  1. I just got the Windows 7 upgrade package for my laptop, which currently has Vista. The package consists of the Upgrade Assisant DVD (which has the drivers and applications) and the Vista to Windows 7 upgrade dvd. The directions from Dell are to start with the Upgrade Assistant, and then use the upgrade dvd.

Would it be better to use the upgrade dvd and do a clean install rather than an upgrade? Is that possible with the Dell media?

  2. the 4650 should be more then enough. ATI has Drivers for it. Just go HERE and click which ever OS you have. ATI has Drivers for the 4650.

Edit: ok, it seems that with the 4650... something is fishy and no Driver's work with Windows 7 but the specs. of the card itself has the power to driver the Aero Effect. seems odd.

Where did you see that no driver's work with Windows 7 and the 4650?

  3. Hi, I have the same video card and is not compatible with win 7. I am just wondering if there is a driver for this or if there will be a driver that is available. What I have in mind is to wait for the driver and will use the onboard video instead.

Which video card do you have, the 9800 Pro or the 4650?

  4. I just upgraded my daughter's desktop to Windows 7. The current 9800 Pro card is not compatible with WIndows 7. I'm looking for a replacement AGP card that is compatible with Windows 7, can handle Aero, and uses no more power than the 9800 Pro. I also want the card to throw off no more heat and noise than the 9800 Pro. Less power, heat, and noise would be even better. Any suggestions?

  5. What OS have you? Defraggler is an obvious thing to suggest but also Microsoft's free online scanner could be useful. It is very good at cleaning Office crab files. Go for a full scan. Note that there's a special link for Vista/Windows 7.

And please tell us how you liked it. I'm a fan of it but would like to hear what others think.

Windows 7RC, Build 7100. I tried Defraggler - that made no difference at all. I tried to download the WIndows One Care - said my OS wasn't compatible (and yes, I tried the Vista/Windows 7 version).

  6. I am running Windoes 7RC, Build 7100. My monitor is an HP w2007. All of a suddent today, the display on my screen refuses to fill the entire screen unless I put the resolution on the recommended resolution of 1680 X 1050. At that resolution, I have to set the DPI over 160% for the text to be big enough to read. Except in Firefox everything is really, really large - while in Inter Explorer, all the Office applications, and everything else the fonts and type is small. Does this give any insight?

I had not made any hardware or software changes before this happened, and I was able to run the resolutuon at 1280 X 800 and have the entire screen filled. I tried uninstalling the graphics drivers and the Catalyst Control Center - made no difference. Does anyone have any ideas?

  7. Here's the deal. I have Vista, and Magic Network software which came with my router and which I used to create a home network. Everything has been fine for months.

Today I upgraded from KIS 7 to KIS2009. Couldn't access the internet. I eventually completely uninstalled KIS, and went with the windows firewall. Still no internet. I finally dicovered I had two network connections - one public and one private. Once I removed one I was fine.

EXCEPT - everytime I reboot I'm back to two networks and no internet.

Does anyone have any ideas and solutions?

  8. Has that solved your java problem with IE7?

    It has.

Now - when I go into the Security Center, it says both Kaspersky and Windows Firewall are on - even though I uninstalled Kaspersly and cleaned out the registry. Any ideas why this is?

  9. Another Happy Vista user?

Why is that your immediate reaction?

It's looking like related to IE, not Vista. And for the record, I had more issues with XP over the years than I've had with Vista.

For those of you offering actual suggestions, thanks!

  10. When strange things start occurring, the first thing I do is run several security scans.

:) davey 1 thing happens it is to be expected.2 things it is time to get serious.

P.S. Did you uninstall the latest Java and then install it again. Then try it out.

The Beta version may be causing problems itself.

Did you also get JavaRa and clean out all the old Java stuff.

Tried all that - didn't help.

  11. Hi Stephen,

A similar situation occurred about 4 weeks ago.

See this thread and I think you will keep a lot of possible problems from occurring besides solving your current problem.

    Good luck,

    :) davey

Actually, I was using Secunia to check out updates when I discovered the java problem. I've finally gotten it fixed - by uninstalling the regular java and installing the latest beta build (10). The latest regular version doesn't work.

Another weird thing - when I tried this morning to open the link in my email notification to this thread, I was not able to do so. I got an error message saying "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please check with your system administrator". I've never had this happen before. Does anyone know what this is about?

  12. :( I'm running Vista Home Premium. No issues until just now. I got a BSOD, followed by a reboot. Below is the details of the error message. Any ideas what's causing this?

    ----------------------------

    Additional information about the problem:

    BCCode: a

    BCP1: 00000000

    BCP2: 0000001B

    BCP3: 00000000

    BCP4: 82EC9CBA

    OS Version: 6_0_6001

    Service Pack: 1_0

    Product: 768_1

  13. I ran the Vista Reliability and Perfromance Monitor. Everything looked fine except one item. I had one message indicating the "average disk queue length is 1. The disk may be at its maximum transfer capacity due to throughput and disk seeks".

What should I do about this?
