guttman
Hello everybody, I have a question about CCleaner's wipe free space function. It's possible to, someway, recover deleted data after I performed a CClenaer simple (1 pass) free space wipe using any kind of home/professional software? I'm talking about some pictures and videos I copied on Windows drive and then (after less than 10 min) CUT into an external usb drive. It's important to me because I'm not the only one using that computer and that files are kinda personal. Thank you

Moderators mta Posted March 6, 2017 Moderators Share Posted March 6, 2017 you could give Recuva a try, another Piriform product. do you actually want to recover deleted files or just see if it's possible after a wipe free space process? guttman
Thanks for reply. I just want to see if it's possible to recover data. I tried Recuva deep scan, no results. Just wondering if there is any "super-secret-professional" software that could recover my data or I should assume they're just gone. Thanks
Moderators mta Posted March 6, 2017 Moderators Share Posted March 6, 2017 there is always super-secret-professional software, it's what the big boys use. it takes time, effort and motivation but anything is retrievable with the right application of persistence and patience. and your 'kinda personal' pictures and videos won't come back in one complete usable chunk, but will enough data be gleamed to make it incriminating?, absolutely! guttman
So what about this: http://www.nber.org/sys-admin/overwritten-data-guttman.html ? I thought overwritten data were lost forever, since hdd don't have memory
Moderators mta Posted March 6, 2017 Moderators Share Posted March 6, 2017 it's a whole black magic area. many variables come into play, from how the data was lost, medium used, technology, generation of hardware, post disaster usage, right up to the human aspect - carrot and stick or risks and rewards. nothing beats a furnace, bucket of salt water or the good old hammer(a big one!). my theory is, if software was used to wipe data, then software can be used to retrieve data. so take software out of the equation. guttman
Ok, we are now speaking of procedures that would eventually cost more than the data value itself. I think for a normal person with non-military data a simply overwrite is enough
Moderators mta Posted March 6, 2017 Moderators Share Posted March 6, 2017 agreed, but the tin foil hat brigade are a funny bunch. it all depends on what the "kinda personal" is doesn't it? Moderators Andavari Posted March 6, 2017 Moderators Share Posted March 6, 2017 I performed a CClenaer simple (1 pass) free space wipe If you didn't also enable/tick the box "Wipe MFT Free Space" it may be possible - although very highly unlikely. I think the possibility only exists if the whole file resided inside the MFT itself, otherwise your file is most likely gone forever unfortunately. None of us volunteers on here are data experts though, you're just getting our thoughts on the matter.
