  1. Hold down Ctrl key while clicking cookies.

BTW, are you dragging the cookies or using the -> button?

I forgot to mension you can hold the Ctrl key if you have multiple cookies you want to save. It still shouldn't increase the speed doing it this way though. ;)

  2. Welcome to Piriform perola.

In the two windows, "cookies to delete" and "cookies to clean" it takes forever to move them individually from left to right. In fact I gave up after doing a few dozen I want to keep. Trouble is in the left pane, after choosing a cookie far down on the list to move to the right, the left pane then jumps back to the beginning and I have to start over searching through the mess. This is very time consuming and confusing. Is there a way to tag each cookie you want to keep as you go down the list, and then move those as a batch to the right window?

I think we need a little more info, CC version, operating system with service pack number, web browsers you are using.

Well on every version of CC that I've used its instant. ;)

  3. Welcome to Piriform Bluesky.

    1. Prior to this lasted update, when I manually cleaned, I would get list of details automatically,

now I just get Summary. 2.

Yes the newest version has changed its layout. If you do an Analyze and right-click on the results window you can select View details results for a full report and a button appears on the bar saying View summary results. I've made this point apparent in Post #10

This is something I don't like so I'm still using 2.21.940 until its corrected. ;)

  4. In XPSP2, the registry key (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0 where GUID represents the Identity Number) has a new value ("Compact Check Count") that is incremented with each closing of OE. When OE is closed and this value reaches 100, then the user is prompted to compact all the folders. Only if the user agrees to compact such does the "Compact Check Count" get reset to zero.

    That's what I meant. ;)

Sorry I'm with you now. My number doesn't go that high because I compact my own. ;)

  5. Ok I decided to install Internet Explorer 7.0 to see how it goes. As I said I downloaded IE7 a couple of years ago. I installed it, it did WGA check and installed the files. Did a restart, I checked IE and it was still IE6.0. Ok I downloaded IE7.0 of M$, installed it, it didn't do a WGA check, installed all files, did a restart and IE7.0 is now installed. I actuallly like IE7.0 how it puts the site icon if it has one in your favourites. ;)

  6. Thanks! I use Outlook Express, and the tech who tried to recover them said that they definitely had been deleted by CCleaner. I will look into Recuva to see what it can do for me.

Well I use Outlook Express 6.0 and all your emails are stored as stated in *.dbx files. Now you haven't actually stated your operating system with service pack number but I'm assuming your using WinXP. Now these email files are very strange in WinXP. I've recently had a new computer and I always zip up my email files and save them on a Flash drive. Now on Win9x/ME these files are normally saved in Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Indentities\{A70F213D-4FBD-4F57-A465-463A86A52DA1}\Outlook Express folder. Now on WinXP here is the strange bit they are stored in Documents and Settings\yourname\Application Data\Indentities\{A70F213D-4FBD-4F57-A465-463A86A52DA1}\Microsoft\Outlook Express folder. Now your A70F213D-4FBD-4F57-A465-463A86A52DA1 folder will have diferent numbers and letters but you should still have an Outlook Express folder at the end.

When I first setup my WinXP I opened Outlook Express and went to File/Import/Messages then selected Outlook Express 6.0 from the list. Then selected Import mail from an OE6 store directory. Then you click on the Browse button to file the folder that unzipped all the old messages into. Each sub folder you have in your Inbox is stored in a seperate dbx file. e.g. Sub folder - Friends - Friends.dbx.

Now I added all my old dbx files which added to the OE6 Inbox. I looked in {A70F213D-4FBD-4F57-A465-463A86A52DA1}\Microsoft\Outlook Express folder and they are no where to be seen. I did a drive search for *.dbx and the only ones it showed where the folder where I unzipped my originals into. I opened OE6 again and deleted all the sub folders and imported them in again. When back to the Outlook Express folder and they were there this time. I checked the folder this morning and they were there. I've just checked it again and they are missing again.

Now another strange thing about WinXP is the Address Book thats stored in Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\username.wab with a username.wa~ as the backup. Now the other day I added some emails address to the Address Book and I thought I would back these up by zipping the folder and they weren't there. I used File/Export/Address Book, selected Microsoft Exchange Personal Address Book and it says Address Book export process has completed. It doesn't say where its exported it too. I've always said WinXP is a pain in the a**e.

Now the only reason that CC would delete your email files is if you used Options/Include and told it were these files are kept.

Since SP2 files are periodically compacted by Outlook Express, if the process is interrupted then all data can be corrupted and lost.

I'm afraid Outlook Express doesn't compact your email files/folders periodically or automatically you have to do this yourself. File/Folder/Compact All Folders. ;)

Edit: The bl**dy dbx files have come back now.

  7. Welcome to Piriform gslc.

One week ago today CCleaner cleared out 4000 emails from my inbox- everything from 2005 to that morning. Is there any way I can recover them? How can I prevent this from happening again?

