Humpty Posted January 24, 2007 Share Posted January 24, 2007 WE HAD A chance to see the Sandisk Solid state drive in action and we learned that the new marchitecture is barely faster than the existing motor-powered hard disk drive. A nice chap had two notebooks and booted two machines, one with a mechanical hard drive and the second with solid state drive. The test showed only a five second difference. It seems the marchitecture might not be that exciting and big hard disk chaps such as Seagate or Maxtor won't even bother with it, at least not for the time being. It is a question of cost, as you have to pay hundreds of dollars for 32GB flash drive at a time when a 80GB notebook drive costs way below $100. Moderators DennisD Posted January 31, 2007 Moderators Share Posted January 31, 2007 What is it that seems to be ingrained into the psyche of manufacturers that says if it`s new they have to charge you a kings ransom for it. Of course manufacturing & development costs have to be recouped, but come on, they only get away with this thanks to the people who a: have money to burn, and b: must have the latest of anything, whatever the cost. And this is not a criticism of people who fall into those categories. I would love to be able to afford the latest gear. Well, patience is a virtue of course, but in the case of new technology, it could save you a fortune. All the above is, of course, IMHO.
