  1. To confirm that's the problem, try running CCleaner once with Windows Log Files deselected and then with only Windows Log Files selected, or try deleting C:\Windows\setupapi.log once manually and see if CCleaner will run afterwards.

  2. Is there any reason not to post the embedded .ini on the ccleaner download site (perhaps on the builds page) when each new version of the app is posted?

Note that there is no problem downloading the portable version (a .zip file) from that page.

  3. Thanks, but that would only show the date of his latest update, right? Not when it was originally installed on his computer?

You could check the "Created" date for the C:\Program Files\CCleaner folder and the CCleaner shortcut in the Start Menu and/or Desktop.

Unless you deleted these manually when you did the updates, they would not be replaced and should reflect the original creation dates. I just checked mine ... updated last night but showing matching "Created" date from original installation.

Doesn't prove you used it but helps support your story if the installation date is several years ago.

  4. hello everyone,

Well I have used both and they each have some good points. Like in Open Office I found I could add images to a word doc and even resize and move them around-----can't do it in Word 2003. I was working on an ad for a friend's booth in a show and it was a great time saver; did not have to use fireworks or photoshop.

But then in Word, I can save URLs I want and it keeps them as a link-------Open Office does not seem to have that feature. So there you go, some more useless information for your decision making!

You can insert, resize and otherwise reformat images in Word 2003 easily. You can use the dropdown menus or simply use View > Toolbars > Picture to open the handy toolbar.

  5. I think you may be able to remove messenger?

    Doug Knox - Remove Messenger

I think this is another "disable & hide" method. Notice that the last instruction is to create a registry entry "... Dword value. Give it the name Hide Messenger ... set the value to 2."

EDIT: I did a little research and the method suggested in the article seems to be intended for XP without SP1. It seems to do what XP with SP1 does through the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components ... which I was under the impression only disabled and hid stuff like Windows Messenger, Outlook Express, etc.

  6. I have Adobe Flash, Shockwave & Avast AV installed but none of these have boxes on the Applications menu. Please advise.

    For Adobe Flash Player, CCleaner looks for the registry key: HKCR\CLSID\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}

Check to see if you have that key.

AFAIK, for Shockwave & Avast AV, you need winapp2.ini entries. If you have them, check the detect keys. If you don't have them, you can get them here

  7. Thank you ,sorry but i am unablle to check this. This problem hapens only with me?

    any advise please

Do you have this problem with all Office Recently used files? When you said "If i open a office doc", I (perhaps mistakenly) assumed you meant Word. Do you have the same problem with Excel, PowerPoint, etc.?

  8. Great job guys. I been using this product a long time and now I see Ad's. Good job turning a great product into Adware/Spyware (aka Yahoo)! I also love the no option notto install yahoo in the new version and I even had to reboot my system twice to remove to BS!!

??? What version are you using? The Slim version doesn't have the toolbar so there's no need for an option to not install.

  9. ... Especially when it comes to using CCleaner on corporate computers that are typically locked down by the IT support. ... Would be truly great if we can start working on this.

If the computer isn't yours and you don't have permission to go changing it, you shouldn't.

  10. Check to see if HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Data|Settings is being cleared when you run CCleaner. The data in the key is a little awkward to read but you should be able to discern the filenames from the Recently used files list.

Personally, I don't use the standard CCleaner routine to clean that key because it also holds the custom Word settings. I just disable "Recently used files list" in Word > Tools > Options > General.

  11. ... I have my Office 97 is ticked even thought I'm using Office 2000. ...

For some reason, CCleaner has routines for Office 97, XP, 2003 and 2007 but not 2000. You're getting the tick box for Office 97 because CCleaner detects the registry key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Common ... the "8.0" indicates Office 97.

EDIT: I don't know if earlier versions of Word stored their "Recently used files list" information differently but CCleaner's routine for Office 97 does not have an entry for cleaning the Word\Data|Settings registry key.

  12. OK Download over the old.

    davey,

I would agree with you if sparkyspark was upgrading 2.x versions but there was a significant design change from 1.x to 2.x.

I would uninstall 1.x first. I found that installing 2.x over 1.x left behind unnecessary (but harmless) files.

EDIT: I just read the announcement for 2.06 ... it'll be interesting to see if installing it over 2.05 will delete the now unnecessary winapp.ini.
