  1. Thought I'd post this in Software under Windows as this part is networking and networking security related

    Sharing Folders over a network

    Got C: shared

1)Now while sharing My Documents results in a blue screen and computer restarting ( too quick to register the stop error ) any ideas anyone who've experienced this ?

    2) isn't My documents and Settings under C: anyway? and hence if C: is shared shouldn't all the sub-folders automatically (given the fact that I did check the requisites to meet the above condition )

    3) Windows XP OEMs seem to work in different ways on various computers  for one no two computers ( out of the box ) have similar registry set up, under networking I realised one of the computers showed up under 'WORKGROUP' and the other identical specs but a different manufacturer and hence I suppose their installation of OEM had that pc in 'MSHOME'

For them to work networked on LAN they both need to appear under the same workgroup ( which is easy done from the computer name under systems in control panel ) but the point being one shouldn't have to !

Any one on the above with any advice ??

  2. To be honest using Notepad in my opinion isn't the best choice, plus it wouldn't work once you pass the filesize limit of Notepad.

I was going to explain how to make the batch files, then I decided it was easier to just make them for you and anyone else that finds them useful. They should work with Windows XP, and Vista. Note that I don't know the hoops Vista will put someone through to use them, however it works flawlessly on my system using Windows XP.

    Download HOSTS Tool:

Great! thats very good of you;well done :)

Would like to learn the basics though or sites that would explain the nitty-gritty of the same; which would definitely help all those interested in doing the same and building more automated (simply done ) environments :) and there'd be heaps more everybody could share - For when you find a moment ( No rush mate ! ;) )

  3. This is what a document I have states from MVPS about a large HOSTS file (and it's true):

Overwrite is only fine if you only use the MVPS HOSTS File.

I use my homemade batch file to combine my own user made HOSTS file which took years to compile with the MVPS HOSTS File. Then I use another batch file to install it, and make a backup copy in the HOSTS installed location.

I store my HOSTS files on another disk and don't directly edit them from the Windows folder - far safer that way and I don't ever have to worry about a HOSTS hijacker. Some ad server years ago would empty it so their ad's wouldn't be blocked (that happened to me once years ago).

you couldn't run me thru this process could you Andavari, could all this be done using what NOtepad?? sounds like the best option, need to be guided thru it or pointed in the right direction and I'll manage from there on ( would really appreciate help with merging the two and installing them in the system32/ETC/Hosts ... many thanks

  4. You may be interested in this posts third paragraph here for the reason why, other than the site not being in the HOSTS file to block the ads.

Thanks Andavari, couldn't agree more with you when you say hostman downloads and stores the updated hosts files, but I suppose it only adds to the existent hosts.mvps list which in turn would work in tandem with IE7 Pro Adblocker thereby making the adblocker even more effective and It would take configuring both for best results .... well atleast thats what my take on it is. ...given the fact that I've only upgraded and begun using these 2 days back - whilst trying to configure my Netgear and Lan alongside .... indeed did get to a plateful for me and a bit confusing :)

    always appreciate your comments

    Regds

  5. all confused now with Hosts.MVPS , Hostman, and IE7 Pro which ones are to be used or are all used in tandem for ad-blocking ( do I merge entries ? )

Does one require hostman to be running while surfing the net ? or can I just get updates and exit ?

Is there a way I can get hostman to start when Ie7 and hence IE7 pro starts?

IE7 pros' adblocker features show css style, frame, image etc how do I manage those for different sites ?

  6. thanks YO Kenny, the prudent question being do you use the IE7 Pro Adblocker or the HOsts.mvps or both ?

Whats the optimally efficient way of using it and also does one need to set up the proxy in IE7 set to Hosts.mvps (if I've got that right coz I vaguely remember seeing a Proxy field in Properties / Preferences...

Do advise if using any would slow down the system....

I've noticed Hosts.mvps blocked a few ads and banners on some urls and not others - must be based on how those ads/banners are posted on a website ? something like a link or directly embeded ??? wouldn't really have a clue if someone could explain pls...

  7. MVPS.org HOSTS File is a good choice because it will work for any and all browsers.

Great ad on this! just installed it and its good to seem the ads/ banners not load but it seems to prevent certain other functions too e.g as I'm typing this reply the Extra Formatting button has been blocked too!

Does it slow down the download (overall)? by running services in the background or is it absolutely inobstrusive in its working, also I noticed it replaced (renamed rather) the HOsts file - was that a IE7 (Microsoft ) file ? Also the restricted sites list ( is that microsoft generated or Spybot ?? ) - sorry just thought I'd include all relevant questions in here - easier sorted out in one go and easily understood ( to me atleast :)

Is there a way to selectively control its features ? I use IE7

    many thanks

PS : I understand the only way to uninstall or remove Hosts.mvps is to rename the file to Hosts in the system32/drivers/ETC - would that be right?

