XP
In Windows Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, under Advanced Settings, do one of the following:
Select the Show Recycle Bin icon on the desktop check box to show the icon on your desktop.
Clear the Show Recycle Bin icon on the desktop check box to remove the icon from your desktop.
hazelnut,
I could be wrong but I don't think that's a standard option in Windows XP. I think you need this registry hack that adds that option to the settings menu binopt.reg

In Word, do you have Tools > Options > View > Formatting Marks > All enabled?
This will show the formatting symbols such as spaces, line breaks, etc. If one of those is causing the problem, you can use Edit > Replace > More > Replace > Special to select format symbols for replacement.
EDIT: Sorry, I missed the fact that your subtitle said Word 2007. The indicated path to those setting is for Word 2003 so may not be exactly the same for you.

Try scanning only one category of issue at a time to see if you can identify what might be causing the hang.

Hey guys,
I was just wondering if it is safe to remove chkdsk fragments with CCleaner? I thought it was safer to ask as I am not sure what they are. Thanks in advance for any advice.
They are "lost" fragments of file recovered by chkdsk so they could be anything. This article gives a pretty good explanation Recovering File Fragments

I have to clean my machines every 6 months ... cat hair gets into everything.
Vacuum cleaners are safest but be careful you don't suck up a loose part.
"Canned air" is usually not air. Difluoroethane is the most common but is highly combustible and can form an explosive air/fuel mix so, if you have to use it, make sure you ventilate the area well before powering up any devices. Tetrafluoroethane or CO2 are much safer but harder to find. In an enclosed space, they can all be hazardous by displacing breathing air.

Do you mean Windows Messenger? If so, have you enabled Display alerts?

Hi, just read this post. I have recently downloaded Recuva and just encountered the same problem.
I a running CCleaner v2 03552 and have selcteed the 35 pass deletion and have been able to open deleted files. Even when they are a poor status. I am running vista home premium if that makes any difference.
Which browser?
In Internet Explorer, if you have "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" enabled, the files are deleted by IE so CCleaner doesn't see them as files to be wiped. Also, if you have the size of the folder set too low, when it reaches capacity, old files get bumped out and you get the same effect.
If it's another browser, others may have suggestions.

Defraggler includes the A: drive on the list of drives available. It should not do that. The A drive is for 1.4-meg floppies.
By contrast, Auslogics Disk Defrag offers a configuration option to show removable drives or not. Even with the option on it does not list the A drive.
Although the benefit may be minor, there's nothing inherently wrong with defragging a floppy. Windows ME and earlier used to do it.

Which operating system? Which browser? Which version of CCleaner?
-
I already do that, but within each folder I also rearrange favorites. I suspect that IE keeps a file that maps the favorites in each folder, and CCleaner deletes this file. If I knew which one it is, I would delete it from the list that CCleaner deletes!!
Menu Order Cache will clear the order in which Favorites are displayed. I don't know if any other selections also do so.

That key doesn't even appear in my registry.
Which version of Windows are you running? The key is in WinXP, I think it was first introduced in Win2000 ... no idea if it's in Vista.
The key contains string values showing the paths for what appears to be every installed or portable program I've ever run.

XP System Restore doesn't do anything with data files. You have to backup data files by other means.
You could try Recuva but the more you use the harddrive, the more likely it is that you will overwrite parts of the lost files.

I thought I ran Recuva on my D: drive and saw a bunch of garbage I wanted to just clean off. I just reran it but didn't see anything now.
CCleaner is designed to clean specific files and file folders. If, for security reasons, you want to wipe previously deleted files, use a freespace wiper such as Eraser

What are you trying to clean on your D drive? Do you have an OS on D? Did you change the location of temporary / cache folders to D?

Thanks for the fast responses. Glenn, I have searched for these two keys on the registry and i found the first one had a a (1). and the second registry key had a (6).
The MFU list should be enabled so the only remaining thing that I can think of is that the applications may have been banished from the MFU. Go to the registry key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications
Note: this is not .application (with a leading dot) but is further down
and check the subkeys for some applications you use (e.g., notepad.exe) and want to have on the MFU, and make sure that they do not have a String value named NoStartPage. That string banishes the application from the MFU list (which is normal for some applications such as explorer.exe).

Changing the setting in CCleaner won't help now - its too late my start menu already doesn't list any recently used programs or documents.
The registry key you mention doesn't exist (which is the same as setting it to its default, I believe).
Thanks for your assistance
Check to see if you have the following registry keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced|Start_LargeMFUIcons
with a value that is either 0 or 1 ((the number determines whether a small or large icon will be displayed)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced|Start_MinMFU
with a value that is not 0 (the number sets the number of MFU entries to be displayed)
-
In CCleaner, if Other Explorer MRU's is checked, try unchecking it.
If that's not it, check the registry to see if you have the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer|NoStartMenuMFUprogramsList
and if the value is 1, set it to 0. Reboot for the change to take effect.

Have you selected any Cookies to Keep? If you did, CCleaner won't delete index.dat, only individual cookies.

(7 x 2) + (7 x 7 x 7 x 4) + (7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 4) = 10,990

I've got my computer running nice and smooth but in the task manager I have 6 svchost.exe running. 3 are SYSTEM 1 is LOCAL SERVICE and 2 are NETWORK SERVICE. I went into bleepingcomputer.com which has helped me a lot but I have no idea which ones I need and which ones I don't. I don't want to make the mistake of deleting things that are necessary because I ended up restoring the system. Any ideas? I'll include a screenshot so you know what I'm talking about.
6 instances of svchost.exe is perfectly normal
EDIT: This article may clarify Svchost.exe

If Windows is working properly, Prefetch is self-limiting. After it reaches 128 .pf files, it deletes all but the most recent 64.... You should delete them sometimes, because as the time goes by, the Prefetch directory can become very full and there for actually slow things down. ...
I've never seen Prefetch files locked in use.... And about your question: I think that those Prefetch files are used at the time, so they cannot be deleted...I have seen some computers where Windows wasn't working properly and excessive .pf files had accumulated.
CeeCee: Is that what you meant?
Bernard: If you really want to clean Prefetch, try manually deleting all of the contents one time. I normally don't clean Prefetch but where Windows wasn't working properly (as mentioned above), cleaning manually once seemed to fix whatever was wrong.

On the same vein as davey, are you using any security software or browser add-on that provides secure storage/auto logon, e.g., Norton Internet Security "Identity Safe"?
