Hello All!

 

Right now I got Win2k Adv Srv running as my file server. Three drives are all in NTFS format. I'd like to get some kind of file server version of Linux. I know that there are version of Linux that can read NTFS but not write to it. Knowing that, is there a way that I can convert it to Ext3 or ReiserFS so Linux can read and write to them. Am I stuck getting a 500 mb hdd and xferring everything over to it?

 

1. Is there a Linux distro for file servers or I'll have to settle for Samba?

 

2. With Samba I'm not to familiar with file permission as I am with Windows.

 

3. I'll need several partions for backup and file storage.

I don't believe you can change file systems and keep data intact.

probably. you could just re-size the partitions continuously and put the data from 1 partition to the other(NTFS to ReiserFS or w/e you're gonna use).

That's the sad thing is that I'll have to get the bigger drive to hold everything. I don't have any more room on the drives that I have in the server. With the bigger drive I could mount reiserfs and move everything from the ntfs drives over to it. It won't be a problem since I'm not writing to the ntfs volumns only moving the data.
