  1. In case there are any Sandboxie + Firefox users who frequent this forum, the changes made in FF v3.6.4 to the plugin-container.exe is also causing problems with some sandboxes. More about that here. It's a long thread; most suggestions are to add plugin-container.exe to both, internet access and start/run, in the restrictions area.

  2. I strongly disagree. It's pure desire to control and dominate period. Goons will go as far as you let them. The problem is a spineless society. It's gone so far now that I don't believe there is a peaceful solution. There will need to be extreme acts of rebellion and violence to fix this. There is no way the government douche bags will back off on their own.

No. Speaking in the context of a democracy, governments are empowered by the citizenry. The populace can ultimately decide to limit the government's influence through the power of the vote.

To quote Thomas Jefferson, "When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty."

  3. I believe a big reason why governments have gotten so bloated and intrusive is because we-the-people don?t like taking responsibility for our behavior and actions. We want the government to absorb the consequences of our poor choices so we don?t feel the pain. So to fill that role, governments assume more and more control. As a result, our personal liberties are diminished.

If we believe we are over-governed, then we need to begin assuming more responsibility for our personal actions and stop running to the government to fix each and every one of our mistakes.

The media player that fills all your needs. It can handle DVDs, (S)VCDs, Audio CDs, web streams, TV cards and much more.

You don't need to keep track of a dozen codec packs you need to have installed. VLC has all codecs built-in. It comes with support for nearly all codec there is.

And what is more it can even play back the file or media if it is damaged! Missing or broken pieces are no stop to VLC, it plays all the video and audio information that's still intact.

VLC is a good product. I use the portable version almost on a daily basis. And it has a bunch of features (here and here are a couple of quick examples).

  5. Still new, but I remember when I didn't know how to put a picture in a post.

Hazelnut showed me how, no disparaging comments, just helped.

Andavari was the first moderator to respond to a question I had about secure deletion. Wasn't a moderator then, I think. Again, no slights, just helped.

And DennisD, what can ya say, he just helps, 24/7.

Best examples I can remember. Made me feel welcome. Great forum.

Well said. I fully agree. One of my daily rituals is to visit here and glean advice from the aforementioned and Rorschach. The absence of a condescending tone is what sets this forum apart from many others.

  6. It's interesting the lengths some of you go to to prevent what you think are security threats. On my XP computer I run Windows Firewall and am using a wireless router with a hardware firewall. I use Avira Antivir running real time. I have Superantispyware and Malwarebytes installed for on demand scans but no real time protection running. I use a variety of browsers. Never get infections of any kind. I have Sandboxie installed and set up but just don't bother to use it. Never had a need. The people I see getting malware are the ones that go begging for it. You really have to try to get infected. It's not as common or as easy as it's made out to be. If doing all this tweaking with security apps is because your bored or something why not learn a new OS and put the effort into that. Windows 7 is much more secure than XP. Mac and Linux are even more secure. Learning them has a bigger pay off than spinning your wheels and trying to maintain an obsolete OS like XP.

While it's healthy to consider and debate alternate viewpoints regarding computer security, I hope this ^^^ post doesn't cause this thread to go off-message. The purpose of this thread is to discuss problems associated with last Tuesday's Windows Update and Sandboxie.

Fluffy, responding to your post, I still haven't upgraded Sandboxie on my system to the 3.45.07 version. Nor have I downloaded and installed the WU's from Tuesday. (I'm thinking of holding off until SBIE 3.46 is available.) But, I have been following the various related threads on Sandboxie's forum and I haven't seen any problems related to the duplicate taskbar entries that you reported.

  7. Dennis,

Thanks for the explanation. It gave me a better understanding of Java and how it works.

As best I recall, there aren't many websites I visit with any frequency that require Java. The one linked in my preceding post is one of the exceptions. But, you're right -- I think our local tv stations have their own websites with animated radar that may not require Java. So other options probably exist. It's something for me to check out.

  8. I think I need help understanding the usage of Java.

I have JRE version 6 update 19 installed on my XP system and have always assumed it's needed when I go to websites like here because it needs Java to view the radar loops. (I live in the US midwest and having access to radar looping comes in very handy during tornado season.)

But I'm not sure I understand some of the preceding posts about not having Java installed. Wouldn't that mean one couldn't view the looping demonstrated in that website? Is there some other approach?

    Thanks in advance.

    Chris

  9. This issue with sandboxie and WIN update brings me to the question I`m asking myself very often and I`m sharing this one with you:

Why would a person that always uses sandboxie or other VM + a good AV +a good AS need WIN security updates ?

I suppose I install Windows Updates out of an abundance of caution. Perhaps naively, I assume they won't do any harm and will only add strength (albeit minor?) to my anti-malware strategy. But I prefer to wait a bit before installing WU's, so Automatic Updates is turned off on my system.

  10. Thanks for posting this cc1 as there are a lot of xp sandboxie users here (including myself)

    You're welcome, hazelnut.

Taking a look this morning at Sandboxie's forum, it looks like there has been lots of discussion regarding inconsistent effectiveness of the upgrade to version 3.45.07.

I'm wondering what you and others here that are users of XP sandboxie plan to do regarding yesterday's Windows Update. Install all but KB979683? Avoid installing any for now?

  11. Much thanks to all for your responses. :) I appreciate knowing I don't need to clean up anything from my system regarding the "New hardware found" message.

