  1. I'm in reduced phase of interest in anything Microsoft. :P With two of their products XP and Office 2003 in reduced phase I await their end date.

I'm still not interested in any future MS operating system yet, and even thinking of Windows 7 (which I'm not) would mean a new PC would probably have to be purchased to run it properly. Then again this aging PC of mine may have life left in it yet hooked up to my HDTV as an offline audio/video only device for music and movies with no need to ever worry about needing any security updates, etc.

With all due respect, what OS do you use?

  2. You're probably talking about a CRC or Cyclic Redundancy Check. As simple as I can put it--it's something that you do to a file to check that it hasn't been corrupted.

When you get this error out of a media (e.g. a scratched CD) that means that the CDROM has checked the data it read against a CRC (also stored on the media) and found that the data doesn't match the CRC.

If you're looking at a disk, try cleaning and buffing it to take out scratches. If it's flash or a hard drive, you probably won't have much luck.

CRC fails are annoying because you cna get one when only one bit is wrong. The rest of the data might be there and somewhat usable....you just need a tool to raw read all of it for you....these are somewhat rare (but a program named "DD" will do this for you)

Hypothetically, if I did checked the disk for errors would that solve it?

  3. when i run ccleaner it displays hundreds of megabytes to be cleaned, but after i run the application it only deletes a few megabytes. What is the problem?

The files are probably in use, so try with these steps:

    1)Click start, run

    2)Type Msconfig and press enter

    3)Click Diagnostic Startup, Apply

4)Restart your computer and run CCleaner

To return to normal follow the previous steps except click Normal Startup instead of Diagnostic

  4. If those two are shown I wonder why CCleaner isn't shown? ;)

I am a regular subscriber to pcworld, so i see this type of stuff before. CCleaner's been mentioned many times before, i guess they just don't want to show favor to a specific company?

  5. Yeah. However did you at least browse through that file first? Some of the stuff in there I wouldn't necessarily run on my system due to what it removes hence the reason it's an unsupported/unofficial add-on.

Yeah, i usually go through each section and look for important things.

  6. Thanks!

The first link you gave me worked fine. ;)

Now how do I get rid of the Norton Removal Tool?

Just by throwing it in the recycle bin?

It doesn't require a formal uninstall, so yeah just delete it

  7. I have a 40Gig HDD and I purposely reformatted it to be accessible. Recuva find 54K+ of file to be recovered using deep scan option. However, when it reach about 95% sometimes 97% it automatically close. Need advise on what to do. Thanks!

I'm having similar trouble here. On the lower left corner i get an error

  8. I need help unistlling Norton Antivirus.

When I go to Set up programs acess and default and look for Norton there..It just shows there but it won't give me any option to unistall it, I tried to use CCleaner to unistall it but when I try to unistall it I get this error "This MSI be launched through set up"

Any tips on how to unistall it?

Another question, I have an old version of iTunes and when I open it, a window pops up saying there's a new version of iTunes, If I update it to the new version will I loose all my songs?

Sorry if this is not the right place to post..

    Thanks in advance. ;)

NRT (Norton Removal tool) works really good. After a couple restarts your system will be norton free

  9. I'm trying to burn a DVD9 disc, to backup an xbox360 game but my drive keeps getting an error. I've looked into it and it seems like the firmware needs to be updated. I downloaded firmware for TSSTcorp TS-H653N CD-DVDR optical drive but it said it wasnt compatible. Is there a place I can get these files?

Isn't backing up a game violate DMCA?

  10. Instead of making a new thread I'll ask here, would the same logic apply for two software firewalls even if one of them was the Windows firewall?

Windows firewall doesn't act like other firewalls (Explains why you should use another firewall) so it usually doesn't conflict with other software. Take zonealarm free for example, it works better with windows firewall on. Pretty much it just depends on the software you use

  11. Some people such as me, have run into the problem of there being so many entries that it literally looks nearly a mile long.

Is there a way to add a find as you type, or a search box where you can go straight to something named, or with the name in the title etc so that you can breeze through uninstalls if you know what you are looking for?

In addition, some programs do not play friendly if you "delete" their uninstaller, particularly if they are .msi based installs.

Any way to hide programs you know you want to keep so you can "remove" their entry, or else protect them from being uninstalled, perhaps password protected or something?

In a nutshell, here is what I would love, to make it simple:

    - Find as you type in Add/Remove on CCleaner since my list of programs can be REALLY long

    - A way to either hide or protect certain programs from being uninstalled (password protected, or something?)

This would keep me & other people from accidentally removing programs I know should stay!

Maybe like an index service of all programs... Unfortunately the portable version would have problems reindexing every time the app is launched
