  1. Actually I've been using it ever since 1998 or 1999, or maybe it was 2000! In any event I've been using it for many years. ;)

Oh I see, It's the jpg and gif you're not big on. OK, I thought you were referring to 'IrfanView' that you disliked, at least that's how it appeared. OK Well, in any case, Why is jpg and gif the most popular of the formats? I've never made a PNG, but if the quality is better, I'm curious as to why it's not used more often. Is it because of the file size being larger than gif and jpg? That would certainly be understandable considering websites that use a lot of images would want to avoid using PGN for loading purposes for it's visitors. Also, how a picture looks to others will vary depending on the quality of their monitor and visual settings anyway. But besides all of that, for website developers the loading time is a important consideration. Perhaps jpg and gif are the winners in that situation.

  2. IrfanView has never made complaint JPG's, and even using it's best quality to save them they still end up looking like crap. Now Paint.net makes some nice quality JPG's - I haven't tested if they're compliant yet though.

I take it you're not a 'Fan' of IrfanView. Well, it may not be "compliant" but it's good enough for me. I mean seriously, how good does it have to be? or maybe I should say, how good is good?

Thanks for saying my pic looks like "crap".

    Have a nice day, Tyler

  3. Runaway, the image you posted at the bottom of post number 7, (here is an image of webTV), I cannot see it.

    What was it?

hmmmm that's strange. It's a picture of webtv. Are you sure you're not using WebTV ? :D

Actually, WebTV can even see that picture, because I viewed it myself with my friends webtv. That's really strange you can't see it. Oh well.

  4. However, some websites just didn't look right and I was glad to eventually get a proper internet connection - even though it was just a dial up AOL account, until I eventually got broadband!

Yes, I read somewhere that Webtv has broadband available now for it's subscribers. That should definitely speed things up a bit. The dialup is just too slow, and quite frankly, is outdated.

  5. Possibly because many free image viewing and editing programs don't make 100% compliant and compatible JPG/JPEG images, hence even some DVD players can't read the images created by some programs.

I know Microsoft Paint (believe it or not) which everyone has that uses Windows will make 100% complaint and compatible JPG/JPEG images - but at the serious cost of quality since you can't set the quality in it, and it does degrade the overall quality of an image when saving it.

Yes, that makes sense. However, the image was originally a jpg, and I only resized it using Microsoft Paint. Seems that it shouldn't have that much of a degrade effect to make it unreadable for webtv, but, it's certainly a possibility. Anyway, I'm using another program now 'IrfanView' which has a quality setting. CeeCee told be about this freeware image editing program that's really nice.

  6. I'm a new user to these forums, although I have been using CCleaner for some time (excellent prog that it is!)

For some months now though, this has been bugging me:

Whenever I run CCleaner, about 50% of the time I get a list of (13 at present) uninstaller reference issues.

Even if I tell CCleaner to fix the selected issues, a day or two later, they're back again...

My knowledge of PCs/Windows is not that great, but I would be extremely grateful if anyone could tell me why this is/or what I'm doing wrong, just so I can resolve this for once and for all. Not any criticism of CCleaner implied, mind.

Incidentally, I have also found this with other programs I use (Ashampoo Winoptimiser Platinum 3, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner).

Can anyone give me any pointers in the right direction please?

    Thanks.

You might want to take a look at this Windows Installer CleanUp utility. I used it at Microsoft's suggestion to fix an 'installing update' issue once. One of Microsoft's Net Frameworks security updates wouldn't install on my PC correctly, and I used this utility to remove the existing installation so I could try again and install it via their download links. It could be that you have 13 installer issues to be removed. Use at your own discretion though, as I'm not sure about the results. You should probably ask Microsoft or someone else here about it before you use it.

  7. I noticed that this forum has RSS news feeds available. I'm curious as to how many of you subscribe. I found this RSS feeder (NewsBliss) and was curious of your opinion of it, as well. Do News-feeders increase your vulnerability to viruses? Seems like it might. I had NewsBliss a few months ago and found it to be very functional and actually, quite nice piece of software. Obviously a lot of thought was put into it's appearance on your desktop, as it is a beautiful design.

  8. Bizarre as this sounds - get them to check their Java settings ......

At work, we have had occasions when the settings of 'higher' spec graphics cards make the Java settings confuse graphic issues with lower (i.e. small jpegs / apps) images.

Try disabling the Direct3d and / or OpenGL (mainly D3d usually)

I honestly have no idea what or how WebTV works but if it use Java then this may be why.

If it is only your avatar that is missing then I'm afraid your friends may have selective blindness and may not like u

(btw daft as it sounds - it is a suggestion, so try not to slate me pls !!!)