As Augeas says CC doesn't do anything with emails unless you tell it too. You haven't said what you use for your emails. Try Recuva to see if it can find any deleted files. ;)

  8. They can usually be opened by winzip, winrar etc.

Try holding down shift key, right-clicking and choose open with winzip. Might work.

Most zip programs should be able to open it. I know WinRAR and ZipGenius will.

Well my WinRAR 6.1 opens .jar files but my WinZip 7.0 doesn't.

Where have you had this file from tikanian? ;)

  9. Welcome to Piriform Peter.

But I have a suggestion for one of the next CCleaner version:

When we go in Windows to Start and than Run, we can enter a command, for example Cmd to go to the command prompt or Regedit to go to the regeditor.

After using CCleaner, this command is still filled-in in the box if we go to the Start > Run menu.

So, is it possible to delete (erase) this pre-filled-in command as well?

Please state your operating system with service pack number.

Yes this question has been talked about before. If you have Run: (in Start Menu) ticked on Win9x/ME is clears the run box straight away. On WinXP you have to do a restart before it clears which is a pain. ;)

When you click Analyze or Run Cleaner, you'll see a new Results panel. We've redesigned the Results panel so that you can see an overview of files by application and details on each file to be deleted. You can also sort the list, search for specific items, and export the list to a text file. We think you'll like it! :)

    CCleaner v2.20.920

    • Redesign of Cleaner results panel.

While some users might find this a good point I personally always like the detailed results. If you right-click on the results page you can select View details results. This puts a button that says View summary results. I think there should be a button saying both of these options depending which one is clicked. Which ever you click on it shows that results view and changes the button caption to the other option.

It would also be good if this results view could be added to the Options panel then the next time it starts it remembers the view. Sorry but until this option is made available (next version is would presume) then I'm sticking with 2.21.940. As a fellow programmer this option would be easy to add. ;)

  11. IE6 is being phased out by a lot of major websites.(just go to youtube)

Well I've been to YouTube and it still works with IE6.0 SP3, a bit slow on dialup (broadband is coming in 9 days).

From a security stand point, I?d recommend upgrading to IE8 as it is a much safer version and has many new safety features. It also has many other new and improved features such as web slices, accelerators etc.

Here are two articles reviewing IE8 security:

Well my brother-in-law was told he needed to update to IE8.0 a few weeks ago which he did. After that Windows would startup so he removed it. I had the update today of Automatic updates but I unticked it.

I downloaded IE7.0 a couple years ago. I may give it a go after I hear of more good and bad points. Keep them coming guys. ;)

  12. I think I might try disabling the Audio in the CMOS/BIOS to see if they still show up in Temp.

Ok update. When I disabled the Onboard Audio Function in the CMOS/BIOS and did a restart all these files are now missing from the Temp folder. I restarted and enabled the Onboard Audio Function and they all come back.

Thanks for all your suggestions but I think we can mark this topic as [Resolved]. ;)

  13. Well thats the sort of info it writes to the error log.txt on Recuva. Have you tried running CC with the /debug switch?

Have you tried an uninstall and re-install? Where is you download CC from?

No one else has replied to this topic and I'm no Vista expert so sorry we will have to wait a while. ;)

  14. I wouldn't have thought that Realtek Audio would have needed them because it should know my system is English. When I installed the drivers I think it asked the language. I shall have to install them again to see what shows. They are editable with NotePad but it doesn't tell you much. If they are needed then you shouldn't be able to delete them which you can no problem.

I think I might try disabling the Audio in the CMOS/BIOS to see if they still show up in Temp. When I was finding all the bit for the computer I said I want a very good seperate sound card. They said that the onboard sound card is excellent you don't need a seperate sound card, bull.

Actually I took the computer back to OverClockers last Thursday because the didn't fit the floppy drive. Its like buying a brand new car and ordering special alloy wheels and it turns up with steel. Don't they read job cards? I bought another DVD DVD?RW because I couldn't find a proper fast CD CD?RW writer. When I took the cover off to fit the drive I could find the power cable but I couldn't find the data cable. I asked them to fit it while they were fitting the floppy. I also had in Device Manager two exclamation marks on Ethernet Adaptor and SM Bus connector/adaptor. I didn't know it had an Ethernet Adaptor so I asked them to sort this exclamation which they did, they installed the drivers.

When the guy on reception came back he said they were installing the Realtek drivers. Well I installed those and it worked. They said they were installing new drivers downloaded. Now I haven't done a search for these on Realtek but I suppose they could be handy. ;)

  15. Welcome to Piriform wwje001.

Ever since upgrading to v2.21.940 I get the following error message when selecting "Tools". The "startup" menu is fine, but the "uninstall" option gives the error message, and the list of programs to uninstall is blank.

