look for the hard drive light on your computer's tower; is it blinking rapidly when the progress bar is moving? If so, that means that most likely CCleaner is just doing its job, and it is taking a while. Be patient, and see if it finishes.

However, if the hard drive light is not blinking, or only blinking periodically, most likely CCleaner is frozen. Bring up Task Manager and see is CCleaner is listed as 'Not Responding'. If it is, then CCleaner is frozen, but otherwise, just wait it out.

Another thing to check is if you have secure file deletion enabled or not. This overwrites your files multiple times to prevent information theft, but also leads to your cleaning taking far longer than normal. To turn this off, click CCleanerButton-Options.png, then click 'Settings', and under Secure Deletion, mark the 'Normal file deletion (Faster)' radio button.

  7. Still have the error message. Did the defrag also.

    Thanks

Okay, next suggestion is to click CCleanerButton-Cleaner.png, then click the Applications tab, then uncheck every single box. Then click the 'Run Cleaner' button again, and see if the problem re-occurs.

Since you found a folder named 'Scanners' under 'Program Files', I am hoping that having CCleaner not clean your applications will solve the problem. If the problem stops, start re-checking the listed app's boxes a couple at a time and running the cleaner to narrow it down to which program is the culprit.

If it doesn't work, post here, and I'll try to think of something else. :)

  8. I used the checkmark and didn't do any backups, am I in some deep shite ?

Well if so, you'll have to share your steaming pile with me, as I also never backed up my $hf_mig$ folder.

However, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. You and I may have a few updates that will contain the problem that Greenknight just referenced, but I doubt it will be a huge deal. You're still better off than the people who don't use Windows Updates at all!

That said, there is still no reason to use the broken Hotfix uninstaller option in CCleaner if you haven't already used it! Wait until it is fixed first!

  9. When I run the "Run Cleaner", it flashes with the error message "Cannot remove folder Scanners: The Directory is not empty" with the header "Error Deleting file or folder".

I could not find out the directory "scanners" in my hard disk. Only folder i have is at the

    c:\program files\Microtek\Scanwizard 5\Scanners"

I have renamed this directory and still I get the error message.

    Thanks

Try selecting CCleanerButton-Cleaner.png, click the Windows tab, navigate down to Advanced, and uncheck the 'Custom Files and Folders' checkbox.

If this box is already not checked, let me know, and I'll try to think of something else.

  10. How do you know that?

I manually deleted the uninstall folders on another computer, and rebooted. After that they were still listed in the add/remove programs list (without the option to uninstall). They were still listed. Once the the $hf_mig$ folder is gone they are no longer there.

I will test a second time to confirm. ;)

    Sorry, I didn't clarify:

I'm referring to the registry entries. Even if you remove the physical uninstaller files, the registry entries will remain until you run an Issues scan. If you haven't run an Issues scan, even though the files are gone, the Add or Remove Programs entries in the registry are still there, and they will still show up as present, even if they aren't. Here are some screenshots to explain this:

    1. After the Hotfix uninstallers have been removed by CCleaner:

    AddorRemovePrograms-HotfixUninstall.png

    2. Entries found by CCleaner after removing the Hotfix uninstallers:

    CCleaner-HotfixUninstallerIssues.png

    3. Add or Remove Programs no longer lists those Hotfixes after removing those 3 issues in CCleaner:

    AddorRemovePrograms-Hotfix2Uninstal.png

  11. (harass the SWAT team a bit [about 10 mins] as they swoop)

I suppose I could manage that. Harassing seems to come fairly naturally to me...

So by ten minutes, did you mean that is how long RAM can hold a charge? Do you think there would be anyway to explain my RAM "accidently" ending up in my microwave, assuming that ten minutes is hard to come by? My fear was that my harassing may actually hasten their desire to put me out of commission...

    Stint's two more Cents

Mr lokoike: Thanks for this, and all the past good info you post here

However, I am still wondering how "not being able to receive newer versions of updates I already have" is any less of a significant problem as "not being able to receive future updates"

Perhaps you are implying, rarely is version updated by updating updates? Usually just whole new update ?

I agree with you, and I wasn't trying to make the problem at hand sound insignificant. I believe it is a very big and very real problem. What I was trying to imply was that (to the best of my knowledge) removing this folder would prevent you from acquiring newer revisions of updates you already have, which of course, is not a good thing. So while you can get new updates, you can't improve your old ones.

Bottom line is if the folder is gone, IMHO you are "not better off than you were 4 years ago"

I was able to restore the folder, and all the hundreds of files inside, and I do not intend to uninstall any more of the uninstallers until I get LOTS more guidance, and hopefully more definitive fix from MrG

I also do not plan on removing any more uninstallers until MrG releases the fixed version of CCleaner. One question: what is "not better off than you were 4 years ago" in reference to? Did I miss a previous post?

Also, I just got done getting some Windows Updates. Couldn't come at a better time, right? :D So anyway, the $hf_mig$ folder is recreated, but only the updates that you download are added to it. In other words, previous updates are not re-added to the folder, so it is essentially still "broken", even though it is re-added. :(

A fix would be reeeeeally nice right about now!

    Stint's Two Cents:

Re-reading all posts the original thread about $hf...in Discussion Forum, started by CeeCee, especially info from Wraithdu,

I conclude that contrary to the above, the folder *will not* be re-installed with the next Win Update you download

I didn't initially think so either, but according to this comment made by krit86lr:

The folder will recreate itself the next time you install a hotfix.