The tunes I dropped and dragged into the Walkman play fine (as confirmed by Dennis in his post). I even dropped and dragged the most recent Star Trek movie by using Xmedia Recode to convert the vob files to mp4 format. It worked perfectly.

This Walkman is a really neat player. Very simple to use with great sound. I hunted around on Amazon and finally selected it. Tempted to get one for myself.

Dennis, thanks for the well-wishes regarding my co-worker. He's got a tough struggle ahead and I think the Walkman will provide some fun for him.

I visit this forum just about every day and I don't think there's a better group of people that stand at the ready to offer help. You're all a class act.

  12. A co-worker of mine is quite ill and we collected money and purchased a Sony Walkman mp3 player for him. He asked it I?d load it with some songs, which I?ve done. Of course, in that process, I connected the mpg player to my computer via the usb cable.

As is the case whenever a new device is connected to a computer this way, a pop-up message appeared on my pc stating ?New hardware found?.

Everything has been downloaded onto that mp3 player now. (Note that I did not download or install onto my computer any of the Sony Walkman software that came with it. Instead, I simply used drag and drop to copy my mp3?s onto the Walkman, and that process worked fine.)

Since we?re giving the Sony Walkman as a gift to the co-worker, I don?t expect to ever be connecting that unit to my computer again. My question: Given that the pop-up message ?New hardware found? appeared when I first connected the Walkman to my computer, does this mean there?s something now installed on my computer that I should delete? Again, I didn?t install any of the Walkman?s software that came with the mp3 player. All I did was to connect it to my pc via the usb cable.

    Thanks in advance.

  13. Finally emptied Sandboxie and configured SB to automatically deleted box. I guess I need to go through all tutorials on Sanboxie so I can better understand the program.

Any other set up tips you have would be appreciated. Thanks for hangning in there with me as I struggle to get this set up correctly.

I would recommend you first walk through their Getting Started Tutorial (there are 6 parts). This will help explain some basic concepts.

Some new users try to jump in quickly with elaborate sandbox configurations. I'm not so sure that's a good idea initially. My opinion is new users should first get familar with the default settings and basic Sandboxie functions...particularly issues such as running their browser sandboxed, Immediate and Quick Recovery, Program View versus Files and Folder View, and sandbox deletion (which you've now mastered!). These are well-covered in the tutorial and having a good understanding of those functions provides a foundation for more advanced configurations.

Edit: Hope the above didn't sound condescending. It wasn't intended as such. There are lots of ways to configure sandboxes. Can you give a bit more information regarding how you intend to use Sandboxie (example, casual web browsing? online banking? test new software?) and whether you have the free or registered version?

  14. I guess I don't know how to empty the sandbox.
Close down your browser and then right-click on the little sandboxie icon in the taskbar.

Choose default box. Then choose delete contents.

Also, if you will always want your sandbox to empty when you are finished browsing, you can configure Sandboxie to do it automatically. Information regarding how to do that is here.

  15. Hi born2golf (Love the game, by the way. Used to golf a few times a week. Not any more...too busy. I miss it.)

I also use Sandboxie and SuperAntispyware (free version) and am also curious how/why you are having cookies show up if you are always browsing while sandboxed.

When I do a weekly SAS scan, basically out of habit, it never shows anything. I evenly split my sandboxed browsing time between IE7 and Firefox.

Have you changed any of the settings in the sandbox in which you conduct your browsing?

Edit: I should point out I have XP, not Vista. Somewhat doubtful if that makes a difference here.

  16. Fluff here! reporting that when i now empty the sandbox or just shut down everyything has gone !

    I`m still on RMDIR delete,

Aqua-i`m not going to use Sdelete for now i might try eraiser see Dennis`s comments ...

Thankyou cc1 you were correct Sdelete just wasn`t doing it ! it maybe not loaded properly perhaps

Hazelnut thanks for your kind approach in understanding when and what i do`nt understand!

    Thanks again you lot !

One day I might be able to get around to helping someone on the forum,I just seem to always taking the help but not giving it

    Fluff

That's great news, Fluff. I used Sandboxie with its default settings for a while before I began to tweak it. So I agree with your decision to stick with the default delete method (RMDIR) for now.

    Chris

  17. ...I have ticked the box for deletion as you indicate and with sdelete...

Fluffy, are you saying you use SDelete to secure delete your sandbox? If so, it's possible it's not configured properly and fouling up the deletion process. Try changing your sandbox settings by relying solely on the default deletion process (RMDIR). See below image.

Also, something else that's puzzling is that you refer to the location of your sandbox as "c drive, sandbox, user, delete default box". My paths to my sandboxes do not contain the word "delete". ??? I'm not sure if that's related to SDelete or not.

  18. ...What freaked me out a bit was when I did a Superantispware scan, after i had used CCleaner and it found 36 tracking cookies when normally i would expect 2 from my homepage. These were found in C,Sandbox,User, delete default box, The files kept adding and adding everytime i browsed.

cc1Brilliant reply !!! tweaking CC as you have shown should help to clear these out ,or is it best to alter sanboxie to stop them getting there in the first place ?!

    Thank you all

    Fluff

Hi Fluff. I'm a little confused by your post. If your browser is installed on your "real" system, and if you run it sandboxed, and lastly, if you empty* the contents of your sandbox when you are finished browsing, then a subsequent scan by SuperAntispyware should find absolutely nothing related to that sandboxed session.

( * by using/checking the Sandboxie's automatic deletion block - see below image - or some other approach)
