1. Try Opera 10 as it makes FF look as fast as slug crawling over dry concrete.

Do you think that Opera 10 would be faster than Firefox 3 on a dialup internet connection? I run XP sp3 on a 1.6 Mhz Dell laptop with 512 Ram. I tried Opera a year ago on an older computer and it seemed slower than FireFox 2 at the time.

    Thanks for the help.

  2. I am confused about the System Temp File removal. In the Beginner's Guide it states:

    Temporary Files

Many applications use temporary files when working to save information. These are normally deleted upon exit, but occasionally they can be left behind. Normally when the program is not shut down properly. This option will safely delete these files. (By default it only removes files that haven't been used in the last 10 days, this prevents current temp files from being removed. There is an option to turn off this feature on the Options window.)

In the Advanced Options, the choice below can be checked:

Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours (This will only remove files in the temp folder older than 48 hours)

    Do these parameters work together?

So is the default 10 days, and the option reduces it to 48 hours?

    This seems confusing to me?

Please explain this so it is clearer.

    Thanks

  3. I would find it helpful if CCleaner had a delete option to delete the cleaned items to the Recycling Bin.

This could provide an added degree of safety and allow an undo if needed.

Along with this option, could be a right click option for the recycling bin to securely empty the reycling bin with CC.

After a few days, if all is well, then I would permanently delete the cleaned items from the recycling bin.

I would also like to have a right click option to securely delete an individual file throughout the computer.

    Thanks for considering these suggestions.

  4. I would say Eraser is the best one to use, but be sure to use only version 5.7, and turn off system restore before you wipe. Oh and don't defrag before you wipe. Good luck.

I am interested in understanding the use of Eraser and I am interested in your suggestions. Could you explain the reasons for the suggested way to use Eraser.

    Thanks

  5. To set in eraser, open then follow edit/pref/general then just tick the box. YoKenny your right that it recreates its self but if you clear the file it re creates its self without your personal details. Your also right about the time it takes, 30-45 seconds is a tad bit to much...

    Thank--I never noticed this option.

  6. I'll second that, i use eraser to clear my pagefile on shutdown. I have tested this and it adds about 30-45 seconds to shutdown.

How do you use Eraser to clear the pagefile on shutdown. Please walk me through the steps.

    Thanks

  7. To the best of my knowledge, the pagefile is rebuilt each time Windows starts.

Well, this is interesting information. So there is no need to clear the pagefile(or swap file). I am using XP.

  8. Well what about the old reg hack unload dll trick. That forrces programs to allways close all resources after themselves

Open your registry and find the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer].

Create a new sub-key named 'AlwaysUnloadDLL' and set the default value to equal '1' to disable Windows caching the DLL in memory.

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

    Registry Editor Example

Name Type Data

(Default) REG_SZ "1"

    -

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion...

    -

    Registry Settings

    System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\

    AlwaysUnloadDLL]

    Value Name: Default

    Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)

    Value Data: (1 = enable)

that works for all windows in fact I doubts that anyother program would go as further than actually doing just that. only enforcing it straight away.

applying that reg trick on reboot you note that more memore is available after you close programs.

in the long haul I dont see the value of cluttering the registry (which impacts on system performance) by intalling something that at the same time will apparently improve performance or release memory... just ilogical...

    X-3,

Is there any drawback to this change in the registry, ie performance of apps, problems, whatever? Does it improve performance of apps and the computer as a whole?

I am a novice, but willing to try this if it only provides benefit and no negative effect? But I want to know: Why is windows caching the DLL in the memory? What purpose does it serve?

    Thanks,