That makes me think that it will reinstall the folder.

@ K: Did you test this out yet? I would, but I would have to wait until Microsoft releases more updates to do so. :(

To the contrary, it appears that if you deleted this folder and its cache...*you will not be able to install future updates*

Also, restoring the folder (and Unistallers if necessary) is IMHO the best action while waiting next CCleaner

Finally, THX MrG for overall a great product

Well, thankfully I can attest that that statement is in fact not correct. When I was using the CCleaner 1.27 beta, I removed all of my Hofix uninstallers (as well as the $hf_mig$ folder), and I have gotten updates since then with no problems. So you will continue to be able to get updates, even if this folder is removed.

If I have been reading these posts correctly, the problem does not lie in not being able to get updates, but instead the problem is getting newer versions of updates you already have. Without the $hf_mig$ folder, Windows has nothing to compare your current updates to, so it won't be able to update the updates you have currently installed.

  14. Outpost Free runs fine on XP and it doesn't bloat down the system like ZAP does either. The interface of ZAP is clunky and slow. They skinned it way back in 2.0 and they never fixed some of the issues with the skins, causing it to slow down the application dramatically. Just trying to load the programs window takes a while.

Thanks for the additional info on Outpost, Tarun. I have also noticed the periodic slow loading times for the ZA Pro Control Center. I still can't say that I plan on switching over to anything else (at least for now), but I definitely will have to give Outpost a shot on one of my non-primary computers, to see how it performs.

  15. I hope that it doesn't take that long either, but it isn't fixed as of now. I reinstalled today...same problem. :(

I totally agree with K and Andavari, this really should be fixed pronto. MrG stated that he has already adjusted the code to fix it, so why not release it now?

Also K, if you download a WinUpdate, that will recreate the folder and basically fix all of your problems? Just wanted to verify, cause I haven't gotten any updates since I removed my Hotfix uninstallers, so I wanted to make sure that this is easily reversible.

  16. I hate to burst your bubble, but the hotfixes should show up in add/remove programs.

I just ran CCleaner (I ticked hotfix uninstaller), and my hotfixes are still listed in add/remove programs. You should uninstall/reinstall, download either the slim or basic version. Something is funky.

If you run an Issues scan after removing your Hotfix uninstallers, and remove all of the listed entries, the Hotfixes will no longer be listed in Add/Remove Programs, because they can no longer be removed.

@ K: After running the cleaner function with Hotfix box checked, scan for registry issues and remove the ones related to your Hotfixes and see if they are still listed in Add/Remove Programs. They shouldn't be.

  17. i ran ccleaner on my windows xp pro x64 edition pc and i lost a bunch of short cuts, like: disk management, defrag, windows update...

i can get to these things in the round about way but the short cuts are gone. i did back up the registry entries when prompted, but the short cuts did not come back when i restored the reg entries.

    any ideas?

CCleaner doesn't totally support 64-bit OSes yet.

Check out this post for more information.

  18. The instructions tell you to choose a double digit number. If you choose a single digit number then you didn't follow the instructions.

You aren't supposed to pick a single digit number. If you pick a single digit number, and follow the math instructions you will get a negative number.

Right, I was picking a two digit number, although I wrote it as a pair of 2 single digit numbers, which is technically the same thing.

And I just figured it out! happy dance

I knew from K's previous post that any number you end up with will be divisble by 9, but I didn't realize that the symbols associated with the numbers changed each time you do it!

Example: lets say the number you get is 18, and the symbol for 18 (and every other number divisble by 9) is a star. Click the ball, and you get a star. Then try playing again. If you look at the number 18 in the list, its symbol will be different this time. All of the numbers divisble by 9 may have been stars before, but now they are, say, a crosses instead. So you will get different symbols, even though you are still getting the same numbers!

So all that the program does is randomly assign a different symbol with each number every time you run it!

Sorry if this was what you were trying to tell me all along, K!

  19. Today my computer just powered down, like if the power was cut.

    It did not restart.

Then I pressed the power-on button on the front of the computer, it would not power on. Then I flipped the power switch on the backside, watched TV for couple minutes, came back, flipped it back and pushed power-on button on front and it started.

    I suspect PSU.

Yeah, sounds like it. Bad PSUs are no fun. :(

At least you can find a decent PSU for a (relatively) small price. I don't remember what your exact specs were, but they were to high, were they? If you have an AGP video card, a couple HDs/optical drives, and maybe a few PCI cards, you should be more than fine with a good 400 watt PSU.

I didn't do a real specific search, cause I'm not sure what exactly you're looking for, but here are some 3-400 watt PSUs you may want to check out. The prices aren't too bad.

  20. I think there are some LCD displays that maybe can fetch temperature information and fan rotating speed, and display it on LCD panel that is mounted on a 5? (?) slot, a slot such as the one which the CD/DVD is installed at.

Yeah, some cases come with little temperature sensors. Usually there is one for the CPU that you tape to your heatsink and one for the HD that you can tape to that as well.

I have used the Aspire X-Navigator case on a pair of computers that I built, and that has temp sensors in it which display the results on a tiny LCD built-in to the case. Also, this particular case, as well as some others, has a fan knob for the 80 mm case fans to adjust the speed, in case your temperature starts to raise or lower.