Hello burtman, Webtv is just a Internet browser, and not a computer. It's much like a cable box of the internet. The users of webtv have no way of making any operating adjustments of any kind. It's actually very limited in what it can do. Some websites are litterally impossible to access with webtv because of the script codes the site is using, or other more advanced scripts that Webtv can't read. Also, if a webpage is too large i.e. (to many pictures..ect,) webtv won't access that page. It will often times time-out trying to load it. It's mostly used by beginners or 'newbies' to the world we call the Internet. I had one years ago for a short period of time, and I must tell you, I couldn't WAIT to get a computer. :)

It's also my understanding that webtv doesn't have java either. So, maybe that could be why the jpg is not showing up for them. Who knows??.lol

    Here's a pic of WebTV

  9. A few things! The "3" refers to most recently used. I also have six permanent, so if I set that value to zero I'd have nine. I suppose with a smaller font/icon size I could have more. The down side of disabling all taskbar baloons is there maybe some you actually use. I kind of like window updating baloons which give the option of following the downloads or installations or just continuing to work. Also, will this across the board disabling, disable warnings from your programs in the notification area?

Also, if you want to make something permanent, right click it in the recent section>pin to start menu!

Oh OK, I see what you mean now. Well, I set it to 1 now so that will work better for me. I had it all backwards thinking the higher the number the more 'permanent' shortcuts you could add.

About disabling the balloon notifications, I'm not sure about which balloons it actually disables. I'll keep mine disabled for now, and if I decide later that I want them enabled again I'll change it back with the new powertoy I downloaded. It's easy enough.

You can fit 17 small icon short-cuts on the start menu.

  10. I'm looking of a simple Photo Editor that Crops, and if possible, also accepts screenshots. If not a simple crop editor will do just fine. I want to crop jpeg jpg, gifs. screenshots..ect

I'm using windows XP and I don't have .Net Frameworks.

    Thanks for any suggestions, Tyler

  11. Strange, i think it should be excatly opposite. Spin slow first and when computer heats up more, then spin faster. That's normal behaviour on some case fans. I got fan that always spin at same speed.

What I did to help keep my PC cooler is, I set a little portable fan behind my computer aimed right at the air intake port of the PC. It stays nice and cool all the time. B)

  12. Glad that you solve it, but it basicly made my help useless.

I wouldn't say "useless" at all CeeCee. You showed me a little about the 'registry' and 'HKEYS' which was a learning experience to me in and of itself! I appreciate that :)

Please continue with your help and advice. Lord knows I need it!

  13. For that particular baloon: Right click start (or a blank area after you open your menu)>Properties>Costomize>Advance Tab>In the Program area, limit it to 3 or less!

The problem for me doing it that way is because I keep most of my programs that I use everyday in that start menu list. It's easy access for me just to click start and click the program I want to run. If I narrowed it down to just 3, I would have to find another shortcut. Thanks for the suggestion. :)

  14. I'd like to thank everybody who responded with advice about how to correct this problem. I really appreciate it. :D

In the interest of doing this the safest way, and without having to get into the registry that I'm not famiular with, I decided to take DennisD's suggestion and download the Powertoy Tweak UI and disable the balloon-tips that way. It was very easy to do, and now I have a new power tool! :-)

I'm sure it will come in handy on other applications as well.

I do hope however, to learn more about the registry in days to come :)

Again, thanks to everyone with their great and informative suggestions.

    Tyler

  15. Try this tweak:

You can disable those annoying balloon tips that keep popping up in Windows XP with the following Windows XP registry hack:

    Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER

    Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

    Name: EnableBalloonTips

    Type: REG_DWORD

    Value: 0 disables tips

    source

I made it all the way to "Advanced" but couldn't find:

    Name: EnableBalloonTips

This is my first time with HKEYS, so I'm not really sure what I'm doing. hehe :)

  16. Almost everytime I click on 'Start' I get a notification that pops up from the 'All programs' link, that says something like "All Programs can't not be shown." Then you have to click the bubble/Popup to make it disappear.

Is there anyway to stop this continuous and annoying notification?

    I'm using windows XP.

    Thanks

  17. If your on an lcd monitor you can make it look even better by turning on clear type. Go to your desktop and right click>properties>appearance>effects>in the second drop down box choose clear type.

Thanks rridgely, that worked nicely too. I think it gives it a cleaner look. I'm using the small icons as well, which take up less room.

  18. Those icon text "boxes" are blue because you got blue desktop under wallpaper. You can change boxes to transparent by right clicking My computer, selecting Properties, then go to Advanced tab. Click "Settings" on Performance area and check "Use Drop Shadows for Icon Labels". Hit OK and OK.

Thank you very much, I tried what you said and it worked just fine. :) I don't know how it ever got changed before, but, transparent is what I wanted. Thanks again.

  19. For some reason my desktop icons now have a shaded blue background behind where the name appears. Does anybody know how I can fix this?

Here's a screenshot of my desktop, the icons are on the left-hand side of the screen.

  20. is there another similar program...one that's worthwhile...or, am i better off without anything?

a long time ago i used ca's pest patrol...but, i thought it was bothersome

Here's a free program that's pretty similar to what defender does. It notifies you of any system changes, and is also a real-time spyware blocker..ect

    Spyware Terminator

  21. Yes your horses show up :)

I take it WebTV is this?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSN_TV

Sounds like when we hooked a Dreamcast up to the net, emailing with an on screen keyboard and game controller was fun.

Yes, that's the Webtv I was referring to. I guess we should call it MSNTV since MSN owns it now.

    Thanks for the reply :)
