  1. I don't see the need for an email scanner. Don't open e mails from people you don't know. Especially if it has an attachment. In case you have a blond with big boobs moment and do something stupid like open an attachment from some one you don't know the resident shield will protect you just like it does if you open any infected file. The email scanner is redundant IMO and I disabled it in AVG.

Not blondes also do lol. Don't know why though.

    Always thinking they:

    1)Won Something - Wohoooooooo

    2)Uhhhh interesting e-mail

    3)etc...a millon more reasons

    Why I wonder...

  2. Ok, yes, Avira doesn't have an E-mail Scanner. But, answer me this, what good does an "E-mail Scanner" have if the dectection don't work as good a it's supposed to? Anecdote from another forum:

I get about 30-40 spam emails daily, here at home. Windows Mail (on Vista) is the client and it has a nice spam filter. A couple of days ago, I was sifting through the spam box, before deleting, and saw a nice "Paris Hilton" message - with attachment. OOoo. AntiVir is installed but doesn't have an email scanner, so everything comes in. Panic ? Nah. I don't have much time to analyse nasties but I thought this one might be interesting (hey it's spring time, gimme a break..). So I saved the attachement to the Desktop. AntiVir quiet. Moved the file to VM (XP with Avast! 4.8). Unzipped and ran saver.exe (looking forward to that "clip" of Miss Hilton they promised me). File ran while Avast! watched in silence (it's worse than me !). Nice backdoor infection and VM started spamming almost immediately. Can't find the darn "clip"

So next I go back to the Host (Vista) and decide to run the file through Virus Total. As soon as I unzip the thing, AntiVir gets mad and blocks it (Trojan.Gen or something similar). HEY !... my "clip" ! Oh well... "Ignore" and then VT : only two or three AVs could see it. Nice and fresh.

So if anybody tells you that AntiVir (free) stinks because it doesn't have an email scanner, well... best to have good detections when an infected attachment is run than have 7 shields that sleep on the job

    Still looking for my "clip".

It's not just the: "They say...", it's the facts that talk now. Anyway, you decide with which AV you feel more comfortable. Those are my 2 last cents. hehe :)

  3. Because of AVG's trend, I am thinking of changing to either Avast or AntiVir. Which offers better protection? Or, what else would you recommend?

How difficult is it to uninstall AVG?

    HP Pavilion - Pentium? 4CPU

    160GB HDD 512 MB RAM

    Windows XP SP2 Home

I would recommend AntiVir. It has superior detection rates.

  4. Pay my way to the Caribbean and I'll help you be a prolific poster

lol. I'm too far behind to catch up. I would have to post like 20 posts a day to catch up like 2-3 months later since CTskifreak would be posting too.

  5. What are the different in the settings in the secure deletion.

    1) Smiple Overwrite (1Pass)

    2) DOD 5220.22M (3 passes)

    3) NSA (7 passes)

    4) Guttmann (35 passes)

I do not know which one to choose or what they mean.

    Thanks

Simple Overwrite: Overwrites with data on the file with Random Bytes I suppose.

U.S. DoD 5220.22-M (3-pass standard): A three-pass wipe. The 1st pass writes all 0's to the drive, the 2nd pass writes all 1's to the drive and the 3rd pass writes a random pattern.

    example: 0000 0000, followed by 1111 1111, then 1001 0111.

U.S. DoD 5220-22.M (7-pass standard): A seven-pass wipe using random characters, complements of characters, and random data streams.

    Guttman: here

    ###########################

From 1 to 4, number 1 being the fastest deletion cause it overwrites the file once and 4 the slowest since it has to overwrite the file 35 times.

Forgot about this one. Thanks to davey for the link on the "emptying the recycle bin" topic. There's an updated Beginners Guide here. On the 4th node, where it says: "CCleaner Information", there's a detailed description to the other questions you asked. :D

  7. At last! 100 posts! Wuhuuuuuuuuuuu.

*Sockdown starts music* Congratulations to me, congratulations to me, WEEEEEEEE lol!

Sorry, it's my first ever 100 posts in any forum, so, it's something new to me. Feels good! :D

  8. I feel the exact same. Although Speedtest.net states I have 1976 kbps for downloading in reality it's only 159 kbps. Maybe what they're showing is something different, I don't know for sure. At least it's better than dial-up!

lol! Yeah! I remember those days.

  9. I don't mind people promoting their commercial software in their freeware, such as how DeepBurner Free and AVG Free do with a simple picture to upgrade because that isn't popping open s**t all on its own. Instead with AntiVir you have to interact with the ad by manually closing the window - I guess I'm just spoiled by open source and freeware that isn't trying to sell me something every damn day.

Just being during updates is a yes, but what if it won't update at all because it can't find an update server and just keeps jumping from one server to another, then what? I've personally never seen a software title open source, free, or paid that had such a difficult time contacting it's own servers. If it won't update it's needlessly consuming disk space and needs to be replaced with a competent rival.

Anyways it really doesn't matter to me at this point because I'm using Avast again.