    The message is:

An unexpected error has occurred in CCleaner

Well I've never had a problem using all aspects of CC over the past few years.

I'm not sure if you can run CC in /debug mode as you can with Recuva. I've just tried Run: "C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleaner.exe" /debug and it runs but it doesn't produce an error log.txt file in the CC folder. Any errors produces by CC or Recuva are put in this file and you can post or copy and paste the file contents here.

Now CC actually uses the Windows Add/remove options. Does your Control Panel - Add/Remove show the items correctly? CC gets the same info from the registry. ;)

P.S. Its nice to see you've added your spec.

  16. I do have those files Keith. I found them in System32:

I'm guessing you have some program accessing them for whatever reason, and creating those temp file copies.

I have the Lang folder but there is nothing in there Dennis perhaps because they have been moved to Local Settings\Temp.

In a thread here the writer states he deletes them as The Lang (Language) folder and its language files are created by his Realtek AC97 audio driver installation. Do you have that?

Thanks for searching Hazel, your a star.

Yes I do have a Realtek audio card built into the motherboard which I hate. I don't have any Realtek short-cuts to check or change settings. I have a \Program Files\Realtek folder but no exe appears to work. Only the Realtek Ethernet uninstaller.

    I don't have a 1033 (English) folder but I have 1025, 1028, 1031, 1037, 1041, 1042, 1054 with nothing in there. Only 1033 has dwintl.dll for error reporting. ;)

  17. Ok guys/gals.

I've recently rebuilt by new computer. By default WinXP 2002 SP2 uses IE6.0. What are the advantages and disadvantages of installing IE7.0 and IE8.0?

Now I've read a lot of errors with IE8.0 on here. Is it worth it?

Now I use IE7.0 at work and I don't like the layout. Who in there right mind puts the address bar at the top? What I do like is it changes the icons in the favorites if one is available from the link. Thats the only avantage that I can see. I also install the Yahoo toolbar as I can make link buttons to my most used forums, here being one.

I also have search engine in my favorites e.g. AltaVista UK, Ask Jeeves UK, Dogpile, Excite UK, Froogle, Google UK, HotBot, KillerInfo, Lycos UK, Mamma, Yahoo! and the one of here Yauba.

I've just install WinXP SP3 today so its now IE6.0 SP3.

What are your views on Google Chrome, Google Toolbar and Google Web Accelerator?

Now I know what you going to say install FireFox or Opera. I tried these on my older computer and I didn't like them.

I need to fores and against for each browser please. ;)

Edit: Please edit the title from Whis to Which :(

  18. I wonder if this would help Keith.

I have the file mentioned in my startup, but no bin files in my temp folder. There's a mention further down the topic about language settings.

If you're not posting logs we could move this out of Spyware Hell, so you can get more input from the members. They can't post in here.

Dennis if they aren't in your /Username/Local Settings/Temp folder then where are yours?

(Keith we will have to move this thread at the end of today if no logs are posted)

Thanks Dennis and Hazel for your input. I found both those links when I Googled.

I'm sorry for posting in the wrong forum. I was going to post in Hardware then I remembered Spyware I know its not directly related. Please move this topic to a forum of your choice. The Lounge would be alright I assume. ;)

  19. Thanks Rorschach112.

That definitely does not sound malware related

Read the Before you Post sticky if you want me to make sure

I would say its malware because I only got on the web last night and these files have been there a few days.

I've read the Before you Post sticky but that doesn't point me in the right direction. I would like to see how many other users have these files in the Temp folder. You haven't said if you do or not and I don't suppose users check what files are there then just do a clean. ;)

  20. Hi guys/gals.

Now I've had a new computer system for the past 5 days. Now I use Uninstall Manager which checks what new files have been added to a drive since the last check. I've mensioned this on other posts on here but no one is interested.

    I do a clean with CC and everytime I start up again the exact same files are in the Username/Local Settings/Temp folder. Thats straight after startup not after something has been running. These are Arabic.bin, Czech.bin, Danish.bin, Dutch.bin, English.bin, Finnish.bin, French.bin, German.bin, Greek.bin, Hebrew.bin, Hungarian.bin, Italian.bin, Japanese.bin, Korean.bin, Lithuanian.bin, Norwegian.bin, Polish.bin, Portuguese(Brazil).bin, Portuguese.bin, Russian.bin, SimChin.bin, Slovenian.bin, Spanish.bin, Swedish.bin, Thai.bin, TradChin.bin, Turkish.bin.

Now these 27 files are obviously something to do with languages but why? I've only installed my usual software and I never had these on Win9x/ME. Is it another cockup WinXP does?

Now I've don't a web search for these files not much comes back only Trojan, Malware, hyjackers. I don't a virus check but nothing shows up.

Does anyone else have these same files in their /Local Settings/Temp folder? ;)
