At Opera, we love speed. We work hard to make our browser faster with features that speeds you up, but your connection also plays a big role on how fast you can go.

Some people have fast connections, a lot have slow connections. Many are always on the run from one place to another — making it hard to find regular fast connection points. Even if you do, it might be that too many people are on the Wi-Fi in the cafe or that you are browsing through your mobile phone when commuting on the train.

That’s why we’ve been working on Opera Turbo, a server-side optimization and compression technology that provides significant improvements in browsing speeds over limited-bandwidth connections by compressing network traffic. This does not only make you surf faster, but also lowers the cost of browsing when you are on a pay per usage plan.

Today we start our time limited test phase for Opera Turbo, please read below to learn a little about how Turbo works and where to download it. You can also see it in action in the following video:

Bottom left corner is where the speed is

When turned on, Opera Turbo will display the average compression rate. Hover your mouse over the Opera Turbo icon to see a tooltip with the amount of bandwidth saved as long as it has been enabled.

    History

It was originally developed as Sleipnir version 1.x by Yasuyuki Kashiwagi, who is now the president of Fenrir & Co, but in November 2004, he had his computer with Sleipnir's source code stolen. In 2005, he established Fenrir & Co. for the purpose of restarting development of Sleipnir as version 2.x, which has no compatibility with version 1.x.

As of 2006 Sleipnir had a 6.0% of the market share in Japan. In the next couple of years, Fenrir hopes to dramatically grow its user base from the current roughly 100,000 users to around 17 million. Fenrir has released its Global Site and arranged new pages for each location. Fenrir has released Sleipnir 3 alpha version with plans to release other language versions.

    Features

The browser's layout engine can be changed to either Internet Explorer's Trident or Mozilla's Gecko. Other features include mouse gestures, page zooming, a search bar, Greasemonkey-like user script support, and plugin support.

    Overview

Windows? Firewall with Advanced Security is a stateful, host-based firewall that blocks incoming and outgoing connections based on its configuration. While typical end-user configuration of Windows Firewall still takes place through the Windows Firewall Control Panel tool, advanced configuration now takes place in a Microsoft? Management Control (MMC) snap-in named Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. The inclusion of this snap-in not only provides an interface for configuring Windows Firewall locally but also for configuring Windows Firewall on remote computers and via Group Policy. Firewall functions are now integrated with IPsec (Internet Protocol security) protection settings, reducing the possibility of conflict between the two protection mechanisms. Windows Firewall with Advanced Security supports separate profiles for when computers are domain-joined or connected to a private or public network. It also supports the creation of rules for enforcing server and domain isolation policies. Windows Firewall with Advanced Security supports more granular rules, including Microsoft Active Directory? users and groups, source and destination Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, IP port number, ICMP settings, IPsec settings, specific types of interfaces, services, and more.

At first glance, the Vista firewall may appear to be identical to the Windows Firewall in WinXP SP 2. But once you discover the secret of accessing its advanced configuration settings via the MMC snap-in, you'll be able to set up and customize outbound and inbound rules to fit your precise needs.

  5. About the Xenocode Browser Sandbox

Xenocode WebApp technology allows Internet Explorer 8, 7, 6, Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Chrome to run simultaneously on any version of Windows, directly from the web

The Xenocode Browser Sandbox allows all popular Windows browsers to be run simultaneously, directly from the web. Web designers, system administrators, and other users can now evaluate Internet Explorer 8, 7, and 6, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera, and Google Chrome directly from the web in a risk-free manner. Unlike traditional software applications, Xenocode WebApps do not require any software to be installed and allow multiple application versions to run side-by-side on any version of Windows.

“The Browser Sandbox is a great resource for users and organizations interested in testing Internet Explorer 8 or other browsers, without any of the problems or hassles associated with installing a new browser on their desktop”, said Kenji Obata, Code Systems founder and chief executive officer. “This site demonstrates how Xenocode virtualization technologies can be applied to dramatically reduce the time, costs, and risks associated with the rollout of any Windows desktop application.”

  7. Confusion about Vista Features: What UAC Really Is

As you may know I am just putting the finishing touches on a new book. Roger Grimes and I teamed up to write Windows Vista Security. In the course of doing the research for the book, and just keeping up with the popular press lately, it has become obvious that there is a lot of confusion about User Account Control (UAC) in Vista. The chapter on UAC in the book goes into detail on exactly what UAC is and what it is supposed to do, and I thought I would give a little preview here.

There seems to be a fairly consistent consensus that the purpose of UAC is to block malicious code on your system from horking your system completely. It is not entirely clear where this consensus comes from though. To see whether Microsoft had stated that this was the case I did a brief survey of some of the 1000 or so pages on Microsoft.com that mention "UAC" and one or more of "security feature" and "malware". I was looking for something that claimed that UAC will stop malware that is executing on your system from elevating to an administrator and taking over your system.
