  1. "Disk defragmenter could not start." typically means that the utility is installed but that something is preventing it from running.

Have you tried running 'chkdsk' as suggested by Andavari?

Check to see if DCOM Server Process Launcher service is running. Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools > Services. Status should be 'Started; Startup Type should be 'Automatic'.

Check to see if Paging File is enabled. Right-click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory > 'Total paging file size for all drives:' should show a value such as 1024 MB. If not, click Change and, for Drive C:, select 'System managed size', click 'Set', then 'OK' on all dialogue boxes until exited.

  2. I'm not sure how one knows what version of Window is installed. Mine says 'Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, version 2002, service pack 3'
You have exactly what it says. Windows XP, Home Edition, SP3.

I'm more than a little concerned that Piriform offers a download that damages an operating system as commonplace as Windows 7 ...
Windows 7 is not commercially available until October. It is currently available only as a Release Candidate, for testing by those who want to take the risk. Therefore, no software can be guaranteed compatible.
  3. If you mean internet site passwords:

    - passwords saved in cookies are deleted if you clean cookies without protecting them using 'Cookies to save'.

    - passwords saved in IE Autocomplete Form History, Firefox Saved Form Information, etc. are deleted if selected for cleaning.

  4. Just to eliminate the obvious, have you checked your Firefox settings?

Firefox > Tools > Options > History 'Remember what I enter in forms and the search bar' selected?

Private Data 'Always clear my private data when I close Firefox' deselected and/or Clear Private Data Settings 'Saved Form and Search History' deselected?

  5. Do you have 'Cookies' selected in the Cleaner > Windows > Internet Explorer list?

If that's not the problem, try using the IE8 > Tools method to delete the cookies once, and see if CCleaner will manage them properly thereafter.

  6. CCleaner doesn't do anything by just being resident on your computer.

The settings you used should have been safe but if CCleaner did any damage, removing CCleaner won't help.

I would try restoring the registry from the backup.

Although it may not be the cause of your problems, personally, I would also remove IE8. I found it to be unstable and a memory hog.

  7. What is running slow? Booting? Opening applications? Running applications? Closing applications? If so any application(s) in particular?

Did you add/remove/change any other applications around the same time?

Do you by any chance have Internet Explorer 8?

  8. I was trying to delete the pick on my memory card but it automatically deleted all my picture folder and the rush was to go on my daughters school trip needed my memory card empty!!!!

Were the pictures deleted from your memory card or from your computer?

If you delete an item from a removable device, the Recycle Bin for that item is actually on the device. Are you trying the recovery methods on the card connected?

Did you use the card for more photos? If so, you've probably overwritten some if not all of the previous pictures.

  9. Why do you refer to the F310 as a "flash hard drive disk"? It appears to be a conventional 2.5" hard drive in a USB-connected external housing, not flash memory.

Since you said you tried another computer it's probably not your computer. That leaves two possibilities:

    - If it's the controller that's gone bad, you could try removing the drive and running it through another controller. If it's still on warranty, take it in for servicing ... if you open the housing yourself, you'll void your warranty.

    - If it's the drive itself, you're probably out of luck.

  10. You could make a shortcut to C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleaner.exe and move the shortcut to C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs.

    OR

You could simply reinstall CCleaner with the option selected this time.

  11. Rubbish. Maybe you're not familiar with XP. I see CCleaner as ticked for cleaning out 'Old Preftech data'. Mustn't be working??

I run Windows XP on several machines and have observed the self-cleaning. It seems to require layout.ini to update after 128 pf files have accumulated and a subsequent reboot. Because layout.ini only updates periodically, it may take up to 3 days for this to transpire.

If you Google "Windows XP prefetch 128", you'll find numerous references regarding the self-limiting behaviour from reliable sources.

One good reason to empty the prefetch folder is if a pf file or layout.ini is corrupt. I have encountered one machine where there was an error message to that effect and execessive pf files seemed to have accumulated. After deleting everything including the layout.ini, it seemed to self-maintain.

If you check Vista Help for "prefetch", you'll find an article stating "The prefetch folder is self-maintaining, and there's no need to delete it or empty its contents." AFAIK that means it is also self-limiting but I don't know if the size limits and parameters are the same as XP.

  12. I agree with the above, but the fact is that when cleaning up my PC I go to Start>Run>prefetch>Select All>Delete. It cleans out hundreds of obsolete entries (which CCleaner should have caught), and on restart the necessary ones come back.

    Thanks.

Something is wrong with your OS. The Prefetch folder is self cleaning at 128 entries. When the 128 limit is reached Windows will delete all but the 32 most used prefetch files. This is also why cleaning prefetch, on a properly operating system, is pointless.

  13. I had the same problem with another credit card company but it was IE8 not CCleaner causing the problem.

If you happen to use IE8, check Tools > Internet Options > General > Browsing history. Is 'Delete browsing history on exit' enabled?

If so, go one step further to Tools > Internet Options > General > Browsing history > Delete... The 'Delete...' button with three trailing dots (rather than the 'Settings' button next to it) leads to the Delete Browsing History settings page. If you have Cookies selected, do you have 'Preserve Favorites website data' selected? Not selecting the latter was my problem.

  14. In IE8 > Tools > Internet Options > General > Browsing history is 'Delete browsing history on exit' enabled?

If so, going one step further to Tools > Internet Options > General > Browsing history > Delete..., do you have Cookies or Passwords selected?

EDIT: The "Delete..." button with three trailing dots will not delete anything, it (rather than the "Settings" button next to it) leads to the Delete Browsing History settings page where the real "Delete" button resides. If you have the wrong settings, it's possible that IE8 (not CCleaner) may be deleting your cookies.

  15. If it's OK to delete all cookies, I suggest that you do so using each browser, e.g., in IE8, use Tools > Internet Options > Browsing history > Delete [select Cookies] > Delete.

If you need to keep some cookies, selectively delete manually. Note that for IE8, you must delete cookies in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files, not in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Cookies.

See if CCleaner can handle the cookies afterwards.

  16. The Cookies to Delete panel will list all cookies currently in your cookie folder that have not been designated Cookies to Keep.

When you delete the cookies using CCleaner or your browser, the list will also clear.

As you surf the net, you will acccumulate cookies and the list will grow again.