No disrespect intended Andavari. I was just saying it in a kind of funny way. I have used AVG, Avast! and AntiVir too. Yes, the updates are kind of slow sometimes, but, well, they use the better servers for the premium version which make a lot of sense. In the software business, if you have a company, to survive, you need to generate money. So’, in order for them to do that, they have to limit the free version in some ways to make you buy the full version. Anyway, my bad, I wasn’t trying to make an argument or something. By the way Andavari, since you’re using Avast! now, did they change the ugly radio kind of like interface? And second, has the scan speed increased? When I used to have Avast!, the scan was out of this world slow. Just curious cause it’s been a while since that time.

  10. You can do a Google search about those items/locations. For example, CCleaner will clear the Recent Documents list that is on the the Start -> My Recent Documents (Win XP). It will clear that list. On Win XP, that folder is located -> C:\Documents and Settings\User\Recent.

didn't really help much, never mind, i will search on othere forums for the answers

Thank you! all for your help anyway..

I can't really write an answer for each question you asked. I gave you a tip about what CCleaner does which the My Recent Documents. If you do a search about Index.dat, you might find something like this: Index.dat. I did a search and the first link was that one. Another link about Index.dat which was the second one, here. The sames applies to the other questions. I'm sorry, but, it's something you can find easily doing a search with google. Another one, Start Menu. As for CCleaner, it will clean all those areas by: Clearing the Recent Documents list, Deleting Index.dat files on reboot, etc...A little about CCleaner features can be found here. Also, you can do individual searches on this forum for previous posts about specific items. Hope this helps.

  11. I updated through the program itself to the new version. I had the notifier blocked for version 7 and it must still be blocked as I haven't seen it.

I also updated through the program which was a very nice thing. As for the pop up, since I did a full scan a few hours ago, having more files than last week(Installed a few applications), even with that, the scan was like 8-10% faster than last version, so I don't mind it at all. It makes me want the umbrella lol! hahaha. Kidding. But, being free, to promote the premium version would be the logical thing since, to build an application, takes a lot of time and money. And well, it's just during the updates. Also, I think that you can block avnotify.exe with your firewall or do a manual update and download the files on the website to avoid the notify. Never done either of them, but I might try the firewall one next time to see if it works. I use Online Armor. Just, ignore the thing, close it as soon as it comes on or, think it's the first time you seen it and say: "Wow, there's a premium version too!". lol. Kidding. :D

  12. I have McAfee Security Suite on my Vista Laptop because it came with it. I'm not sure about how good McAfee is now days. It used to be one of the best. As soon as the license expires, gonna download AntiVir Free for it since that's the one I have on my XP machine and I have never had a problem of viruses/worms/etc yet. Of course, I scan every week with AVG Anti-Spyware, Super Anti-Spyware, Malwarebytes Anti-Spyware, Spybot and Ad-Aware. Plus, I use SpywareBlaster for prevention. I also do Online Scan's once in a while just to make sure. :D. Anyway, back to topic, McAfee has only found 1 threat in almost a year from a Flash Drive. I don't know if this is a good thing cause McAfee is so good, or just because it doesn't detect them. Resources wise, I compare McAfee now days to Norton. If one day I decide to buy one, it would be NOD32.

  13. Hi Andavari,

i do appreciate your help in replying to my post and even though the help guide explaines the basics, i am still unsure if to hit run cleaner on certain sections. For example:

    Last download location...what is it??

Delete index.dat files... what are they??

    Recent documents... what are they??

Windows log files... what are they??

Run in start menu... what is it??

In selecting these options, what would be the result??? Sorry! i'm pretty new to the computers.

    Thanks

    Musicmad

You can do a Google search about those items/locations. For example, CCleaner will clear the Recent Documents list that is on the the Start -> My Recent Documents (Win XP). It will clear that list. On Win XP, that folder is located -> C:\Documents and Settings\User\Recent.

  14. Hi

just installed CCleaner, read the help guide but still unsure what to do, when it gives me the option (recent documents & temporary files), i'm thinking its going to wipe out all my data, because in these folders i have important stuff. i just want to give my PC a good blitzin! right through, i know there are options but still unsure, can anyone help???

    Thanks

    Musicmad

    Hey musicmad

CCleaner will delete all the items from each section that is checked. (All the items that can be deleted of course). In the default installation, CCleaner will delete files in Windows Temp Folders that are more than 48 hours old. If you have files in certain sections that you don't want CCleaner to delete, just uncheck that section or go to Options -> Exclude and add the folders and files so CCleaner knows what not to delete.

  15. I can't blame you not wanting to remove it from your Exclude list.

Maybe just .log has a lot to do with it.I have experienced software that uses such files just to get up and running and they are not used again.Keep an eye on that file and see if it grows.

    :) davey

Well, now I'm having my doubts that CCleaner is responsible cause I ran CCleaner, something got messed up. Oracle error: ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error. Then, since I thought it got messed up, I excluded the file and ran CCleaner again removing the file OracleDatabaseXEServerInstall.log with 1 simple overwrite. It wasn't working, so I stopped the Database and started the Database again so the Listener was now working and it connected. I'm gonna keep searching for information about this. Until then, thanks. :D
