repairman6491
After installing CCleaner version 5.38.6375, when I click the icon shortcut on the taskbar, it will not open. I have to right click and choose to run as Administrator
Moderators mta Posted December 18, 2017 Moderators Share Posted December 18, 2017 was this an over-the-top install, or a fresh one? OS version? repairman6491
Hi mta It was a fresh install. Os version is windows 8.1 Ps. I have another computer with windows 8.1, and CCleaner opens when I click the taskbar icon.
Moderators mta Posted December 18, 2017 Moderators Share Posted December 18, 2017 let's clutch this straw... uninstall your current version. then go into the Program Files folder for CC and delete its contents (keep the .ini file if you have customised settings) if you no longer have your download, get the latest build from here; https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds reboot the PC then install CC from your downloaded file. if no luck, try the install with the PC in Safe Mode. when you say you open it from the taskbar, do you mean the system tray (as in you have Monitoring turned on) or the taskbar (you manually created a shortcut there)? repairman6491
Hi mta I tried the full removal, and re-install, but it didn't work. So I tried the safe mode install, and that worked. Thank you

repairman6491
Well, I spoke too soon, as it only worked right the first use, then right back to having to select run as administrator. Need a better solution. Ps. I have two computers with windows 8.1, and only one has this problem
Moderators mta Posted December 21, 2017 Moderators Share Posted December 21, 2017 let's try and find the differences between those two PCs. what are their AV softwares? they both have the same versions of CC and Win8.1? the login account for both is an Administrator level? when you did get CC working, what changed to put it back to not working - a reboot? were you still in Safe Mode when it did work? I'm still confused about this "icon shortcut on the taskbar"??? perhaps a screenshot will help. repairman6491
What is AV software? Yes they both have the same versions of CC and Win 8.1 It worked when in safe mode, plus once when out of safe mode. When I tried it a second time when out of safe mode, it only opened as administrator.
repairman6491
I don't have Desktop Icons. I use toolbars (Desktop, and Quick Launch)
Guest Stephen CCleaner
Are you installing to a custom directory that has permissions restrictions, or do you perhaps restrict access to the Program Files directories to Administrators only? repairman6491
No, I let it do the regular install.

Moderators mta Posted December 21, 2017 Moderators Share Posted December 21, 2017 try removing and recreating that taskbar link. looks like you are using Defender as your AV, check the App & Browser control section. in particular, the Exploit protection section, and CFG (control flow guard) under System settings, and under Program settings, see if CC is listed.