  8. Pardon my ignorance here, but is IE7 Pro a Microsoft product and is it a freeware/upgrade allowed under the windows xp home oem (pre-installed xp ) ? or does one need to purchase a licence for it ?

  9. Over the teething phase now :) ......... successfully set up Netgear with the use of Static IP and manually entering the Mac addresses of comps that are authorised to connect thru it ! works like a beaute!! ;)

    Disappointed in the way Windows XP HOme manages the network though - 1) there seems to be little standardisation when it comes to OEM ( pre-installed XP Home ) I use an ASUS and the other laptap is a NEC and the latter seems to share the networked resource and display it under MSHOme which resides under MS Windows Network which in turn is under Entire Network ...........phew! and the other laptop shows up under 'Workgroup' as it should;

    2) changed this setting in control panel/system/computer name and it worked though............... its funny how at first it showed both the comps on the network but asked for a pasword ( punching in the respective log in passwords to no avail :( ......... ;

    3) then shared the requisite folders on each of the machine and MY ASUS showed up on the NEC but not the other way around ..................

    4) Worst of all!! I've got indexing service OFF; dunno if that contributed to what followed; but when I tried to share folders and make them available it brought up a blue screen and re-started the pc !! horrific

no winning with MS eh? or I must be doing something terribly wrong ! anyways ran checkdsk and nothing reported and both pcs work great! still trying to share folders though ............... :(

  10. thanks Kenny but I've been to all the above sites before posting my request..

What I need is a simplified straight forward method of configuring my wireless router which has a wireless modem card inserted in it to not just act as an Access Point ( which it does really well! ) but to get my laptops in the house to talk to each other ( home network)

    Now....

the netgear router MBR814x doesn't have a usb port for WPA key to be uploaded from a USB flash drive and windows wireless network wizard doesn't have the requisite options as a work around...

Netgear professional help site is a paid for service

Require someone who has been there done it to help solve this problem I believe its a Windows xp home issue as opposed to the router per say..... coz once both the computers are linked to a router technically speaking they should both be able to talk to each other , though (practically )not in this case

    many thanks in advance

Cheers for the support and your time too Kenyy ( I do appreciate it )

  11. while on this subject could some1 pls englighten me as to animated avtaars on the forum, what format are they and how do they need to be uploaded? tried but it didn't animate... :(

  12. Guys... I need help here again :(

How do I get my ISP provided wireless modem card router ( Netgear ) to create an intranet ( wireless home network ) apart from serving as a Access Point ? tried the netgear interface and there isn't much help available on this

    cheers

  13. Just noticed that my Outlook wouldn't open when mailto links off websites are clicked on, it says Outlook not properly installed - I tried the repair function of MS Suite from Add Remove programs and then uninstalled and re- installed MS Suite but to no avail; just wondering as to what might be wrong ?

    Any suggestions, help anyone ??

    ta

    Cheers

  14. did anybody have any problems getting updates today .... it for the first time seems to be taking a while to connect and displays a strange message saying " Attempt to establish connection no 1" and then "..... No 2

and times out ... could it be the new router I've just installed and some firewall setting ?? dunno ....

Got my spybot updates without any hassle, super antivirus worked great and rogue remover updater worked fine too......

  15. have a little drop net contraption with two poles jutting out above the window, its sides netted or an old bed sheet securely fasted and a drop net in the front rolled up on a rod or something and then invite the pidgeon in on the window sil ....... don't forget to video the event though .......show the SPCA how its done ! ;)

  16. Hi,

I've been using a standalone wireless ISP broadband service, and open to looking at ADSL / Cable .... and need to network it wireless to other PCs whats the best solution for me pls given the following requirements.

    1) Winxp Home 512Mb ram, and wireless 802.11g/b

    2) what kind of a router should I be looking at to connect upto 4 PCs (wireless ) and share 1 Printer ( ok if that needs to be connected to the router.....though would prefer it being wireless with a usb stick or something )

    3) Preferred range to extend to two 2 level homes

Option of ADSL / Cable as opposed to wireless ISP modem

Would one recommend going in for ADSL or Cable how are these typically setup in terms of what I've only heard terms such as filters etc ( really blank as regards these topics)

My greatest concern being would there be a wireless router which could accept ADSL / Cable or a wireless modem should I change the service providers.... i.e having invested in an ADSL router shouldn't limit my future options to ADSL only ...

Further, could I possibly set up a maximum data throughput cap for specific connections going out from the router, as also leave the internet connection not dependant on my pc to act as a server - thereby allowing authorised access to the broadband without having to leave my laptop running :)

any help or being pointed in a very requirement specific knowledge base would be greatly appreciated
